    Gotta admit as a Holden man I've always thought of the AU as the ugliest thing ever built on Australian soil but nowadays they're growing on me.. they had arguably the lowest drag coefficient of any large Aussie sedan ever built (WK & WL stato/caprices a distant 2nd i think) and more simplified running gear in both 6 & 8cyl.. not that the boss 5.4s or coyote 5.0s or the barras are shit, its just these are simpler cars from simpler times

    this was a fantastic video, thank you for giving some love to these cars, they really are better than most people thought they were. Especially with that awesome IRS and LSD in the back. I've owned two AU's, both August 98 built date and the one I still have is a series 1 Galaxy blue XR6 VCT sedan with 176K on it and some nice upgrade mods. it still brings a smile to my face after owning it for eighteen years. She has the bodykit (front, rear and side skirts and that bi plane) and I will always prefer the series 1 XR kit and overall appearance of it over any other AU even the T series due to that forte like front end they had but they are beasts on the road. It's only the front grilles of the series 2 and 3 cars and the dashboard changes that's better about them IMHO but each to their own. From memory the XR8 was around 7 ish seconds to 100 km/h and the XR6 was 8-8.6 or so. Anyone with an AU XR or T series, hang onto it, I sold my XA Coupe too soon and I'm not making that mistake with this one

    Loving the AU content Ross! These 2 seem tastefully modified and used as intended! I've got a series 1 XR6 VCT 5sp, same colour and body kit as the XR8 here. I think Tickford banked on the 6 being the bigger seller overall and spent way more money developing it for the AU to start with. Personally I prefer the lower maintenance of the 6 and using the revs to make the most of it, however the 8 has a much nicer exhaust and scope for power NA.

    Back in 1998- End of AU Falcon series alot of Ford fans were old men who didn't put exhaust system, cold air induction and use Turbo 400 Gear boxes in AU XR8 and it's natural enemy VT SS commodore and VT Club sports wit 5.7 Chev engine ( LS1 ) was much superior to Windsor 5.0. VT SS were done up back in late 90's to early 2000's. In 2003 when Ford released XR6 Turbo that's when Ford picked up their Game. Would love to see these old AU XR8 fitted with 6 speed ZF auto transmission and Genuine Ford Falcon Diff 3.73 LSD IRS M86 with full exhaust and cold air induction.

    I recently bought a Tickford AUXR6 (Identical to the blue xr8 in your video).
    The original VCT motor was shagged so i replaced it with another VCT engine with only around 125,000km and i gotta tellya', it is a an absolute weapon for what it is.
    She's auto, but great fun to drive.
    The interesting thing is Ford put more features in the series1 XR6's than the following series 2 & 3 as standard, such as limited slip diff standard, independant rear suspension standard, adaptive shist trans .
    I know people either love them or hate them, but in XR form, i think they look absolutely awesome.
    If the xr front end treatment was standard across the range, they would have been a match for the commodore.

The front end design immediately stood out compared to the Holden Commordores, and coupled with some of the liveries such as DJR's Shell Helix livery... yeah, the AU is my favourite Supercar. It's such a shame it wasn't particularly successful in the years it raced. Or even in sales of the road-going versions of the car when it was in production. Hindsight in recent years seems to have looked favourably on this car.

    Im all about a six everyday of the week, but the AU220s are really woken up. If you think with the mindset of year 2k again and block out everything after it makes for a whole different perspective. Even the HSV SS Commodores everyone loved were only making 195kw. It wasn't till the b-series and vz where +200kw factory was an option. 220s really made Holden pucker and play the catch up game going with larger displacement just to keep up.

    • @trixnhoez2964
      @trixnhoez2964 2 роки тому +2

      Not quite, 195kw was what the base model of the holden 5L made in 1998, you could get a harrop stroked 220kw version of it from hsv since the vr/vs models though. Then by 1999 all base model v8s got the early Ls1 with 220kw right through to the calloway tuned Ls1 in vt gts that made 300kw. Most hsvs in year 2000 would have been at least 255kw though.

      Mmm maybe at first, but by the time the S3 arrived both the VX SS manual, and the S3 AU XR8 manual were essentially level pegging for the 1/4 mile. Mostly due to 3 things.
      : The more user friendly and nicer shifting 5 speed box, combined with much more logical gearing opposed to the vague 6 speed in the SS.
      : Lighter car with a rear suspension system that actually put the power down, rather than making loud drive train thuds and bangs as it tramped it arse off like the SS.
      : Torque... yeah you read correctly I said torque, despite the SS's extra 800cc of capacity both engines are very close in peak torque figures. However it's where in the rpm that peak torque is made, and as luck would have yessss the S3 AU wins this one too easy smashing the highway overtaking test well ahead of the SS and usually with one less down change to do so.
      P.s. an even better argument can be made for the T3's with their much improved all round package. Like factory stroker, big brake upgrades, beefier box etc etc. I have an original Motor Magazine from the day that the Red T3 went head to head with the Clubsport R8, the latter of which got it's teeth kicked in. Happy cruising man 👍

    • @justin3131ify
      @justin3131ify 2 роки тому

      @@RossReviewsau There actually is alot of small difference between them..., but in regards to the ratio's according to Ford each vehicle's ratio's were specifically matched to each engines characteristic.
      Its very obvious that this is not common knowledge or widely known information for many enthusiasts, let alone the majority of people out there. Hence why so many people believe that the only difference between the i6 t5, and v8 t5 is just the the minimal bit's that you need to have changed over when using a box from the 6 to the 8 and vice versa. While they do both work with each other once you change over all the input shafts, bearings, bell housings bolts & shit. While the v8 t5 definitely is not top of it's class in regards to it's strength & durability by any means compared with what we have today. Even so inside the 8 cylinder t5 it has had a somewhat revised finished gear set and slightly different ratio's for it's first 3 cogs. Take it easy Mr Reviews 👍
