I was suffering from dropouts and stuttering while playing on my brand new CXNv2. After a few e-mails with them. They recommended to change the network connection from WiFi to Ethernet. Even though the WiFi signal was pretty much maxed out. Haven't heard a stutter or dropout since. Neither with Roon nor StreamMagic.

I have one of these MXN10's. Software has been absolutely solid, not one hiccup in over 2 months. Seems Cambridge has improved their software from the last time I used it with the CXN2 a couple years ago. I have yet to listen to the internal dac on the MXN10 but I think I'll hook up the analog outs today after watching this. Digital transport only and I can tell no difference between it and the WiiM mini. The 4 buttons on the front of the Cambridge is pretty cool, you can assign your favorite playlists to it or internet radio stations. It's like a shortcut button. I will say if you can deal with or get the Zen Stream to function properly for you it does have a blacker background over all these other "budget" type streamers, it is the only one that stands out as a transport only. I'll assume it's due to their isolation and noise reducing products they put into their streamers, but as noted the Zen has been super buggy for a lot of people. What good does that do ya? I feel the MXN10 has really reliable software.

Just compare the blue sound node with the MXN 10. bluesound node beats at hands down for set up, ease of use and sound. Blue sound no also comes with base and treble mxn10 does not. returning the MX-10.
These reviews have the positively review quit equipment otherwise they're out of a job

@@Dan-iy8ig I didn't feel there was much difference between the Node & Cambridge..but I was using a $1k external DAC. Cambridge dac/sound seemed pretty good though. Tad warm. Not sure how one or the other is hands down better than the other with set-up & software..they both seemed pretty much plug and play, neither software seemed like an issue. Not sure how you are hooking yours up though, maybe wifi is different. I tried a couple other streamers since I posted that comment and I've found the Primare Prisma to have great sound quality...it has no DAC though. Anyway, I didn't think there was anything wrong with that Cambridge, seemed average. Probably why it got decent reviews. I commented cause I was curious what the issues were that you thought it so terrible. Granted it has less functions than a Node, but sound quality and software function you feel the Node is that much better huh? Thanks & Happy New Year

I bought the iFi Zen Stream several months ago on sale (holiday pricing) from BH photo and it has worked flawlessly for me in my TP Link Deco mesh WiFi setup. I use it with Roon connected to my Denafrips Ares II and sounds wonderful. I built a Roon Rock / Mock with a used HP Elitedesk Mini 800 G5 intel i5 9500 which had worked without any issues. I must admit I was concerned about the connectivity issues people were reporting but I think a lot of the early release bugs have been worked out. I would say the iFI Zen Stream is a good alternative to the Cambridge audio streamer.

The ground loop works like a charm. I had my Windows PC connected to vintage Spectral pre/power combo and the buzz over USB was unbearable. My dealer loaned me a CA DacMagic 200M to try. As soon as I turned on the ground loop, all became dead quiet. It’s worth the money just for that if you know how irritating the ground noise buzz is.

I own 2 dedicated streamers, next to my Octavio AMP and Marantz M-CR612 network streaming amps.
The first one is the tiny WiiM Mini. I tend to call it the hockey puck. The second one is my personal pride and joy. A Cambridge Audio CXNv2.
Both work through Roon. The WiiM through AirPlay, the Cambridge is fully Roon Ready.
I like both the WiiM's Home app and the Cambridge's StreamMagic app. Both are easy to use. And each offers support for Qobuz, Tidal and Deezer. To which I'm subbed. I also love the preset option the CXNv2 offers. I can store up to 99 favorites. Being Internet Radio stations, albums, tracks etc. Not sure if the MXN10 offers the same option.
Sound quality wise. The Cambridge sounds awesomely when hooked up to my Octavio AMP and Dali Spektor 2 speakers. Both analog and digital. The WiiM Mini sounds good when connected digitally, but analog it's not so great.
When it comes to value for money. You can't beat the WiiM.
About the whole MQA story. I do own 2 DAC's which can decode MQA. An iFi Zen DAC V2 and a Loxjie D30. They both sound good in their own rights. The iFi is connected to my 2014 Mac Mini which is setup as my Roon Core running on Linux Mint. The Loxjie is connected to my daily laptop.
Out of all these devices, the Cambridge gets by far the most playtime. I don't care that it doesn't support MQA. I have other devices which can handle that. And truth be told. I don't think I'll be missing it if it were to go away.

I'm serious about my audio too, that's why i just purchased the HIBY R6III DAP WiFi streamer, with two mono ESS SABRE 9038 dacs per channel, that has a slightly lower noise floor at ( -120db ) including a slightly lower distortion figure of 0.0004, than that particular Cambridge audio streamer and dac combination you have just reviewed 🤔 . I'm using the line out of the HIBY R6III DAP into my pre and power mono amplifiers . The HIBY R6III DAP also has the choice of CLASS A or CLASS AB mode, and with my particular audio system with my two way monitors, i prefer the HIBY R6III DAP on the CLASS AB mode. It even sounds absolutely wonderfully fine and kicks the sound quality ass even with my spotify premium subscription 🤔 .

Tried their AXR100 stereo receiver and the musicality (I can’t think of a better word) was stunning and brought out emotion in all my music especially masters of lower quality (I thought Lullabies to Paralyze by QOTS sounded incredible through it). The Yamaha A-S801 that I auditioned it against was noticeably brighter but extremely unemotional despite being very good. It’s hard to explain how I felt but it sounded perfect to me. That said there was a very low level ticking noise from the CA that chalked up to home wiring quality but ended up returning it anyway and got one of CAs integrateds and I am very happy although thought the Wolfson DAC in the other model sounded fuller. I want to get the DAC magic 100 and see if it can recreate the experience I had with the AXR100. Truly one of the best amps I personally enjoyed.

I often use my iPad connected via USB cable to Schiit Modi+ DAC, which kinda makes this a Hi-Res Lossless streamer with beautiful display.
But you know, I have to get up in order to change tracks. So oftentimes I just stream Airplay from my iPhone to WiiM Pro which is also connected to the same Modi+ DAC. The screen is my iPhone.

Really depends on your use-case scenario with the Zen Stream. If you’re using it with Roon as an endpoint, have a good external DAC, and use an ethernet connection, it really can’t be beat for any streamer under $1500.
With this config, it’s been rock solid with zero issues for going on a month now and it sounds just as clean and impressive as the Hifi Rose RS150B I compared it to and noticeably better than the Bluesound Node (2021) when running both USB out. Even beat the Node on reliability. All this for $300 (Zen Stream) on the used market.

I have the Wiim Mini that was purchased to add streaming for an older top-of-the-line Yamaha HTR. The Yamaha has a handful of extra optical ports, so the Wiim can leverage the DAC inside the Yamaha. The internal DAC inside the Wiim seems to work well when hooked directly to a higher-quality portable speaker like the KEF Muo, as it sounds better than BT APTX from the phone. I completely agree with your assessment regarding the iFi vs the Cambridge. I've done a fair amount of research into the iFi and wouldn't buy it unless I were heavy into Tidal Connect or Roon. All told the iFi seems like kind of a missed opportunity.

Can't believe Zen hasn't fixed it and come out with a better "mk. 2" version. If a WiiM Mini can solidly connect to the Internet for $80, iFi has no excuse for putting out such inferior gear at $400. My WiiM Mini does Tidal Connect just fine (I don't use MQA, I'm at their "Hi-Fi" tier).

@@doifeellucky ah, it varies. Some reviewers have said it practically makes no difference - If you have a solid wi-fi connection (and that is the key) - I'd keep using it. Some routers can be configured to give priority to audio/video streams if you want to get that granular about it. Now, there's no harm in using a good Ethernet cable though and it might make make a small difference if your network gets bogged down (say when relatives come to visit for Thanksgiving) or your kid is playing a data intensive video game online. Good luck.
Many of the people who seem to have the most issues are those using "mesh" networks" or "wi-fi extenders" on their wi-fi. I don't use any of those. My wi-fi router is plenty strong throughout my small house.

WiiM Mini or Pro - it's a no brainer.
Measured and confirmed Bit perfect digital output (up to 24 bit 192KHz) solid WiFi or Ethernet LAN (Pro only) connection and the Linkplay phone app is pretty good and claims not to spy on you.
Neither model has USB data transfer, which is a shame but the units are inexpensive (in HiFi terms) and you'd honestly have to be more than a touch simple to not follow the guided setup.
If you can live with wireless only (WiFi/Bluetooth) and an optical S/PDIF output then the cheaper Mini is honestly much better value.
The Pro adds some connectivity options but doesn't really function any better as a streaming transport unless you need coaxial output or your WiFi is a bit rubbish.
You can even slave several units on your home network to one "master" unit for multi room playback.
They do have an internal DAC (same chipset and implementation on both) so you can have your main setup and add another Mini or Pro for a cheap kitchen or garden setup.
They also support internet radio and DNLA for playing files on a NAS.
And I repeat: bit perfect digital output up to 24/192, measured and confirmed by the Audio Science Review community.

Doubt I would purchase DSD again if things remain as is in digital audio. Nothing wrong with it, it's still a great listen. It's a cost/value issue for me.

Streamers and DACs are expensive gadgets. I have an AppleTV for Radio Paradise and a Firestick for Amazon Music HD. I did purchase a Bluesound Node 2i, though it sounds fine, it is essentially a brick. And 24/192? Can’t hear the difference from CD quality.

As I’m getting back into audio…dacs are probably the biggest fleecing. Streamers are a close second. It’s a chip and inputs/outputs. I get manufactures try to process their sound but come on… $500 and up? Yes, we like our new gadgets, I just think dacs are over done for what they do. Ted talk over…

Uh, you can't build a Raspberry Pi based DAC now with a good Allo digi-hat and power supply for less than about $400 these days. And then you end up with something looking like an 8th grade science fair project instead of a finished product. Just saying, these devices cost what they do and in general are worth it depending on what quality of sound you are after and how good your stereo system is.
Compare a low cost DAC like a Schiit Modi against a Gustard R26 and you will hear significantly better sound from the Gustard. Is the Gustard worth $1600 compared to the $150 Modi? Many people think so.

The chipsets are pennies, it's the R&D (and err marketing...) for the implementation that costs.
Add to that software and licensing.
WiiM devices are cheap because the app is built on already existing software and they probably didn't hire electronics engineers with an audio background.
It works though and it shows just what can be achieved without milking the customers wallet.
Traditional audio companies are going to have a very hard time with the new breed, especially as Chinese brands can offer "state of the art" (Amirm - Audio Science Review) DACs for under 200.

I have Spotify on my TV. My TV is connected to a DAC and then into my integrated. Would dropping $500 on a streamer really make that much of a difference?

    • @zefiro2k
      @zefiro2k Рік тому

If you are satisfied with spotify, then I wouldn't recommend the upgrade. Spotify maximum quality is 320 kbps MP3, even if you are a paying customer.

    • @rosswarren436
      @rosswarren436 Рік тому +1

I'd consider it from a use case. You wouldn't have to leave your TV on all the time, needlessly wasting power and putting hours on it. A streamer/DAC won't use nearly as much electricity as a TV. But if you are using lossy Spotify (which can still sound fine), I'd go for a WiiM Mini or WiiM Pro - both are much cheaper than this device. The WiiM Pro adds Google Chromecast functionality (like this Cambridge) if you need it.

Ahh, but digital outputs are not all the same...
OK, well engineered digital outputs ARE all the same as long as the product doesn't do anything to the data in between receiving it and passing it on to whatever connection the device is using to output.
The Bit perfect output of the WiiM devices is the number one reason they have become so popular.
Well, aside from being fairly cheap, having a decent app and getting the products plastered all over UA-cam(!)
I really wouldn't get worked up about 320 Mp3 either as so many recordings won't sound any better at 16 or 24 bit anyway.
Now when you go lower than 320 there tends to be quite a noticeable difference...
As long as the data is received without alteration, then it's really down to the quality of the DAC and if the user is satisfied with the UI and stability of connection of whichever device they are using as a streaming transport.

Ditto having a WIIM Pro feed a Cambridge DacMagic 200M . . . Excellent streaming combo for my main system. I especially like the Amazon Music interface that Wiim offers . . . it helps you to bypass the problem with the Echo Dot & Echo view devices not being able to provide a COAX or Optical input into your DAC for better decoding. You could go the Bluetooth route but eh . . ya know? 😕
