- Today, I'm testing press plates with different Inks and papers. I just got the Spellbinders Betterpress Letterpress System and the First thing I wanted to try (after using the ink and paper that came in the Kit) was all of the different types of inks I regularly use and love as well as some of my most used Cardstocks and I decided to film the unboxing and test session!

Thanks so much for testing inks and papers! Recently learned hot foiling works for BP plates. Very cost effective and versatile purchase!

I finally got my BetterPress, and here’s what I’ve learned. While the Spellbinders watercolor paper gives the best impression, it’s not necessary. I got very good results with my 120 pound Opaque Accent card-stock. I’ll save the cotton paper for when I’ll be watercoloring, which is next to never! 😂 I like to use my Prisma pencils with gamsol, so I have more options as far as ink and paper. I also discovered that for me, dye ink works better than the messy permanent stuff that Spellbinders is pushing. I actually got clearer results, even while using my very old BigShot! I ran it through twice and it was perfect. It’s infinitely easier to clean up and doesn’t stain my BetterPress. I think this system is worth the investment, though the debossing you get is rather subtle. The clarity of the image is really the star here! It reminds me of the old platen presses, which is basically what this system is. Quite ingenious of Spellbinders to reinvent it! 😊
That is all good to know! I have Accent opaque but always use it for card bases and I don’t think I’ve actually tried it in the Betterpress😅😂 Interesting that you never got good results with the Betterpress s ink. I’ve gotten great results but only have the black one ( I do have a couple pkgs of coloured Betterpress ink on order for certain projects mainly because I don’t currently have any other mini ink cubes) but definitely prefer the easy clean up of other inks when those inks are appropriate. Personally, I don’t mind staining as much if it means the product is getting some use and love. I used to play around with prisms & gamsol many many years ago and really keep meaning to get back into it. The results are awesome! 💕

Hi, very good video. A question about the sanswhich you use with your bigshot. It prints well, but no depress effect at all, not even with the Spellbinders betterpress cardstock. Would you have a solution, please ?
It really depends on how tight your machine is. In order to tighten the sandwich, you could add an additional piece of cardstock behind the piece you are using your press plates on. I’ve even seen someone add a piece of fun foam behind the cardstock they were using the press plate on although I haven’t tried it myself.
Were you able to get an inpressed image on the other cardstocks used or just the stamped details? I tried Hammermill and got a beautiful image but ni impression.
I did but haven’t tried with hammermill yet. Because my big shot is so well used there wasn’t much pressure when running them through, but I was more testing the inks and papers for this video to see what would actually create a nice crisp image. After this video, I added a couple cardstock shims below the mat on the base. It wasn’t very thick cardstock…either 65lb or 80lb but it was enough to tighten the sandwich and press into the cardstock. I’ve only tried once. Hammermill is fairly thin itself anyway though so I’m not sure there much to press into if that makes sense. I will try it to test it in the next couple days 😊
Hammer mill paper, what weight are you using?
