I have been debating on which bike I would like to be my first, street legally that is, and I'm sure I'm convinced. I've raced motocross competitively my entire life and I have been reading about the Monster for weeks now, along with MANY others, but I've now locked in on my final answer. Love your videos and subscribed! Looking forward to more!
MooseLee It's a fantastic machine. It's an absolute blast, I'm sure you'll love it. If you have that much Motocross experience, you would definitely be fine starting on the 821, or even the 1200 if you like. They're both really fast, but have very smooth and predictable acceleration if you have decent throttle control.
I switched from a 2008 Honda CBR1000RR to a 2013 Harley Davidson Fat Bob a few years ago. Wanted a better cruising bike for long trips when I lived in Upstate NY. Since moving to Dallas, TX and seeing the New Ducati Monster 821, I'm most likely going to trade my Fat Bob in next year or late this year for one. I do a lot more city driving and I need something a more nimble and light weight to flip in and out of traffic. This is the perfect bike for that.
Philip Virga I love my 821, it's an awesome bike. But before you buy anything, I'd recommend you ride both the Monster 821, and the Diavel. The Diavel is an awesome city bike for someone coming from a cruiser but looking for something sporty. My buddy Taylor did an great review of it: ua-cam.com/video/F2wpknWT2W0/v-deo.html
Great review. 2 thing. Engine breaking dosnt cost any fuel. The reason for incresed fuel consumption is more than likely cause of the new exhaust changes the engine flow and the ECU cannot compensate for the changes flow causing the engine running to lean and in fact you have lost power across the RPM range and maybe gained slighty at the very top end. To not loose power you will to get the fuel/air ratio back in place with powercommander or similar device. There really is not bike with ECU that can compensate for aftermarket exhaust, thats why we have devices for this need.
MissMan666 Well engine braking itself won't cause you to burn more fuel, but before I coasted with the clutch in more frequently. Since it sounds great while engine breaking and accelerating, I find myself speeding up and slowing down more, which will use more fuel. The rest are great points and I agree.
Totally agree. I've got the opportunity to try the new 821 Monster last week at it's a brute. Wooh! The noise that thing make is fantastic. And I thought my Hyperstrada was lound... lol Not! I too think the old model had a less cramped (better) position but the new 821 has a much better gear box and engine. Congrats fellow Ducati driver.
Samy Fay I wish I could capture what this thing actually sounds like with the Comp Werkes exhaust. It's insane. Check out the video I have on it if you haven't seen it yet: ua-cam.com/video/SY5oMpTghtE/v-deo.html I agree 100% on the ride positioning. I've started to get more comfortable moving around on it, but I was way more confident throwing my weight around on my 696. There was so much more room. However, I absolutely love this new generation overall.
Thanks for the link. I will lissen to it with proper head phones to give it justice. About the confidence at driving it I guess it's only a question of time to adapt to the very light steering. This Monster feel like drive a bike: was my first impression. Crisp and light.
Hi Nathan great review and thanks for sharing... I stand 6'3'' and have some thoughts that this bike may be a little small?? what say you?? Are any adjustments needed or even poss ible for taller people?? thx
No Basis For Comparison I have around 2000 miles so far, so maybe the bracket will stop bugging me soon. I agree the dash is fantastic, much more legible than others I've used.
Hi! Thanks for the lovely review! Will you recommend this bike as a first bike? I have already pass my safety test in Bulgaria and I have a full license but don't want to spend money and time for 300cc class and outgrow it after 6 months. I’m 34 mature and not a wild head. I know that in urban mode the power is 75 HP but how is the torque….does it reduce the torque as well…my fear is that the bike has a lot torque and could catch me off guard as a new rider. Is it good at low speeds or the throttle is jerky? I think if I keep it in Urban for several months I will be OK and at later stage could proceed with Touring. Would you lease to share your two cents on the subject. Thanks in advance.
You sound like you have had few Duc's how reliable are they compared to the Japanese bikes, My last bike was a Kawasaki ZX10R, never had any problems with it. And you don't look as leaned over as I was on the ZX10.
Jesus B Ha thanks, glad you liked it. That was one part I went back and forth on whether I should cut or not. In case you didn't notice, there's a couple more videos that show the bike and the exhaust much better: Bike - ua-cam.com/video/-BJnkX-a1HI/v-deo.html Exhaust - ua-cam.com/video/SY5oMpTghtE/v-deo.html
Nathan Jones Well im glad you didn't cut it out! Definitely gave me a good laugh haha. And ill definitely make sure to take a look at those videos! Ride safe :)
Nice post and review. I ride the M1200 and love it. I'm headed to the Tail of the Dragon in a month. I just put a Corbin seat on mine. It's much more comfortable. I'm looking at replacing the cans once I pay the bike off. What type mirror did you install?
Nice! That should be a great trip. The mirror is a cheap Rizoma Spy R clone I was using to see if I liked the placement. Also, I love my Comp Werkes exhaust and I've gotten a ton of compliments on them. I have another video showing them off better.
would you recommend upgrading to a 696 or should i invest more for an 821? have been riding a cb500f for a year now, gonna upgrade in a year or two. nice review btw!
I talk about the differences a bit in my blog about picking a first bike. The biggest difference is the 821 is considerably faster, like a lot. It's also more expensive. I actually think a 796 is a much better bike to compare against, because then you get a bit more power and the sexy single sided swingarm. What are your thoughts so far? Also, check out where I talk about it more here: ua-cam.com/video/B4Cil_WQByo/v-deo.html
Constructive criticism here: focus more on what's ahead of you and less on what's around you. There's the quick look to check the traffic on the next lane and then there are those cocky stares like "Fuck yeah waddya think of this?". It's annoying and can easily put other drivers in a road racing mentality.
cool video, but I couldn't help but notice the same thing so i scrolled thru the comments just to see if someone would point that out. I've seen A LOT of bike riding videos on you tube and have never seen someone who looks around so much. Especially turning to stare down drivers 2 and 3 times. What is up with that? I'm even annoyed by it LOL.
Is that really what's happening? Yea, I noticed the looking around a lot too. But he also has only a tiny bar end mirror on his left side? I don't stare down people but I do look around a ton; I'm from L.A. And we have some real idiot drivers down here. I like to be aware of my surroundings; no mirrors on my bike.
I'm checking for people on their cell phones. It's a really big problem here in Austin. It's bad enough that they banned holding a cell phone while you're driving, but that hasn't slowed people down. I've watched a ton of rear end collisions from people being on their phones and I make it a point to check for someone being on their phone before I pass them.
Ah, see, had a feeling you were just being really cautious. All it takes is seeing one mishap to give you that pro level alertness. And the camera doesn't really capture peripheral eye glances and what not either. Also remembered no lane splitting over in Texas, don't know if that has lead to more cellphone mishaps since you can always stay ahead of the real traffic?
Thanks man. I spent way longer than that watching reviews before I got mine haha. It's a ton of fun, I love this bike. I would definitely recommend it. Let me know if you decide to get one, I'd love to see a picture or even your own UA-cam video.
Great video man, I would love to test ride one of these beauties. Also, I was in Austin last week, what a great city. I can totally see myself living there.
Nathan - I am getting ready to order the same slip on exhaust from Werkes Competition, but I got the reply from them that they do not have a product to offer for 821 ??? Is the one on your bike the model for 1200 Monster ? If yes, are they the same ? I would appreciate your reply . . .
Will the bars from the new Streetfighter fit on your Monster? I thought they had a different bend and are lower on the ends. I haven't seen them in person, but might be something to look at. Nice vid and bike... shit sounds raw.
Copper Top That's an awesome idea! I like the shape of those a lot. At first glance, they look like they're thicker but I could probably get a new clamp if needed. Thanks man!
hi there cool vid just wondered how many miles you done and any problems looking at getting one just worried about break downs want to do a lot of miles know there supposed to be better now thanks
Hey man, how is the smoothness of that 821 compared to your old 696? I currently have an 06 s2r 1000 and it's pretty raw feeling actually. I wouldn't mind a slight more refinedment at least with the takeoff. I have a feeling those liquid cooled 821 motors are a bit more refined than the air-cooled 2 valve motors. Thanks man.
+ToastToGo Much smoother so far. It still wants to have a bit of a warm up time when the weather gets cold, but it doesn't have nearly as much trouble starting. It doesn't stall or chug as much when it's cold, it's just not quite as smooth as it is at temperature.
What are your thoughts on getting it for a first bike? Thinking better than the 797 because traction control and rider modes allowing for growing into bike.
+Nathan Jones unfortunately not a monster yet, CB500 which comes with similar bars to yours, the racing series prefers the flat bars to the clip ons due to the commanding position it compliments the pegs! Looking into getting a monster this year though
Great video man. I have a 13 M796 and love it. I'm very tempted to upgrade to this bike but I may just jump to the 1200 or 1200s eventually. I love the sssa. If the only made the 821 with sssa I would of went in to the dealer already. Lol. The monsters are so much fun though. What camera are you using? I want to try and do some vlogging myself. Have a gopro and Polaroid s100.
bhegedus77 I know right? Why didn't they give me the single sided swingarm sexiness!?! Maybe they need to make an 821 S that has the SSSA and Ohlins shocks, that'd be sweet. I'm using the Drift Ghost S. Overall, it's fantastic for motovlogging. The picture quality could be a bit better, but I really like the streamline profile, the bluetooth remote, and the video tagging features that lets you record on a loop until something interesting happens. You can check it out here: natejon.es/to/driftghost
thanks Nathan, i considered that as well... but i am thinking for now i might go for the rizoma drag bars instead, they are the same width as the stock bars, but almost completely flat with no rise...i wanted a more forward/lower handlebar position... we'll see how it goes...
I found a great deal on a 2016 monster 821. I have no riding experience and live downtown. Just will be riding on the weekends and have my car paid off. Complete beginner, but was going to put it in urban mode and drive around east downtown. I also live in downtown austin! I could tell you were in lamar traffic! What dealer do you like in the area? In my mid 30s and dont want to switch out bikes every couple of years
Hi Nathan, quick question, do you think the 821 is a suitable bike for beginners? I am absolutely in love with the Ducati but I have zero bikeriding experience ... Very enjoyable vid! Keep it up!
SoleSurvivor259 Thanks man! I talked about it a bit in another video, but it really depends on the rider. It's definitely a powerful bike, so it's not going to be the best for everyone, but if you pick up riding quickly and are careful, it's definitely manageable for a beginner. I know some people that even started on the Monster 1200 . The first thing I would recommend is that you go take a riding course, here in the US that's the Basic RiderCourse by Motorcycle Safety Foundation. See how comfortable you are riding, then if you like it go buy gear, then start looking at bikes. Here's the other video I talked about it more: ua-cam.com/video/B4Cil_WQByo/v-deo.html
Nathan Jones Thank you very much Nathan. In terms of "self-discipline" while on a bike I will be fine. I'll check out the other vid right away. Have a nice weekend!
SoleSurvivor259 check out suzukis sfv650, cheaper and looks nearly identical except the underseat exhaust, it'd be a good alternative to save up for the ducati and gather some time under your belt as well.
***** thanks bud the suzuki looks great but i bought a kawasaki z750 last week. Like you said its good to get some mileage and build up experience. So excited!
I realise this was 11 months ago, but if you're still thinking of clip ons, Apex make really high quality highly adjustable ones with risers that are height and positionally adjustable. I put some on a street triple, and they were perfect. You just need to know your fork diameter.
hey I also own a 821. I have question I don't know if you can help me with this. when you let go of the handle bars in gear or neutral and you're going in a straight line does the bike lean to the right? I bought my brand new and I've had this issue. thanks
bhegedus77 Thanks! Glad to hear it. I always compare it to my friends ridiculous GoPro Hero4 Black, so it doesn't feel great, but it definitely gets the job done in a nice little package.
It's much louder than stock, but not enough that it would hurt your ears. I have a short clip if just the exhaust here if you want to hear it by itself: ua-cam.com/video/SY5oMpTghtE/v-deo.html
The Diavel is a very big, powerful and expensive bike. That's a lot of bike to try to learn on. You could definitely do it, but it may be a better idea to start on something small and cheap for a few months to get your feet wet. The Diavel is a great bike and if you're totally set on it, the riding modes will help a lot with you getting started. However, it is probably the fastest bike Ducati makes for urban riding. It's every bit as fast as the Panigale everywhere but the top end. Let me know what you end up with.
Hey Nathan, i got my Monster 821 since 3 days and i got just one problem with my gearbox. Shifting from 5.gear into the 6.gear, the "gear" falls into a neutral position, so that i have to stop and start with gear 1. You got the same struggles as me?
Yes. That happened all the time before the break in service. It barely ever happens now. Until you get the first service, just take it easy and try to make your shift firm and smooth. It was also originally really difficult to get into neutral and now it's a piece of cake. Enjoy a fantastic bike! The quirks will sort themselves out.
+qoyote I haven't gone more than an hour or so but I didn't notice the seat being uncomfortable then. There are quite a few aftermarket options if it is an issue.
Thank you Nathan for sharing your experience. I have couple of question though 1. is the clutch hard or easy to pull coz i checked out the 821 at a ducati outlet here in Mumbai, India and i felt it to be really hard. 2. How is the 821 is stop and go traffic [Mumbai Traffic is horrible 20~40 km/h in early morning rush hour ], does the engine heat up. 3. I heard the power kicks in after 5000 rpm , why does that do when we are in stop go traffic. 4. Also couple of other things which i did not realize was the foot-peg placement the pillion rider might have problems placing his feet 5. no fuel gauge is that true ? how will i know when my tanks gonna get empty then.
+Sanket Sonavane a couple of answers: 1) The clutch is much softer than other bikes I've ridden on. After around 30 minutes of standstill traffic my hand starts to get tired, but it's fine in normal traffic. 2) It gets warm, but even sitting still her in 100+ °F temps it's been fine. The radiator fans make sure the bike doesn't get too hot. 3) It's got plenty of torque down low. It's much faster at higher RPMs, but it doesn't struggle one bit in traffic. 4) The pillion foot-peg placement drove me nuts initially, now it's more of a mild annoyance. The new Monster 1200 R has an updated design for those pegs which solves the problem, so that may carry over to smaller bikes soon. 5) There is no fuel gauge, but it does have a trip odometer which I reset when I get gas and there's a low fuel light that comes on when you have ~1 gallon of fuel left. I get about 30-50 miles when that comes on so there's plenty of time to get gas.
+Abhishek Subbaiah Answer is simple take a few test rides , better find a person who owns it and ride for sometime. If you feel at home go for it else hold. I have a Duke 390 already and i was somehow not convinced with the Monster 821 but its an awesome ride none the less just it does not check everything on my list. I am awaiting the updated Street Triple that Triumph might come up with also there is so much competition in the 800cc segment. Yamaha MT-09 , Z800 etc.
+Sanket Sonavane That's strange - I noticed the difference almost instantaneously when I rode it, or any twin or inline 4 after riding a single.. was just curious as to whether you ended up buying it
Hey guys, I am in the market on buying my first bike. I'm between a Monster 797, 821 or a Triumph street twin. looking for something that can do a bit of everything. I haven't ride either of them. what would you suggest?
+CooLDsteR If it's particularly windy, I'll usually do a 3/4 or full tuck, which feels pretty natural with the Rizoma drag bars. Other than that, I don't have any issues on the highway.
SangNguyen1996 The longest I've gone so far is an hour or so, but it's always been really comfortable. The seat has about an inch of adjustment, so you would probably be alright. However, the Hypermotard or the Multistrata would definitely be more upright. The best thing to do would be to just go sit on it, most dealers wouldn't have any issues adjusting the seat for you so that you can see if it fits.
SangNguyen1996 They're both really cool bikes. The Diavel is more capable that I expected, here's a fun video of an awesome custom one: ua-cam.com/video/DapcfpjdUoc/v-deo.html
None. It's fantastic. I've found that the Termignoni is more refined and the Comp Werkes is more brutal. It's much louder and throatier, which I personally love but not everyone does.
There are definitely more reasonable choices as far as a first bike goes, but if your heart is set on this bike specifically, it's definitely manageable for a first time rider. Personally, if money wasn't an issue, I would probably recommend riding a 696 or 796 for a season then upgrade to the newly updated 1200. They just made a lot of great changes to that bike, and I think it's undeniably worth the cost to upgrade now. The most notable change is a vastly improved passenger peg setup, which doesn't get in the way of your heel like the current setup does. I've spent a lot of money upgrading my bike, but it'll never have a single sided swing arm, which I'd really like to have.
I'm 5'11". The stock seat is adjustable and I have it on the lower setting. There's also some options for taller seats if you still find yourself cramped. You can also get and adjustable rearset like the Ducabike one I have and get some more flexibility.
Go watch the Gizmag review of the Zero electric bike, it ticks all the boxes for me, minus the looks. If I had the money, I'd get one of those for my commutes and get something silly for the weekends.
I like your bike! and you're a motovlogger. so ill be your number 1 fan LOL ride safe man, say hi to taylor for me. and you and taylor should do dual vlog.
The weight is all low down so it doesn't feel anywhere near the 205 kg, I used to have a Honda VFR and that thing weighed a lot, the weight was all high, had no confidence on it at all. The monster is the best bike i've ever had.
Skidd Lidd Andy Yeah definitely, as long as you keep it upright. I've had to catch it a time or two and you definitely start to feel that weight in a hurry when it's not upright. Mine is also probably only 440 lbs or so (~200 kg) with the mods I've done.
One of my prev bikes was a VFR800 and that was really heavy, high up too. Dropped that getting it off the centre stand and pulled me right over with it. Im happy with the stock can so not planning on replacing them. Se far I have changed out the levers put and engine and radiator guard on and replaced some parts with carbon parts. Do you have any idea what the ducati windscreen is like for protection on this?
I haven't used the windscreen for this bike, but I did see it on an 821 Stripe last time I was at the dealer. It looks good, but I can't speak to how well it works.
+Nathan Jones Since this I have invested in the ducati screen and its very effective for the size, looks nice too. Ive also put on a belly pan and some nice bar end mirrors, was thinking of making a vid of it to show it off but never actually done a youtube vid despite being a member over two accounts for a very long time :-)
Use your mirrors Cheech. Although rear end accidents are rare, with more and more people using their phones and being distracted it's a very real danger. Also, rear end accidents w motorcycles have the lowest survival rate (by a landslide). I always stay in gear and watch behind me when I come to a stop at a light.
Thanks for the feedback. I'm aware of the dangers of rear end collisions and try to keep an eye out for it. Even if it doesn't seem like it, I can see behind me with my bar end mirrors and I'm usually it gear until there's a car stopped behind me.
+jonathan becker No, not really. There's a bit when you're completely stopped for a while, but then it's coming from the engine as much as the exhaust. It's never too bad though.
Tyler Williams Yeah man, you pay extra for that. Actually, I accidentally enabled UA-cam's image stabilization... which is terrible. Last time I make that mistake.
Thanks man. Yeah that's what happened. Since my channel started getting more popular I've tried to actually edit my videos before uploading and the quality is a bit better on the newer ones.
Just got a reply from WERKES Comp. that they are no longer offering this slip on for 821 (only for 1200) as it causes problems with the ECU ??? They are allegedly in a process of reaching out to their dealers to let them know they should not sell it any more for 821 ??? WTF ? And I was just about to place the order . . .
It's a Competition Werkes, I have a video of it here: ua-cam.com/video/SY5oMpTghtE/v-deo.html Here's a link: www.motovationusa.com/ducati-monster-821-1200-gp-slip-on-exhaust-by-competition-werkes.html
Trevor Scott If you haven't already seen his channel, my buddy Taylor202 just moved down here from Dallas, so maybe we can both go take a road trip up there some time. Check out his channel: ua-cam.com/users/TaylorsGarage202
Tagan Williamson REV'IT Mohawk boots. I wear them every day rain or shine and they've held up great so far. You can check them out here: natejon.es/to/revitmohawk
I love the look of it and it definitely protects your boot, but I unfortunately lost mine. The boot has held up just fine without it, but it might be worth thinking of a way to secure it better.
Bikes get amazing gas mileage, no reason for an electric :) you would loose that amazing Ducati exhaust note! emmissions vs emissions from cars to bikes. One out weighs the other ;p
I'm actually not at all concerned with the "gas" mileage. You're right, the mileage is fine already. Electric motors have epic torque and really great performance. Most reviewers that have ridden some of the few electric bikes out there have agreed it's an unbelievable experience. All that said, there's always room for a throaty Ducati exhaust.
There is no point really to drive in something else then sport mode. Personly I think it has to less power to be fun in the other modes. However, I like the top choice. But I'm prity sure i will change it for something bigger and more powerfull in a couple of seasons.
You can move to any size bike if you've got enough practice on the 250 and feel comfortable. Just take it easy when you first move to the bigger bike and you'll be fine.
greenmarine5 Well if it starts giving me any issues I'll post an update. But 8000 miles of all-weather commuting between two Ducati's and I haven't had a single issue so far. Also, thanks for your service. My brother is a Marine too.
Im just year because my dealership is selling one of these with 6k miles on it for $7,000.. damn wish I waited a little longer before buying the bike I got
I love the sound of this bike. I'm glad you're having fun with it.
I have been debating on which bike I would like to be my first, street legally that is, and I'm sure I'm convinced. Samy Fay Ha yeah, that's always confusing. There should really be a better abbreviation.
Damn I love this bike. The exhaust just makes it perfect 👌🏻
Thanks Man for your videos!
Just bought mine yesterday! Can't wait to get it on thursday.
Cheers from Canada!
Awesome! Enjoy it, its a great bike.
Which model did you go with?
Hi Nathan
great review and thanks for sharing...
I stand 6'3'' and have some thoughts that this bike may be a little small??
what say you??
Are any adjustments needed or even poss

thx
Found that after 5000 miles i don't notice the bracket anymore, at all. I love the dash on the 821 as well also very easy to ride.
No Basis For Comparison I have around 2000 miles so far, so maybe the bracket will stop bugging me soon. I agree the dash is fantastic, much more legible than others I've used.
Wow, nearly 20 mins of damn straight roads!! That Ducati of yours would love the twisties of Scotland better!
This is the Monster I want.
Hi! Thanks for the lovely review! Will you recommend this bike as a first bike? +Rian Cousens, you're close. This is in Austin, but it's just East of Brodie.
+Nathan Jones I knew I was close! Just checked Facebook and we even have a mutual friend. Small world! (Nathan Reid)
You sound like you have had few Duc's how reliable are they compared to the Japanese bikes, My last bike was a Kawasaki ZX10R, never had any problems with it. And you don't look as leaned over as I was on the ZX10.

Nathan Jones how do you change the abs and dtc settings
Almost choked on my food at 11:19. Probably laughed more than i should have haha. Also nice bike and review👍👍
Jesus B Ha thanks, glad you liked it. That was one part I went back and forth on whether I should cut or not.
In case you didn't notice, there's a couple more videos that show the bike and the exhaust much better:
Bike - ua-cam.com/video/-BJnkX-a1HI/v-deo.html
Exhaust - ua-cam.com/video/SY5oMpTghtE/v-deo.html
Nathan Jones Well im glad you didn't cut it out! Definitely gave me a good laugh haha.
And ill definitely make sure to take a look at those videos! Ride safe :)
Jesus B Thanks man, take care!
Quite a really nice motorcycle you've got there.
ToastToGo Thanks! I enjoy it.
The UA-cam stabilizing makes me feel sick :D
+Gandalf m8 Yeaaaah, I didn't mean to do that and won't make that mistake again.
ur vlogs are awesome
I enjoy watching
I like the sound of the bike thumps up man
Muhammad Firdaus Thanks! Yeah I love this exhaust, it's badass.
Also, check out where I talk about it more here:
ua-cam.com/video/B4Cil_WQByo/v-deo.html
Dude that bike sounds amazing!!
That´s one clean Monster. Sounds great
reconstrucdead1 Thanks man! I love it.
Nice motorcycle
Sounds absolutly amazing
Thanks.
Hey man. I really love your bike. I purchased a 696 about 6 weeks ago and I am looking for a pair of slip-ons for the future, got any recommendations?
Well well well. I just subbed. I have been on UA-cam for about 3 hours now looking at reviews. And, I might get the 821
Thanks man!
Nathan Jones You're welcome. I hope they'll actually work for you.
hi there cool vid just wondered how many miles you done and any problems looking at getting one just worried about break downs want to do a lot of miles know there supposed to be better now thanks
Know this is an old video, but I have put renthal flat bars on my bike and it transformed it but it's still usable. lower but not massively low
+James Barnes Awesome, I'd love to see a picture or video if you have one. I haven't seen a Monster with Renthal bars before.
You can check it out here:
natejon.es/to/driftghost
Not being that familiar with Ducati I really enjoyed your video. Just looking at the
bars can you rotate them down a little to lower your hands?
great vid Nathan, so any luck with clip on handlebars for the 821? I have a dark, and have been looking for a slighly lower/narrower handlebar...
+Daniyal Syed Not yet. Someone earlier suggested using bars from the Diavel, which seems like it could work.
thanks Nathan, i considered that as well... but i am thinking for now i might go for the rizoma drag bars instead, they are the same width as the stock bars, but almost completely flat with no rise...i wanted a more forward/lower handlebar position... we'll see how it goes...
quick question: are you still driving 821 and the feeling when driving it is as good as the first time?
Here's the other video I talked about it more:
ua-cam.com/video/B4Cil_WQByo/v-deo.html
Nathan Jones Thank you very much Nathan. In terms of "self-discipline" while on a bike I will be fine. I'll check out the other vid right away. Have a nice weekend!
SoleSurvivor259 check out suzukis sfv650, cheaper and looks nearly identical except the underseat exhaust, it'd be a good alternative to save up for the ducati and gather some time under your belt as well.
SoleSurvivor259 also, the sfv650 has like 70? hp which is just above half the 821 so it still has get up and go, but it isnt over whelming, you know?
***** thanks bud the suzuki looks great but i bought a kawasaki z750 last week. Like you said its good to get some mileage and build up experience. So excited!
Yeah that exhaust is the best
I realise this was 11 months ago, but if you're still thinking of clip ons, Apex make really high quality highly adjustable ones with risers that are height and positionally adjustable.
I put some on a street triple, and they were perfect. You just need to know your fork diameter.
Thanks for the tip, those look nice.
hey I also own a 821. I have question I don't know if you can help me with this. when you let go of the handle bars in gear or neutral and you're going in a straight line does the bike lean to the right? I bought my brand new and I've had this issue. thanks
Have you come across any handlebar risers for a more upright position? The stock bars are a skosh too low for me.
Video quality is great
bhegedus77 Thanks! Glad to hear it.
I always compare it to my friends ridiculous GoPro Hero4 Black, so it doesn't feel great, but it definitely gets the job done in a nice little package.
thanks for the review! how much louder is that exhaust over stock?
It's much louder than stock, but not enough that it would hurt your ears.
I have a short clip if just the exhaust here if you want to hear it by itself: ua-cam.com/video/SY5oMpTghtE/v-deo.html
How do you like this bike vs. the Diavel? I was thinking the Diavel for maybe first bike possibly?
The Diavel is a very big, powerful and expensive bike. That's a lot of bike to try to learn on. You could definitely do it, but it may be a better idea to start on something small and cheap for a few months to get your feet wet.
The Diavel is a great bike and if you're totally set on it, the riding modes will help a lot with you getting started. However, it is probably the fastest bike Ducati makes for urban riding. It's every bit as fast as the Panigale everywhere but the top end.
Let me know what you end up with.
best talk about the footpegs issue.. to me a deal braker. ..still wonderfull bike. cheers
Hey Nathan,
i got my Monster 821 since 3 days and i got just one problem with my gearbox.
So how do you find riding the bike for a few hours like? Taking smaller road-trips and so on?
+qoyote I haven't gone more than an hour or so but I didn't notice the seat being uncomfortable then. There are quite a few aftermarket options if it is an issue.
Thank you Nathan for sharing your experience.
I have couple of question though
1. is the clutch hard or easy to pull coz i checked out the 821 at a ducati outlet here in Mumbai, India and i felt it to be really hard.
2. How is the 821 is stop and go traffic [Mumbai Traffic is horrible 20~40 km/h in early morning rush hour ], does the engine heat up.
3. I heard the power kicks in after 5000 rpm , why does that do when we are in stop go traffic.
4. Also couple of other things which i did not realize was the foot-peg placement the pillion rider might have problems placing his feet
5. no fuel gauge is that true ? how will i know when my tanks gonna get empty then.
+Sanket Sonavane a couple of answers:
1) The clutch is much softer than other bikes I've ridden on.
+Nathan Jones thanks a lot for answering my queries.
+Sanket Sonavane So did you get one? Similar situation here.. I think I might just pick one up for myself
How is it on the freeway? I often feel windy/shifty with naked, non-fairing bikes at 60+.
+CooLDsteR If it's particularly windy, I'll usually do a 3/4 or full tuck, which feels pretty natural with the Rizoma drag bars. Other than that, I don't have any issues on the highway.
hi! have u done any long distance ride? hows the comfort ? i'm 6foot2 tall with kinda bad knees though :(
SangNguyen1996 The longest I've gone so far is an hour or so, but it's always been really comfortable. The seat has about an inch of adjustment, so you would probably be alright. However, the Hypermotard or the Multistrata would definitely be more upright.
The best thing to do would be to just go sit on it, most dealers wouldn't have any issues adjusting the seat for you so that you can see if it fits.
Nathan Jones thanks for reply! guess i'll have some test ride first then .still hesitate with the diavel Xp
SangNguyen1996 They're both really cool bikes.
The Diavel is more capable that I expected, here's a fun video of an awesome custom one: ua-cam.com/video/DapcfpjdUoc/v-deo.html
Are you driving on Brodie Lane in Austin by any chance?
Iam looking to buy a exaught for my dark. I am kind of torn between this and the termigoni. Have you had any issues with the exaught. Thanks
None. It's fantastic.
I've found that the Termignoni is more refined and the Comp Werkes is more brutal. It's much louder and throatier, which I personally love but not everyone does.
thanks
Hi did u remap the ecu or auto tuner? can i get away with no tune?
Would you recommend the monster 821 for a beginner bike and for daily traveling
He never responded...
How is it for a highway ride 2.5 hours?
Versus say a Hypermotard
Windy. But not too bad. Just tuck in if you want and you're good.
Is this a bike for people who have never owned a bike but have had experience? I've got the money for it and I've heard Urban mode is perfect
Nathan Jones Thanks for the input man!
Hello, I'm wondering how tall you are to see how good of a fit the Monster would be for me, seeing that I'm 6'4"
I'm 5'11". The stock seat is adjustable and I have it on the lower setting. There's also some options for taller seats if you still find yourself cramped. You can also get and adjustable rearset like the Ducabike one I have and get some more flexibility.
I love the diavel :)
Is that a full or slip-on? Sounds great
nvm found your other vid :)
Go watch the Gizmag review of the Zero electric bike, it ticks all the boxes for me, minus the looks. If I had the money, I'd get one of those for my commutes and get something silly for the weekends.
Great video! I would love to ride with you guys!
***** Thanks! Are you around Central Texas? I'm always around riding every day.
I am in Central Texas! live in Leander.
Where do you guys meet up? any favorites?
Camera you're using?
awesome bike and review :) can you change your cam position to the chin of your helmet? its better in that position :) and sorry for the bad english.
SmileMore :) Vlog*
Thanks! I like the chin mount position too, in not sure if it will work with my camera though. I'll test out a few options.
I like your bike! and you're a motovlogger. so ill be your number 1 fan LOL ride safe man, say hi to taylor for me. and you and taylor should do dual vlog.
SmileMore :) thanks! We're planning on doing one again soon.
My motovlog #1 is with Taylor, and there's a link to his version in the description.
nice bike color
Thanks!
what year is your ducati?
Is this a good beginner bike?
Haha! "I've got 3 kids, I don't need 'em anyway."
I've got 2 teenagers, and I can relate
+Michael Brown ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Their job is done. Now gimme my Tesla!
+Michael Brown ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Their job is done. Now gimme my Tesla!
Cool, thanks bro, that will be my next upgrade I think.
+Nathan Jones Since this I have invested in the ducati screen and its very effective for the size, looks nice too. Ive also put on a belly pan and some nice bar end mirrors, was thinking of making a vid of it to show it off but never actually done a youtube vid despite being a member over two accounts for a very long time :-)
What kind of oil should I use for oil change? I have a 2016 Ducati monster 821 stripe
苏悦 Use mustard oil😂😂
nice vid
How tall are you and can you flat foot this monster?
That,s first Ducati series 821?
Use your mirrors Cheech. Although rear end accidents are rare, with more and more people using their phones and being distracted it's a very real danger. Also, rear end accidents w motorcycles have the lowest survival rate (by a landslide). I always stay in gear and watch behind me when I come to a stop at a light.
Thanks for the feedback. I'm aware of the dangers of rear end collisions and try to keep an eye out for it. Even if it doesn't seem like it, I can see behind me with my bar end mirrors and I'm usually it gear until there's a car stopped behind me.
Much heat from the exhaust on your right thigh?
+jonathan becker No, not really. There's a bit when you're completely stopped for a while, but then it's coming from the engine as much as the exhaust. It's never too bad though.
seasick... I'm fealing seasick.... watching this fullscreen on my tv is not a good idea lol
+Ali Norman Yeah, wtf is up with that distortion? :|
+scottkarana Sorry. Blame Google's crappy stabilization.
did you put warp stabilizer on the video?
Tyler Williams Yeah man, you pay extra for that.
Actually, I accidentally enabled UA-cam's image stabilization... which is terrible. Last time I make that mistake.
I thought something looked funky ahah great video nonetheless! Subbed!
WTF ? And I was just about to place the order . . .
This is the first I've heard that. I haven't had any issues at all with their exhaust, so that's strange.
what exhaust have you got?
It's a Competition Werkes, I have a video of it here:
ua-cam.com/video/SY5oMpTghtE/v-deo.html
Here's a link:
www.motovationusa.com/ducati-monster-821-1200-gp-slip-on-exhaust-by-competition-werkes.html
Nathan Jones Thanks man. Sounds awesome
is this bike good for be a first bike?
+Emilio Ossa absolutely no.
No
Emilio Ossa I say start on any bike that you are able to afford, love and not sacred to death by it
Which place u ride
0:04 the neighbours dog is taking a shit. That is all.
+Michael Caissie Plot twist. That's not the neighbor!
Hopefully she picked up afterwards...
Ohhh yeah, it's good to be back.
Lol
oh shit that's austin
Rickey Padilla Yep :)
Are you here in town? Maybe I'll see you around.
Nathan Jones come take a ride to the Dallas-Fort worth area
Trevor Scott If you haven't already seen his channel, my buddy Taylor202 just moved down here from Dallas, so maybe we can both go take a road trip up there some time. Check out his channel:
ua-cam.com/users/TaylorsGarage202
Okay Sweet! I'm new to the area. Just moved a few days ago, so I have no idea where anything is. I will definitely take a look at his YT
You got a new sub , where’s the 696 review
What shoes are you wearing in this video?
Tagan Williamson REV'IT Mohawk boots. I wear them every day rain or shine and they've held up great so far.
You can check them out here: natejon.es/to/revitmohawk
Nathan Jones Sweet, thanks! They're pretty awesome, is the shifting cushion useful?
I love the look of it and it definitely protects your boot, but I unfortunately lost mine. The boot has held up just fine without it, but it might be worth thinking of a way to secure it better.
it's a nice towny where you live in!
Alexander23 Thanks! Love it here in Austin.
"good to be back" Hero hahaha
i muted it when i heard that
There is no point really to drive in something else then sport mode. Personly I think it has to less power to be fun in the other modes. However, I like the top choice. But I'm prity sure i will change it for something bigger and more powerfull in a couple of seasons.
I'm a beginner, my fist bike had a 250CC engine. Can I jump to 820CCs?
You can move to any size bike if you've got enough practice on the 250 and feel comfortable. Just take it easy when you first move to the bigger bike and you'll be fine.
Ducabike also do rear sets, but not cheap either
kem1967 Hopefully soon there will be more aftermarket options and the prices will come down a bit
Yeah, a bit frustrating at the moment.. 821 has been out since late 2014 and still not a lot around.
Ride the Duc every day for 4 years and tell every one how reliable it is......lol .other than that stay safe and have fun
greenmarine5 Well if it starts giving me any issues I'll post an update. But 8000 miles of all-weather commuting between two Ducati's and I haven't had a single issue so far.
Also, thanks for your service. My brother is a Marine too.
Im just year because my dealership is selling one of these with 6k miles on it for $7,000.. damn wish I waited a little longer before buying the bike I got
get 1200, you need it...
Price?
MSRP is just under $11k but I've seen a few demo models for $10k or less with around 500 miles.
Oh ok thanks
Ducati people be Ducati people
I take the KTM 1290 SuperDuke no doubt..
