Yea i have thought to do that. That's actually kinda a dream of mine. I just want an acre or 2 of land for the dogs to run around on and a few pygmy goats lol and an aviary i want some parrots and a tiny house lol. I would love to go and live life down to the basics down to how our ancestors lived. It might be nice to do animal rescue or have an animal sanctuary or do pet boarding. Or sit around and do art all day for a living. I just feel like that's some years away in order to make that all happen. But doesnt hurt to dream and make goals and have ideas.
BTW I know what you mean. I spent 13 years on the railroad. I built an entire I.T. dept from scratch while I drove trains. I'm so sick of railroading and computers now that I am out, I'm not going back. I had complete autonomy and I LOVED IT. I was the head of my department and I made all the decisions. I LOVED IT. But when my dad fell sick I realized life has to change. I needed to change. I couldnt' keep doing something just because I knew how, and I was good at it. Stagnation in life is far worse then you think. You should try dog grooming. My G/F is making pretty good money doing it. I gotta admit. she is making ALOT more money then I ever did on the RR. Not that I mind. We have been thinking about starting our own mobile pet grooming business because the money is that good. She got started at Petco. I gave her grief at first, but now I know I was wrong. Like you, I am a jack of all trades. I can fix cars, computers, KINDA groom dogs..(My G/F is teaching me) I can grow crops, but I am utterly useless at landscaping. I cant trim a hedge to save my life! I'm the same age as your B/F. (47)
Yea in another life i worked as a dog groomer for almost 2 years. It's sooo hard on your body. Im too much a perfectionist and kinda slow when it comes to the haircuts so they put me on dog bathes & blow outs and everything but haircuts and so i helped out the goomers too. I've actually looked into the Mobil dog grooming business and wanted to add that service to my business. I have a close friend whose a dog groomer for 16 years now. We wanted to do that together but other things in my life happened so we never got to do it. And she's kinda retired out of it cuz it's killer on the body. It definitely can make good money. I would definitely recommend the Mobil dog grooming route. Especially a plus if you guys can do it together then all the money goes back into your pockets or into your own business. There's companies that have the vans all set up and you just pay it off monthly. Or.... you can buy the vehicle (a short skoolie or van) and build one out your selves. The upside is you can make it super custom, true you'll have to do all the buildout your self and come up with that money first but once you do those first groom dogs the money is all yours. If you would like more info on this topic let me know i can make a video or maybe we'll email chat or something.
Landscaping is all about having the right tools, experience, practice, creativity, and listening to the plants. Forget what half the clients want. They will keep changing their minds and they don't know much hence is why they hired you lol. I never knew as much about plants till just getting in there and it's like science, cause and affect. Everything either needs more water, food or sun or a tad less of any of these factors. I hate doing the regular weekly clients route is boring, the mow, blow, rake up trim a little here and there. Na i like the bigger challenge like when the yard is a disaster or everything is dead and you start over and create little spaces like flower beds, walkways, planters, grass areas etc. Gardening, i haven't gotten to do much of that in my life. Never lived anywhere long enough to do that but i do ok keeping plants alive lol. Gardening/landscaping is hard on the body too but does keep you active. Jeff's dad did it till he was 80! It's only his mind that went so he had to stop. I think it's healthy for people to do different jobs all through their lives. I don't believe people should do one or 2 careers then retire & rot away. I think we should all always keep learning, growing and working for as long as possible but also enjoy life and do things at a more slower or chill/ comfortable pace.
Yeah when I was in the woods in a van alone I avoided ghost hunting shows on my laptop because it would start to freak me out.. :) Me and my G/F have been thinking the same thing on moving. Oregon and Washington State. My G/F and I did a grand tour of those two states in my van and we LOVED IT a few years ago. Only one problem: We discovered that smallish town Oregon and Washington State have HUGE meth and heroin problems. We ran into so many tweakers on the road while up there. Lots of poverty and stuff. Its a trade off. The Portland burbs are OK as long as you stay out of the south end. North of Seattle is nice. Spokane SUCKED.
Omg! On petsits, Jeff's left the tv on the ghost hunting shows as ive dosed off to sleep. omg i already have crazy dreams as it is i don't need those shows playing into my dreams as well. He watches them on his phone too in the van. I finally found him some headphones so i don't have to hear it lol. He never grew up in haunted houses like i did nor i don't think he can feel those spirits like i can or maybe im just crazy? Lol. Science still needs to figure that one out lol.
Yea i know what you mean. No one ever talks about how bad downtown Portland is. Tho their zoo is nice. My friend lives in eugene Oregon. That seemed like a cute little town. These days im leaning towards oregon. I don't think it gets as rainy nor as cold as Washington and it's kinda in the middle if you wanna ever visit Canada, Washington or California, or idaho, utah etc. Colorado was an option but i think id miss the beaches so i prefer coastal states. I would love to tour Oregon again and see where i might want to settle in a bit. When i went through there & washington a few years ago i didn't get the chance to explore i was too sick and ran out of time. I would love to go explore there again just not sure when yet.
Have you ever considered going "off the grid" and growing your own food on a piece of land? It can be an interesting lifestyle.
