One thing I forget to say. Don't fret or worry about the scenery. If it doesn't come out the way you want it, it can be changed or fixed. It's good that you are using an actual photograph of the area for a reference. Sometimes your mistakes and failures while doing scenery end up being your best work in the long run. Have Fun!
I have used masking tape on the risers as well as strips of plaster cloth, the masking tape was the easiest and it worked fine. Just cover the gaps, don’t tape parallel to the track.
If your bridge is going to be a kit, check your track separation. Most two track bridge kits use 2 inch on center. It could also be an opportunity to separate the tracks even more and use two different styles of bridge giving the impression the second track was added some time after the first.
Thanks for the helpful tip! I was not aware of that bridge standard but am happy to hear it as the track in that area is on 2" centers. When I laid the track, I wasn't sure what I was going to do for bridges there. I have several types in my inventory to try out and I am willing to attempt a scratchbuild or kitbash if necessary. However, hearing the info you just shared, I think one of the Micro Engineering bridges I have already will work. There is a particular bridge I have in mind and plan to print off a photo of the prototype for reference which I will display on the layout for future videos until the bridge is installed. It won't be large, just a standard plate girder type that crosses a shallow dry ravine. The hardest part will be finding and applying the Rio Grande decal to match the prototype.
I’m a scenery virgin too. You’ve done a great job on everything else so I think you’ll do fine and I like the confidence of, “I’ve watched hours of video so I should be okay…. Lol. I’ve watched years of how to’s and a lot of times it just doesn’t transfer for me. Hopefully you will do better with your skills.
The river is the most daunting challenge in my mind but since that is last, I feel better about it. Besides the 20' long river, I don't feel like what I am attempting should be all that difficult. I guess we'll find out soon!
Are you going to model the "hanging bridge" for the bridge you pointed out? That bridge is about as iconic as it gets for the Royal Gorge. If so you'll need to plan on an aisle side "cliff" to hang it from. Lot's of different thicknesses of foam stacked vertically (maybe at angles) for strata a few inches thick against the backdrop and carved would be awesome to replicate the deep cliffs. Good luck!! I looking forward to seeing how it comes out!
Originally, I did consider adding the hanging bridge because I had seen it on another layout and knew it could be done, but I don't think I have an appropriate location on my layout to model both canyon walls. I would really need at outside corner to both effectively model it, and still allow it to be seen from the aisle. I decided to focus more on the line west of the gorge itself, especially the areas that can be viewed from Highway 50 across the river. I was going to add the Martin Marietta quarry near Parkdale in the corner near Canon City on my layout but decided to go full-on scenery only. Thanks for the suggestion and tips though and thanks for watching!
@@KandWRailroader in HO scale the cliff from track to the bridge above the river would be about 10 feet high if done to scale.....my dream layout would have it LOL During covid lockdown I did a track plan form Canon City to Minturn (well some bits of it) on anyrail6 using google earth to plot the track, I just need a lotto win for the massive shed required 100' x 60' ish!!!!
Hi K&W Railroader & it's is Randy and i like yours video is Cool & Thanks K&W Railroader & Friends Randy

Wow! Your layout is coming together nicely - it is going to look stunning as it progresses. Thank you for sharing 👍🚂
Thank you! And thanks for watching!
Coming along well don’t rush the scenery it all takes time but you’ll get it. Can’t wait to see the progress. Have a great rest of your day

I had an idea and just jumped in. I like the way mine turned out and I'm sure yours will look great too.
Thanks for the vote of confidence!
Cover the foam risers with masking tape...
Thanks! I had forgotten that as an option.

just put masking tape over the risers before you lay track on it and it takes care of the ballast problem and is way way simpler.
Already started that process but thanks for the idea reinforcement!
