I am big fan of Ustad Vilayat Khan sahab. I watched this documentary with great excitement however, I was disappointed at the end. Ustad Vilayat Khan sahab life story is incomplete without mentioning another great Sitar player and his own son Ustad Shujaat Khan sahab. I had the opportunity to attend his performances in California few years back. Overall, I think this documentary appears to be a narrow point of view. The great Ustad Shahid Pervaiz and Ustad Raees Khan sahab are also not discussed in this documentary.
Salaam Zila thank you for this beautiful documentary of Ustad Vilayat Khan. Your esteemed father is by long stride my favourite sitarist amongst the greatest. I was hoping to ask if you could help met to know if you can help me to find a place to buy a copy of your fathers album from 1996 of Raag Bhairavi ALAP & JOR recording. I am searching but cannot find this album available anywhere.
My Guru (Pt. Sachinda Nath Saha) who took right hand Talim from Vilayat, said his technique was the best. My guru was also a student of Dabir Khan for his left hand. He also said Vilayat's style was not really suited to Alap in the Dhrupad sense. That is where Ravi and Nikhil scored over Vilayat. I know many Vilayat fans and followers would disagree but since his Sitar didn't have the deeper Karaj strings, so it was physically and technically impossible to explore the sonorous bass range of the instrument. His instrument was more suited to Khayal and Thumri styles. In fact their Gharana used to use Surbahar for Alap and Jod and then change over to Sitar for the Gat section. My preference was toward Nikhil Banerjee who combined many elements of both musical styles.
@@tripmonk0 That is what they used to do. If you listen to Enayat Khan's recordings (old 78s) both of Surbahar and Sitar, you can here him announce this and he ends with saying 'father of Vilayet Khan'!! Their Sitars were smaller so they could play fast. Imrat didn't play Surbahar in the traditional Dhrupad sense. He played it like a big Sitar. When I roaded for him I discussed that with him. Trouble with Imrat it was all 'only his Gharana was the 'true' Gharana since they were supposedly 7 generations of them at it and since Ravi had learned from a Sarodi he couldn't play Sitar'!! I pointed out that Ravi played Sitar but not like him but I think that went above his head!!
This documentary is a moving account of a torch bearer of great , eternal , enchanting , mysterious , devotional Indian music of Late Ustad Vilayat Khan through his magical sitar, who loved and lived music in his life . He was a purist to the core! Our Namaskaaras to him.
Dear Zilaji, thank you for the wonderful documentary on the life of Sitar Maestro Ustad Vilayat Khan. He was truly a legend and his music will continue to entertain us for generations. 🙏
Thankyou so much for this beautiful memory of the great sitarist, Ustad Vilayat Khan. My sitar teacher, Pt. Ghulam Qadir Khan, of Jaipur often spoke to me with great fondness of your father.

Pandit Ravi Shankar sang through the Sitar. But the Sitar started singing, when touched by Ustad Vilayat Khan Sahab🙏🙏🙏
No commentary by Ustad Rais Khan ??? I believe he is also related to him.

Simply amazing. There is nothing like the classical music from Hind. Thank you very much for uploading.

Then you use the surbahar. Kharaj strings were only added to stop the need to carry a surbahar around with them.
