- In this episode, we take a look at the vast majority of glitches in Super Mario Bros. 3. Most of these glitches work on the original, Mario Allstars and Super Mario Advance 4! There are more glitches in the game, I know!
Huge thanks to Lord Tom's footage of the glitch in 7-1 that skips to the ending. Go check his run out in full!

Wow! Talk about a walk down memory lane. I recently lost my mom and this was her favorite Super Mario. She would play the whole game get 99 lives get to world 8 and hand the controller over to me and say "I don't know how to beat this world, you do it Charlie." Thank you for making this video, it brings back very good memories.
+Charles Gayman glad you enjoyed it dude, and hope you're ok. Take care :)
+Charles Gayman how old was your mom..im so sorry
+Charles Gayman This is the last game I ever watched my mom beat, I feel ya.
She's not dead, luckily, but she stopped playing games once controllers got joysticks. I got good at controller joysticks, and dad followed, and mom prefers sharing a save with dad while he plays lol
I'm sorry for your loss
Thank you all of you. My mom was 69 when she passed. I'm just glad I was there to see her off. Yeah my mom coudn't get the joysticks down either but she did master Bust-a-Move for the PS1. She couldn't play anything else lol.
Final glitch for the less nerdy:
You're entering a pipe in a glitched way that causes the game to derp out and run code based on enemies' positions. By manipulating their positions you can cause the game to skip to the end.
or "you put enemies in certain places then go in a invisible pipe" in a more short way
Or "You go into an invisible pipe"
*derp out*
Or "Glitch the game to win."
or "break game, win"
Once when I was a kid, I played this game with a friend on his NES. I don't know if the cartridge was in the NES wrong, if there was something jut wrong with the cartridge, or if my friend just had a shoddy NES, but we turned it on, there was some glitchy images, and suddenly we were greeted with the end of the game. Never happened again.
Dragonrider1227 It was probably the cartridge.
Pickleodeon The Weegee
yeah, I get the feeling it was too

The hammer suit sliding sprite seems more like it was an intended placeholder for the case of obtaining the power-up while sliding, rather than being an unused sprite. It IS used. It’s just a rare occurrence.
I absolutely love your videos. There are so many shows about glitches that are just like, "LOL, look how weird the game behaves after this glitch." But you actually take the time to understand the glitches and explain why they happen. I appreciate that. You get my star of approval, a check plus, and an A for 'Outstanding'
Xondak Thanks dude, really appreciate that. It's always interesting to know why these glitches occur rather than just the strange ways they look.
***** lol
“A for ‘Outstanding’”
5:07 Insert Green Hill Zone Theme here
Gonna be honest here, I listened to it 5 times and I still have no idea what you said in the last glitch.
Luz Celeste I don't think Andy knows what he said either. It sounds pretty obvious that he's just saying what the glitch-finders wrote. I certainly couldn't put it in easier words.
Luz Celeste What's hard to understand? You perform certain specific actions which write certain addresses to the game's memory. You them perform a specific glitch which causes the game to try and read that re-written memory. The re-written memory was re-written with specific code that tells the game to load the ending cutscene.
It's similar to the more recently found Credits warp for Mario World on SNES.
+TXF Not everyone is a smart arse like you.
crushbeast29 I was explaining the glitch? How does that make me a smart ass?
Fenrir the Rrowdy I'm not into technical jargon really either..that's why I assumed it was fairly easy to understand. I wasn't trying to be condescending. I just honestly figured it wasn't hard to get. Certain moves in the game change certain parts of the code. A specific action activates the code. The code causes a thing to happen. Simple enough.
"He's not coming back is he" haha love it when you say that
Reminds me of my dad

This was the first ever Son of a Glitch video I ever watched. I remember being 8 and mentioning it to my parents, who unsurprisingly weren't happy with the name. Thanks for the memories A+Start!
"unsurprisingly weren't happy with the name"
lol it didnt contain a actual swear word plus imagine if she heard today he is verified by youtube itself
@@erroroliver I actually don't even think they ever knew the channel. I think I used "Son of a Glitch" as a phrase and they assumed I was being subtle with cursing.

Me: **Looks at World Number**
Game: **Shows World 3**
Me: I Know, it's hard to Talk.
Optional: Bet your friends that you can beat Super Mario Bros. 3 within 10 minutes.
1. Beat 1-1 and 1-2.
2. Get the whistles in 1-3 and the castle.
3. Use a whistle and enter world 2.
4. Use a whistle and enter world 7.
5. Perform the 7-1 glitch.
Optional: Win money.
Step 5 is basically TAS-only, and I'm not even sure about the "basically." It would take thousands of tries (no exaggeration) to get it correct as a normal player, and considering that if you mess up it has the potential to crash the game or the like... yeah.
TheGigaBrain This trick was done live at Awesome Games Done Quick 2015, iirc. I'd wager it's possible, just that it takes a *lot* of practice and research, like most speedrunning tricks.
iankeith Actually, I saw a video of that being performed in real time after I posted that comment :) I guess this will have to be an occasion where I admit that I was wrong.
TheGigaBrain Cool as hell to see though, isn't it? People have been doing a lot of research into doing these in a lot of games; it's been done somewhat in DKC and other games more and more often now.
iankeith Yeah, these kinds of glitches are always cool to see. You do seemingly random stuff at a fast pace, and the next thing you know, you're at the credits.
Loving these. I remember my neighbour showing me the easy bowser back in 90 and couldn't belive he found something like that.
That final glitch in one sentence: By placing enemies in specific locations and using the glitch pipe entrance, Mario is sent to RAM and from there, he can manipulate the code and trigger the ending cutscene.
mario achieves apotheosis
5:18 is an engine bug that exists in mario 1, mario 2 jp and mario 3. Spawning a mushroom will kill a vine growing, since only 1 item is possible to spawn. The vine stop in Mario 3 is only possible in that stage. The item spawned doesn't matter.
But Mario 3 can support multiple items on screen. There are big question blocks that spawn 3 1ups at once. But they somehow managed to overlook the overwriting of powerups 😢
@@IrisGalaxis At the same time. I guess I wasn't clear about that back then. The 3 1ups spawn in a row, not at the same time. If 2 items try to spawn at the same time the second item deletes the first, which includes vines growing, but once it's out it's fine. The vines that were already made don't get deleted but it's cut off early however
@@Shikaku2the example shown in this video are also in a row, not at the same time. He hits a 1up block, the mushroom spawns. Then he hits the next one, that one spawns and the first mushroom despawns. Why doesn't that happen with the giant question block 1-ups?
That last glitch reminds me of the matrix. When he ends up in the final room, peach is crying because she's realized her real world was a lie and they are now in the real world (inside a video game but whatever).
5:20 looks to be because the vine counts as a powerup, and spawning a second powerup makes it disappear. Note how it vanished with the flower's arrival.
6:24 Bowser: (breathes heavily)
Mario: Umm...
Mario: eat a mint please!
The glitch with disappearing 1UP mushrooms is very odd when you consider that there's at least a couple giant "?" boxes in the game which release three 1UP mushrooms all at the same time, granted, they're in rooms with no enemies or such, so perhaps it's using sprite space which normally would be reserved for enemies? :o
***** That, or they might be using sprite space normally used by enemies, since there's no enemies on the same screens as multiple 1ups. ;)
@@Pixelmusement I can almost hear your teeth grind as you weepily attempt to cling to your original assertion
+Mega Zeta I'm sure the TASers have this figured out for sure, but I'm not a part of that scene so I have no idea where to go to check that info. :/
That's true, I never realized that

what an absolute throwback of a video. I remember watching all of these in middle school... graduating with my bachelor's this year ! o_0 !!
How did I never know there were so many cool glitches in this game? I played countless hours of it and never ran into any of them.
In going into this episode, I knew a few, but it was a longer list than I ever imagined :)
I'm going to have to hook up my NES and try some out.
For those of you looking to do no-fire bowser in the Virtual Console version, that's been fixed in that iteration! Also, the pit will be narrower, making the fight harder.
Thanks for that last one. My brain hurts. :(
Yeah, me too haha. Plus try saying everything I say in that section in one take, and you'll get another headache :)
A+Start that last glitch: could you please explain how to do it one more time? I'm REALLY confused...
ecwcwwf TASvideos.org explains it 10x better; the game has to do something. but what? the instructions are located at a certain place, which is changed when Mario goes too far below the level. such is located at the x-position and sprite slots of the enemies. by manipulating them, they execute things using controller inputs. the controller inputs basically say "go to credits", so that's what the game does.
Not for me
The code is "JSR to i forget the address of the end credits"
That last glitch .... holy Moses
3:42 the paragoomba had a heart attack
Final glitch for the nerdy:
This trick involves the pipe end trick glitch that takes you out of bounds where a glitch tile and enemy x-positions are used to execute arbitrary code to skip straight to the ending.
Touching an invisible glitch tile makes the processor tries to update memory outside of the normal tile data at an address that reprograms how the processor interprets adresses.
This causes executions to jump to an un-intended area of the ROM and execute incorrect instructions.
Eventually the stack overflows and it starts executing RAM instructions beginning at a certain address which is just before the location of the player's and enemies' x-values.
To get to the ending, three consecutive x-values are needed which come from the enemies on screen and their x-positions.
By having these values and then using the pipe glitch in this way, Mario is taken out of bounds and then eventually to the end of the game, skipping the entirety of world 8.
That's pretty mind blowing!
5:05 Mario is like.. "Fuck it, let me do it Sonic style". Lol
Da Gray Wolf
Da Gray Wolf
Here's a fun fact- in the bowser fight Nintendo forgot to program a hitbox in his body. His hitbox is actually in his head. So if you duck while bowser does a stomp attack and he won't hurt you.
Yeah.
Funnly enough, this glitch was documented on a Japanese manganize...
It's been fixed in the GBA version of this

Russell Wallace it's complicated haha
Russell Wallace It's so simple!
It involves the pipe entry glitch that takes you out of bounds where a glitched tile and enemy x positions are used to execute arbitrary code to jump straight to the ending, touching an invisible glitched tile makes the processor try to update memory outside the normal tile data at an address that reprograms how the processor interprets addresses, this causes execution to jump to an unintended area of the ROM and execute incorrect instructions, eventually the stack overflows and it starts executing RAM instructions beginning at a certain address which is just before the location of the player and enemy's x values, to get to the ending three consecutive x values are needed which come from the enemies on screen and their x positions, by having these values and then using the pipe in this way, mario is taken out of bounds and eventually to the end of the game skipping the entirety of world 8. Lol, This is meant to be a joke, I know it's not that simple too, I just copied that part's script word for word, and I actually didn't copy it, I wrote this whole thing instead of copying and pasting, why? I'm CRAZY, or, am I??
These glitches would have made me a hero back in the day as I was actually around when these games first came out and glitching was basically unheard of and no one thought possible.

i just found a glitch: I had flower power, then I jumped under 2 flying goombas, lost my power, then went up in the air higher than usual

Something that's happened to me before is that in the very first level if you score so many points and check your item box after completing the level you will have 3 rows worth of p-wings. It happened about 2 or 3 times and it quit doing it.
i did a glitch where i shot the king with a fireball(during the cutscene when you have no control over Mario, wtf?) at the end of world 3. the fireball hit him, and made a noise, but didn't hurt him or anything. but his body had slight screen tear for a second when it hit. it was the switch nes online version, i recorded it
At the start of every Castle, you have 2 frames (Or just 1 if the previous level was you beating a fortress...) when Mario spawns where you can either jump or shoot a fireball.

@@IvanFranco120 Go for it, not too hard to do =).
I recently found a circuit board of this game lying around in my garage. It works flawlessly (although it's a little difficult to boot) if put on a cart. A nice find! :D
That dreaded wide screen...
Its an old NES screen resolution, instead using the original with the black bars...
The music choice for the last glitch makes it look like a Creepypasta moment. Awesome exploit though!
On the last one I was like what???
+Dallas Pickens basically, the pipe glitch will tell the game to store the positions of the on screen enemies as the number of the room to load next. After the game somehow avoids crashing from the data dump after the pipe glitch, having the 2 shells in the pixel perfect position will execute the code to jump to the last run in the game. It may be possible that any number higher than the last room will still load the last room, making this way more easy to perform than it sounds. I'm still confused how the game would read enemy location data stored in the RAM and store that data in the room code somewhere else in the RAM as a result of the pipe glitch. That must mean that the pipe glitch REALLY breaks the game, and they probably don't even know how bad yet.
2:34 Piranha Plant: WTF
This is my favorite game of all time. I didn't know about the glitches but knew about the cheats.
Ive found a glitch in sonic forces classic sonic in level 10 there where C.sonic falls through the floor and most way down he will look forward as if you are M.sonic and your character start of the level view 😄

Hey man, Star Fox 64 and Kirby 64 have glitches?
***** every game has glitches except for Cave Story (not Cave Story 3D)
Can you please not stretch 4:3 game footage to fill the 16:9 frame? I understand the temptation, but everything just looks fat and weird.
That's my only gripe. Besides this, amazing episode! My favourite UA-cam series, by far!
Usually i would agree with you, but to be honest, I would rather have it like this than in previous episodes where most of the screen is static and not used. This is just showcasing a game also, with actual gameplay, I'd post in the ratio it was made to be viewed at. Funnily enough NES games are actually closer to 1:1 ratio.
Understandable, and it's your show. I'm still going to watch, regardless!
Thank.you for making a very cool video!
I don't know if anyone mentioned it before, but if you enter a stage with a p-wing and collect a tanuki suit, your turn into a tanuki Mario who can still fly indefinitely until the end of the stage! I found that glitch when I was a kid.

Is the arbitrary code execution at the end possible on an actual copy of the game? It looks and sounds so complicated, I'm willing to believe it's impossible to do so outside of properly hacking a ROM.
No, you can do it on a normal NES
ShadowSilver1991 Yes. In fact, look up a video about it being done on SMW. Someone (I forget his name) can do it without the use of TAS or anything.
Doctor Who? Sethbling can, along with some other people though. You can do it on the first stage of the game, but it is much more complex in SMW, and takes 4:00 usually

They study the way the game works and manipulate the code via certain actions, it's called "arbitrary code execution".
Ayy Lmao Y U KILL PEOPLE IN AGARIO
1:49 this glitch occurs because water is bg layer, and Mario is behind all layers, meaning when he goes underwater, we can't see him.
If you do the same glitch, but won't enter the pipe with water, just stay long enough in areas without bg elements and glitch will be corrected.
The Bowser who doesn't shoot fire is NOT a glitch, that was programmed intentionally as a reward in case you get to the end of the game with a P-Wing.
