Great video content! Excuse me for the intrusion, I am interested in your opinion. Have you researched - Honenry Hiycarlett Principle (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is a smashing exclusive guide for stopping eczema minus the headache. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my friend Sam at very last got astronomical results with it.
I've taken to slapping my itches. It still dulls the itchiness with pain like scratching, but without the risk of breaking the skin from scratching too hard when it starts getting REALLY itchy. Although it is much more noticeable by other people when you're randomly slapping a bite on your arm.
Since I was a kid, I've found that digging my nail directly into the skin where it itches for a few seconds tends to alleviate the itch (raking the nail over the surface doesn't do much). This might be because it breaks up histimine built up under the skin. Also, I've found that when I have a severe itch, it's usually because of a buildup of dead skin in a particular area. So, if I carefully use my nail to scrape all of the dead skin away, it typically gets rid of the itch completely..
I have Eczema, and I completely agree with these coping mechanisms. When I stab my skin with my nails, I find my itching is easier to alleviate than if I would take my skin. Plus, dead skin’s especially itchy with the condition, so showering is particularly crucial every night to get rid of it.
Histamines are the body’s response to an allergen etc. So an anti-histamine prevents the release of the chemical and therefor the symptoms you get (itchy, red skin, sneezing etc)
Basophils are granulocytes that contain histamine. Mast cells are a type of basophil that resides in the tissues. Antihistamines are antagonists to histamine. Boom. No video needed.
This may sound weird but I find rubbing the affected area with an ice cube helpful. Give the cold will dull the itch response and the water may wash away surface irritants, also if like a bug bite can reduce swelling and at least appear to reduce an associated rash (though that illusory on my part).
@InThisTogether Hey buddy, don't do that! Hot temperatures may give a few seconds' relief due to the pain response, but it will significantly worsen your itch, as it exacerbates your body's inflammation response. It also strips oils, making your skin dryer and more itchy. PhyroFox1 has the right idea; cool temperatures will dull the inflammation response and can also help numb the sensation.
Who hate when you get it itch on your back that can't be reach. and start looking for any object with a long extension to scratch it with or asking someone to scratch it for you or rub your back against something with rough edges.
Thank you for posting. I have chronic hive, and found this information to be very helpful. It's instinctual to scratch when something itches, but I know first had it makes it worse.
The narrator said . . . "Disrupting this conversation between serotonin and GRPR can stop the itching almost entirely." *then changed the subject* HOW THE HELL DO WE DO THAT
yeah, that one with the hot water is the only option to stop a strong itch cycle without damaging the tissue. it's kinda hard to get the temperature right sometimes though. sometimes Menovasinum (Benzocaine + Procaine + Racementhol) can also help if it comes back after a while.
I had great resuilts with crucifiying (makling a cross with your nails on the sting (pretty deep but not that you're bleeding)) moscito stings. I guess the pain lasts so long that the itiching doesn't return(it doesn't hurt that bad.) :)
My nephew has eczema too and it’s been hard for him to deal with so much itchiness and he would often scratch only to be scolded not to do so. 🙏🏽 it’s gotten a lot better though and I’m really relieved he doesn’t have to deal with the severity of the itching sensation. 🙏🏽 bless anyone who’s having to deal with itchiness for any and all causes. 🙏🏽 I do not wish it even on my worst enemy.
What I personally experience whenever I don't scratch myself where the mosquito bit me is a very interesting sensation. It actually feels good and the itch goes away quicker than when you scratch yourself.
My chronic itch under my shoulder blades can be extreme…..I scratch my back hard sometimes w hard brushes, knives, back scratchers, and my husband (he’s the best back scratching). My heart goes out to people w constant itch. It’s brutal!
Yeah, I scratched my arm during this. Lotion helps a lot with itching (mainly on the feet, legs, and arms), along with other beauty products that remove dead skin and/or moisturize, because my itching mainly comes from dry skin, but there's nothing like a back scratcher when you can't reach a painful itch on your back. Few simple pleasures beat that. Screw ignoring it. Simply doing nothing is more painful than any pain scratching brings.
Idk, scratching for me does remove the itchy feeling, not only temporarily. so it doesn't make things worse, though sometimes I do scratch myself to hard on places that don't have many pain receptors(like legs) causing it to bleed. Often I notice the blood to late, only to see my hand/leg covered in it.
This is very interesting! and it confirms the purpose of the act of scratching. Ok lets think of a moment why we scratch in the first place. There are two causes of an itch that I find are more common in the wild than insect bites: irritant plant hair and a dirty butt; both if left untouched will cause severe irritation. the act of scratching works very well to clean out both cases. the scraping motion of the nails can scape out the dry fecal matter with ease and it can pull out the microscopic poisonous darts from the plant hair off the skin. The mechanism explained in this video serves as a feedback loop. the release of serotonin only sensitizes more the itch receptors but does not reactivate them. the itch simply wont stop until the whole area is cleaned and the feedback loop makes sure of that. It seems that itching and scratching is simply a cleaning mechanism that just happens to be activated by insect bites.
Two alternatives that help, AND does not cause the cycle: 1. Gently rub the general area with the palm of your hand. It "scratches" but does not cause pain. 2. Scrath around the bite without touching it. It feels as if you scratched, but again, does not cause reaction to pain.
So if pain over rides itching, I don’t have to scratch the actual mosquito bite? Like I could scratch my arm when the bite is on my leg and the pain will still over ride the itch sensation??
My experience is that a very effective way of stopping the itch after a mosquito bite is a moderately wet washcloth, heated to be almost-too-hot in a microwave, and gently applying it to the skin (at a nearly painful temperature), for about 10-20 seconds. I'm not sure why it works so well (itch goes completely away), but speculate that the irritation could be due to proteins changed by the hot cloth.
There are some conditions that make people feel itchy and scratching actually makes you feel pain. I have lichen planus, a skin condition, it's autoimmune (which means there is no cure) where I get red itchy spots on my skin, mostly arms and legs and they itch, a lot, but if I scratch I feel pain so I resist. For mosquito bites there are some creams that relieve the itch, I heard that putting ice on the bite also helps with the itch.
If you’re looking for an itch relief (depending on what country you live in), you may have to see a doctor, but I’ve also found that consistently using a moisturiser (one that actually works lol) can stop the itch before it starts! Hope this can help, all the best
I guess this may also explain why the SNRIs prescribed to manage the allodynia of Fibromyalgia Syndrome often also relieve the chronic skin itching that a lot of us Fibromyalgia patients experience.
The solution I came up as a kid was biting the afflicted rather than scratching it. It worked really well against the urge and dulling the itch sensation, while not causing as much damage I guess

(My speculation) Probably as we were(and still are) a social and tribal society to warn other people of potential irritants around the area

Yep, like contagious yawning. If your cavemate has lice you probably do to.
