That shot of Gundam Aerial absolutely *barrelling* into frame as Suletta steps up, never fails to mess me up every single time. The animation and VFX on it is so fucking lush, it's insane
Suletta also takes 2 steps forward.
Its beautiful
This single shot is so LOADED too; how much of a shadow Aeriel casts on Suletta, that all around it is desolation and war but Suletta still looks upon it like a sister after everything its done. Just how much it dwarfs her is so symbolic of how much more value their mother places on a literal weapon over flesh and blood.

And as Suletta is stepping forward you can see how much care was put into animating the gust of wind, and the weight it has against her body, matched with her expression; the detail in this OP is amazing
This is the kind of lyrical synergistic talk that makes me love other Gundam fans wherever and whoever you are.
There's so much joy and innocence, yet it still carries that weight of guilt, hatred and more behind the music. That's how I feel about this opening.
Suletta has killed a man and Earth House has witnessed real combat. There is no going back to how things used to be.

Suletta and Miorine are shown in different frames, foreshadowing their parting ways.
Quiet Zero appears on the title screen for a second.
Sophie and Norea disappear in the distance, foreshadowing their deaths.
Suletta looks at the Aerial flying away, foreshadowing that she would lose it.
If it follows the same trend as season 1, I'm guessing that we will soon get a new version where Suletta flying the Aerial will be replaced with her new Gundam, the "Calibarn".

Guel went from being my least favorite characters to my favorite instantly. He's Jerrid 2.0 but done with far more sympathy.
I mean he's Jerrid 2.0 if he wasn't evil and none of it was his fault lol
I remember the Reddit went ”must protecc ” over Guel. So far I really love the writing seriously blurring the identity of “good” and “bad” people
I don't think he's supposed to be based on Jerrid. Given the Revolutionary Girl Utena story, character & thematic parallels, I'm pretty sure he's supposed to be an analogue for Kyouichi Saionji. Both characters are introduced as obnoxious, possessive jerkasses providing unwanted attention to the main character's future love interest, which causes the main heroine to intervene and end up in a duel with said jerkass. The main heroine ultimately emerges victorious and is then surprised that they end up 'engaged' to the girl they helped out, who in turn is revealed to be prize of a dueling system waged within the school. Meanwhile jerkass stubbornly refuses to give up & tries to redeem his honor but instead ends up getting repeatedly humiliated and ultimately expelled from the school. Its during their time of expulsion that jerkass undergoes character development and ends up turning out to be a much more complex character than what they initially appear.
I should also point out that the writer for series, Ichirō Ōkouchi, actually got his start writing the light novel adaptions of Revolutionary Girl Utena, long before he hit it big with Code Geass, so the parallels are almost certainly deliberate rather than coincidental.

Guel has slowly become my favorite character in the series. Ibreally like how his character develops
I freaking love this opening. The Blessing fit the original vibe of the show, seemingly being a silly Mecha anime with space lesbians and cool robots. The theme kept this guise by being largely upbeat in tone. Then of course, we get hit with reality. Elan and his look-alikes. Prospera being devious. The conflicts on Earth. Shaddiq's betrayal. And the icing on the cake: Plant Quetta. That's where Slash comes in. The kiddie games and cute stuff is over. Reality is hitting these kids, and it's hitting hard. It's another thing WFM shares with Evangelion (at least, in my opinion) A Cruel Angel's Thesis sounds deceptively upbeat, but the lyrics are somewhat melancholy in tone, questioning life and God. Who knows? Suletta herself might end up in Shinji's shoes and have to determine the fate of humanity.
This is true, until you go deeper into the first opening, The Blessing. And I mean by getting into the lyrics itself. What WFM does well that not a lot of anime do these days is that it tells its story vividly outside of the actual anime through its music and other media. Of course, you can understand the story well without diving deep into the music, but the music gives the audience a deeper understanding of the story.
YOASOBI gives us a gift by giving us an official English version of The Blessing. It is also confirmed in the official music video that the video and the song itself is based on a short Prologue story called Cradle Planet. Both the story and the song is told through the point of view of Ericht (Eri) Samaya. And it definitely hits different when you consider the recent episode.
Below I'm going to go deeper into it (SPOILERS FOR THE WITCH FROM MERCURY)
Eri looks after Suletta and treats her like Suletta is her little sister. Cradle Planet goes into details how Eri saw Suletta grow up in the MS, the story goes all the way until Suletta is about to be enrolled in the school. It even gives us a scene where Suletta actually teaches Eri a lesson about not running away. (which I mention because of an important piece of the song) It also goes into details, in the end, how Prospera is actually sending Suletta to the school as part of her revenge plot and Eri wants Suletta to not be part of it at all, but at the time she does not defy Prospera. Thats pretty much Cradle Planet.
The song itself does a really good job bringing Eri's emotions and feelings and thoughts from Cradle Planet into lyrics. It talks about how, more than anything, Eri wants Suletta to be free. She wants Suletta to take on life that is not determined by someone else other than Suletta (this greatly hints at Prospera's control). She wants Suletta to run her own life and determine for herself where she will go (Cue the lyrics "It's your life, your story, your way"). Eri remembers Suletta really depending on Eri for support (cue the lyrics "As to scoot, holing up as you ran up to me. So, you climbed up in the cockpit and stayed inside". One of the few things that was directly from Cradle Planet). But Eri acknowledges that Suletta, over time, is not the same girl always crying in her cockpit. ("Before I realized, you grew up to be powerful").
Eri pretty much gives Suletta her blessing to take on life without depending on her. Until Suletta takes that step, Eri swears to be by her side. Which takes us into Episode 18.
Episode 18 (Season 2, Episode 6) has Eri pretty much saying "time is up". Going back to Cradle Planet, Eri never wanted Suletta to be part of Prospera's revenge. She wanted Suletta to be free and have control of her own life, as greatly depicted in both the story and the song The Blessing. Eri only mutually agreed to let Suletta go to school because Suletta always wanted to go to school. In Episode 19, Eri decides to rip the bandaid and tries to force Suletta to stop depending on her or Prospera. That it was time to let Suletta free, that Suletta should no longer be apart of Prospera's revenge plot. We will see on Sunday (and the episodes aftterwards) if Eri is successful

It's actually still very much in line with Utena thematically, characters and story. Even timing and tonal shift as our two leads get closer.

I'm actually glad that it has nothing to do with Evangelion becauae people praise Evangelion as if it was the best mecha anime ever, when in reality it is NOT. It's a ahow with symbolims that mean nothing to the series with a protagonist that never grows.

This opening does an amazing job at conveying their emotions and state of minds going forward, as well as a bit of hope in that smile Miorine gives Suletta at the end.

Is it a war crime that I liked this song more than the first opening? The lyrics keeps getting heavy and heavier in each episode you watch this season.
I started to like this opening a lot more.
Yoasobi's Shukufuku represents the Slice of Life of the first season, while Slash is more Gundam-feeling
1:09 Amazing how on this part during Episode 23, Ariel changes into Calibarn. And she actually experiences the Permet score skin damage.
Man seeing Guel in this opening is just making him more and more my favorite character. He looks lost and discouraged yet he continues moving forward trying to find his path.
For me Guel is the best male character in this show

WFM OP and ED (1st and 2nd season) is probably the most contextual among all other Gundam Series.. every scene and even lyric are hint on what gonna happen in the series or what happen in the past..
Season 2's Opening and Ending Songs are some of the best Anime bangers, bar none.
Aeriel rising up through the smoke as the chorus drops is amazing but my favorite part would be the second half of the chorus. When it shows Aeriel Rebuild vs Ur and Thorn into Pharact moving forward. The build up from Michaelis, Darilblade, and Aeriel getting their own beat makes for an amzing image. Like each reaching out towards you.
I love this OP. Season 2 is shaping up to be amazing

After Eps 19, the opening started making sense
Honestly, when i started watching it I didnt expect much. But this Anime Slaps!

i was a bit surprised that sophie appears here despite dying just 2 episodes into the season
but the more i watched the more it hit me, how theyre just sophie and norea not as killing machines, but as people having a normal day on earth, as *friends*
and it hit even more after noreas breakdown over losing sophie, how she truly was the only thing left in the world that she deeply cared about, how now shes nothing more than an empty vessel full of grief and rage
and even after noreas death, this scene is still there, two girls that no longer impact the plot and who arent even portrayed doing anything too important. and yet, it hits *hard.* harder every time.
these two deserved so much better, they deserved a world that would let them be instead of robbing them of all they ever loved. the scene is just a few seconds long, but it stills feels like a punch in the gut every time i see it. one of the saddest stories in the entire show

The opening encapsulates the story perfectly.
It's kinda sad that suletta despite being the main character, is almost actually just a bridge between almost every key characters to eri / aerial
With only probably miorine, guel and the earthian house being the exception

After Watching the latest episode of Witch From Mercury I unknowingly realized that the ending of the series might have been right in front of our faces the entire time. Season 2's opening theme has a lot of foreshadowing.
From Aerial's abandonment of Sulleta, the destruction of their school (0:47) and the Quite Zero (0:13) to Eri being the final boss of the series (1:09)

The first time I heard this theme I thought it was just alright, but over the course of the season it really, really grew on me. This is a prime example of why I make a point of always watching the intro/outros for shows, because if I had only heard this the one time and skipped it for the rest of the season, I wouldn't be here months later jamming out to the theme song.
It also helps that the animation from 0:45 to 0:49 is sick as hell.

This is the first show that successfully makes me care about or have a clear impression of ALL the characters. I expected to hate Elan #5, but find myself loving his strong attachment to life and refusal to be a tragic victim of circumstance. Guel started off as an asshole but became so much more complicated after his apology to Miorine, and clearly he inspires a lot of loyalty from his friends and brother so I hope he gets a comeback and gets stronger without going to the dark side. And Lauda! Seems like a quiet type who'd be scheming to usurp power, but it turns out he's all about supporting his adoptive family. Even Shaddiq, I suspect, has some heartbreaking motive that might justify his cruelty, given how committed the girls are to helping him (and why just girls?) Suletta is actually the weak link as a character for being quite brainwashed by her Mom, but she's still compelling because of the contrast between her combat power and psychological issues. Kudos to all involved.

@@Peasham People are attracted to characters with a will and mind of their own; even Nika, in her weak and effectively under-control position, is fighting for her ideals and getting her ass kicked for her beliefs. Suletta has sort of kind of started to question her mom, but it's going very slowly. Don't get me wrong, Suletta is compelling, but she abandons her own thoughts and submits to her mom too easily right now, and people who are under someone's control are not as intriguing no matter how strong they are in combat. It would be nice to see her rebel.
@@tokitobe2450 I can't describe to you the amount of brainwashed characters who people adore more than non-brainwashed characters, you have no idea what you're talking about. Not to mention, most actions she took she STILL took of her own free will, using the brainwashing phrase by herself to motivate herself into doing things, I've never seen that in media in general prior, and a character whose brainwashing is mostly used by herself to help others is nothing I'd describe as a "weak link".
Not to mention, it's glaringly obvious Mio and Aerial are gonna help Suletta break her brainwashing, this is both spelled out in the English version of the first opening song and obvious considering Mio basically loves Suletta and very much knows that she's brainwashed by Prospera.

@@di-gun5791 I like Elan 5. He's doggedly determined to live, which is a healthier attitude than Elan4 and Norea, which was more like "coping with a crappy existence". Have to say I don't really get how Suletta can be a viable romantic interest for Mio at this point -- she's emotionally like age 10. Any groom/bride who is blindly obedient to their Mom isn't ready to partner with anybody so I hope they help her grow really fast. I feel sympathy for Suletta but she's demonstrated very little growth compared to the other characters, even Chuchu.
