What Is An Engine Starter Motor?
An engine starter motor is an electrical device that is used to rotate (crank) internal combustion engines so as to initiate the engine’s operation under its own power. As soon as the engine begins to run, it gets disconnected from the engine, which now relies on the combustion process. The component is mounted on the engine’s gearbox housing, and the starter motor gear meets the flywheel’s teeth.
In this episode, we discussed the following:
    1. Parts of the Starter Motor
    2. Types of Starter Motor
    3. Common Starter Motor Faults
    4. How to Prevent Starter Motor Problems

On common starter faults . 6, slow cranking , what problem may it indicate ?

I would like to add that the solenoid has 2 coils. A Pull in and a Hold in coil. The Pull in coil grounds through the motor and the hold in coil grounds straight to earth. When you first crank the starter both coils are activated and the power going through the pull in coil is enough to turn the motor slightly so it engages better as it enter the flywheel. Once the solenoid has pushed the starter into gear the contact by passes the pull in coil and it`s just the hold in coil holding the solenoid in place. This saves the solenoid burning out. This is why if the holding coil is open circuit it will make a clicking noise like a flat battery. It`s very rare but if you jump the car and it`s still clicking then that`s the fault.
