I tried formula vee nearly 40 years ago in a scarab the late Stuart Rolt built for me. Brands Hatch was an ambition for me and my position in the race and my view of events was very much like this. My career was very brief due to external factors but I can tell my grandchildren that I raced at Brands Hatch. Thank you for this video. I remember now how scared I was!
I have one of Andy's later cars, the Scarab Mk5. I crashed it heavily a Silverstone a couple of years ago, but I plan to start rebuilding it this winter...
This series looks like a lot of fun! There's a few moments such as 3:10, into druids and graham hill, where you are compromising your line looking up the inside for a move that isn't on, better to keep to a traditional line and stay closer for the following corners. You do it 2 laps later into surtees which is particularly harmful as you then aren't as close for the slipstream down the main straight. Not hating or anything just offering some advice. Best of luck with the racing bro!
I thought Druids was my best chance of overtaking as I felt I was fairly good on the brakes so probably got sucked into trying it too often. I might have been better looking for opportunities at other corners. Thanks for the feedback 😁
Curious: since these cars must be quite draggy, wouldn’t it be better to be in the slipstream as much as possible? Most of the time you left the slipstream quite early and you can immediately see your speed decrease as your car battles to punch through the air. What made you take that line? I’m not very familiar with Formula Vee so I could be missing something. Lovely videos always, amazing telemetry.
@@andiminthegarage7081 your life, your car, mate. I'm sure it's really scary when you do it. Your tire management and corner exits and so on are superb, you really have tons of grip, so obviously you're very good. Just something that caught my attention and I thought I'd ask. Thank you for the reply.

Hi there. Great video. Congrats on the great result. Can you tell me please what camera you are using? Also is there a special configuration and/or app you are using to have so many information on the screen? Thank you so much. Best regards from Brazil.
The camera is GoPro Hero 7 Black and the data is an app called RaceChrono Pro (on Apple amd Androod) on my phone, linked to a Garmin Glo GPS module for better accuracy. It gives some great data. You download the GoPro footage to the app, and this is the result 😁😁
This was awesome. How much effect does slipstream have on these cars? I saw that you left the trailing earlier than I expected, but I have also never driven these before so I became curious. Great content. 😄
By inside, I assume you mean the shallower line. In theory a wide entry, turning in at the service road is the quickest line, but my confidence in the car wasn't great, having had a few offs at that corner in previous races, which probably made it look slower than it should have been. 😂😂
From around 2:35, when you catched up to that car ahead, was it the dirty air or any other reasons that you didn't follow the slipstream from that guy? I saw you left the slipstream quite premature so I am curious
Looks like they tried to go wide into turn 1 and do the switchback underneath the car in front so they'd have the inside for turn 2, but didn't carry enough speed at the apex compared to the previous lap.
As @mboothy said, as you can see from my speed delta, I made a lousy job of keeping the speed up around Paddock, despite the good slipstream down the straight. If I had, I might have had a chance up the inside a Druids.
I don’t know very much about racing, so I’m wondering, what do you think about drafting? It doesn’t seem like you always do this in the straights. Thanks for the video. The pov helps me learn proper racing lines. Cheers.
Yes drafting does play a crucial part in racing. Some sports more than others because particularly in bikes it works wonders but it doesn’t have much of the same effect in these cars by the looks of it. Theres also not much of a straight for the slipstream to be effective.
@@Nathan_Langdon It has a significant effect with these cars actually. OP was just understandably not super aggressive because these cars are a bitch to handle and you don't want to send it to hot in them on the corners because they will spin out very quick. It takes a lot of skill to drive these vees.

These _are_ fun, but if you want to give the driver in this video a couple hundred thousand dollars to fund years of racing in a higher league, they may well be eager to take you up on that. :)
You need to learn how to draft better because you pull off to soon and also need to learn how to pass on late braking. It takes you forever to overtake someone.
I agree. Feels like the driver is also diving turn 2 a lot like they are going for a pass even if no one is there. Take that outside line, get a good run out and you can gain a tenth or two maybe.
In my defence, it was the first race back after having to rebuild the front of the car after a heavy accident at Donington, so I was probably a little more hesitant than I might have been. Crash damage can be expensive, and as a self funded racer with a limited budget, I'd prefer not to have the expense...
