Good review. This was revolutionary for the early-mid 1980s. Crazy to think a whole generation has now grown up with excellent FM selectivity on most radios. 20+ years ago that was the exception. I find the tuning here to be a bit arduous. Not a fan of pressing AM or FM before pressing the frequency buttons. This was the first in a series that would ultimately culminate with the ICF SW7600GR.
We had this radio in the house when I was a kid in the 80s and 90s. It was a constant companion. I wonder what my parents ever did with it. I still listen to radio all the time and I’d love to have this one again.
I thought was a really useful insight iv been offerd 1 for 50 euro and im going to buy it now thanks to your efforts and to the person givn out about the shaking camera that wasnt nice if u didnt like dont watch .
I have the similar ICF-2003, which is the same as the ICF-7600DS and basically a palate swap of this one. One really annoying negative for me is the lack of a dial light. I wish Sony had spent the extra few cents to at least add an LED or something. It makes this a pain to use in a dark room. Something I noticed is that the sensitivity increases dramatically when you use a wall outlet or external battery bank with these radios, Sony must've cut back on the power to savebatteries when it runs on AAs, so keep an eye out for one if you intend to use this radio.
I'm pretty sure that the ICF-7600D was released about the same time as Sony released the ICF-2002 in the U.S. They're both identical since I had the ICF-2002.
From what I've seen this is correct. The ICF-2003 also seems to be identical to the ICF-7600DS, and the 2002/7600D and 2003/7600DS sets are identical to each other except that the latter has a darker color scheme.
Nice radio but not sure I could handle the tuning, it's really odd that sony would remove the traditional tuning encoder ? I had the Tecsun PL-990x, what a disaster on SSB, distortion and filters do not sound right and the 4 Khz filter does not work, same issues on the PL-880 and S-8800, it too until the PL-330 and H501x to fix the filters but there's still some distortion and while the filters sound a lot better there is a lot of bass cut off. I use ECSS a lot and I simply can't do it on a DSP radio, it sounds bad compared to the analogue radios.
I'm fine with having no encoders as long it doesn't mute while tuning lol. I also felt that the ssb is fine on the tecsuns but the sync detection on them is crap.
@@nyesslee SSB on the tecsuns is really bad in my opinion, with that distortion especially on stronger signals, makes ECSS impossible most of the time. The filters only improved on the PL-330 and H501x and on the H501x there is a bug where you have to cycle through the filters using the AM/BW button because using fine tune makes the filters sound muffled. DSP and SSB just doesn't work in my opinion, they'd be better off just going with SDR.
