It's a weird feeling as a truck driver because on paper you're making so much compared to others but the sacrifice you make is also significantly greater.
its cause you forget to subtract maintenance and divide the total revenue by the number of hours to realize you make less than an uber driver

A OTR Truck driver is present at thier assigned work station ( THE TRUCK ) 168 hours per week
A OTR truck driver can drive for 70 hours a week to earn piecemeal wages
Most truck drivers are never paid the trucking companies advertised Layover , Detention , Breakdown , Unloading pay
A OTR truck driver is present at work thier work station for a mandatory 10 unpaid hours a day rest break
During those 10 unpaid hours the OTR driver is still liable for maintence security of the Truck , APU, Trailer , Refer Unit , Customer Cargo
While the OTR driver can be fired for neglecting thier assigned unpaid responsibilities
The OTR driver's home , personal property and assets are unsecured , unprotected , unmaintained left to depreciate and degrade

In my first year, I had trouble every couple days or so with bad directions. These bigger companies use load boards that give lousy directions and sometimes don’t bother to update them. If your new, try to get a dedicated route.

Great video i'm excited to be joining the industry soon I'm on CDL A permit now knock on wood will have full CDL A with all endorsements. I already have School, Passenger and tanker (i currently drive school bus) the secret to managing 47 kids while safely operating a 35 ton bus is don't.

100%. If you’re making $70K a year and living off of $15K a year, the savings will compound very quickly.

If you're away from home in a truck but neither On Duty nor Driving, you're still 'working" because you're away from home because of your job. If a job takes you away from home, every minute away from home is because of your job and should be compensated. Here's an idea, compensate drivers at the prevailing rate when On Duty or Driving then also pay drivers the federal minimum wage for all other time they are away from home because of work.
I'm interested in going into this field. I'm currently a STEM teacher but want to take a different route. Kinda getting out of my shell and seeing where this takes me.

Another thing to consider is money saved on rent. If you're an OTR driver you can have your stuff in a storage and live in the truck and save $1000 a month on rent

If you're in it for the Long haul, treat investing like buying Gas. Buy only the good stuff. Buy regularly despite the price. And know over time it's sure to go up. Lol

the whole industry has to change. Don't go into long haul find something short haul. you can easily find a short haul route for 25plus per hour. Back in my uncles day long haul paid what owner ops make today and he was only a driver.

Exactly. I say this to truckers and they get defensive, and deflect by saying it’s a lifestyle choice and about not being stuck in an office. If you worked any job and did 60 hours you’d made $70,000 also because of overtime and time and a half.
@A.Gavency13 You also have truck drivers that make less than 40k. Do you know what the actual average and median salary is for a truck driver is? It’s not a lot. You can look that up yourself.
Now as far as non-trucker income, it would depend on a few factors like your location, skill set and education level. It sounds like you were describing dollar stores. Check this out.
Most truckers are going to work 60-70 hours a week. If hourly, the most they’ll usually see a hour is $20-25 a hour. If CPM, that’s even worse since you can only drive but so many miles a week with the max usually being 2000-2500 on a regular basis.
Let’s use your numbers though. Let’s say you make $15/hr and work 70 hours. That’s over $1200 a week and $60,000 due to time and a half. Any questions?
@A.Gavency13 You must not be a trucker. You do realize that truck drivers only make a lot of money because they work a lot of hours? That was the point of my original post.
If you work local, you’ll get paid by the hour. Let’s say a company like Sysco. They’ll pay you $26 a hour (varies by location but it’ll be less than $26). Do you know how hourly pay works? You take the hourly pay and double it. That tells you how much it is for a year if you work 40 hours a week for 50 weeks. Guess what? Your grand total is $52,000 a year.
So how do Sysco drivers make $80k, $100k? Because they work 12-14 hour shifts for 5/6 days a week and clock in 70 hours a week. Understand? If it wasn’t for the 30 hours of overtime, that same driver would only make $1000 a week before taxes.
Still following? Now if you don’t do local you’re going to be paid by the mile. The problem with this is it’s mathematically impossible to get more than 2000-2500 miles a week REGULARLY. Legally can only drive 11 hours a day, time spent at shipper, time spent at receiver, time spent chasing trailers, blah blah. Long story short, if you do 3000 miles a week, you’re probably going to get paid between $1200-1800 a week. You know how many hours you spent working to get it? 70 hours.
So again, back to my original point. You can make $70k or more at almost ANY job if you worked that many hours.

@@the_9th_power873 Honestly you can probably find local jobs paying more than that hourly but it depends on how much touch is involved. Also find out benefits and how many hours a week.
@@pacman4937 this ain't true, it's about experience. My last 2 jobs have been local, I made 37 an hour for 14 hour days at one, and currently average 40 and hour for 12 hour days at my current, both of these are hard labor jobs when I'm not I the truck, but it's all about getting there. Trucking is a GREAT job, but my advice is just don't let yourself stagnate.
Hi Gil, this is off the video subject, but I see you hire once on awhile. I'm a retiree and willing to give this business a shot by driving someone else's equipment. Preferably a no touch freight OTR on a sprinter van. What do you say. You seemed very experienced and great everyone fair and honest.

When you factor in a commute to and from your office, lunch hour, unpaid overtime (salary) - you’d be hard-pressed to find a desk job that doesn’t take 60 hours of your week away from your family

@@davidrobinson9528 that's why i came to the dance bby. 6 nights a week, 2-5 stops a night. super local so home on 34 and every other night or so. with a truck i'll make the same in 4.5 days after kicking 15% to equipment maintenance. i'm just saying the work is out here after 4-6 months if you can handle it and stay clean.
I made 109000 last year I work for a private carrier they also put me in a holiday inn when I'm overnight plus pay all my meals get a couple years of safe driving and u can get a job like this I love it never in a million years did I think I would get a job like this good luck my friends

More employees allow for company growth. Doesn’t necessarily mean he’s replacing employees that have quit… could just be he’s looking for growth
The workweek is the time I'm away from family, not sitting in a truck waiting.
Does your company have a training program? (If you do. Me and bro are wanting to join trucking as Team-Drivers.)
Also there are new truckers and ones that don’t want to move onto a better paying job that avg less than minimum wage. $10 an hour is not uncommon for an OTR driver at a mega carrier

General advice for you. First year is hard for everyone, second year onwards you’ll make a lot of money.
Make sure you drive safely, you’re on time, and don’t get tickets. If you do that, you’ll have no problem finding high paying jobs.
I more care how much money i save , not make. Saving is also making money.

Im a company Straight Truck Driver and I get paid the second I clock in until I clock out. I average about 40-52hrs a week out of those 2.5 are on duty but not paid (lunch)
How much do you take a week?
I make 85-95k as a shuttle driver and home every night for Sysco. I wouldn't deliver seeing how fast it burns people out.

XPO logistics 2020 $104,000 working 60-65 hours a week.
2021 $90,000 working 55 hours a week.
I quit to go to FedEx Freight. Better runs and equipment and they pay me more.
Benefits are very close in cost and quality.
Logistics companies in NYS paying 150k I’m studying for my permit hoping to get in with them that’s a lot of money.
I work for fedex as a package handler, they’re doing a program to help you get your cdl, im considering it.

@@nh0jay305 I was a FDX PH at the Ground division and got them to pay for my CDL through the tuition reimbursement program in 2021. Left them 9 months later and driving full time with a local trucking company, 95% no touch freight.
6 months experience hauling 40ft containers from Long Beach Ca ports to local warehouses.
I’m at 36/hr (promised a bump up to 38/hr after 6 months) from moment I get to the yard to moment I leave. Work M-F 4:30pm start time till 1:30am- 3:30am
4:30pm-2:30am on most days. It’s a comfortable livable wage here in LA and it’s easy work. Can’t complain but it’s still isn’t enough for me.

The hourly rates you are referring to, are you considering overtime or just diving income by hours worked?
Federal Law EXEMPTS companies from paying OTR drivers overtime. You need to take the total amount of money you make in a week and divide that by 85 hours. The reason you use 85 hours is that ANY regular job will pay OVERTIME but most trucking companies don't (nor are they required to under federal law). You are allowed to work 70 hours per week (under federal HOS laws) and will often do just that with loading and unloading.
For comparison, at minimum wage, you will make $616.25 per week on a 70-hour workweek. Thus a minimum wage job will make you almost $31K a year at the same hours worked as trucking. You should always use $31K for comparing a trucking salary to someone working at Mcdonald's.

The real benefits are the write off. Youll be paying 27 percent of that 2500 to the government . @200k all your expense is a write off. You can make the tax difference

Be careful locking yourself to 1 company which a contract. If you can, see if there are any state grants to go to truck school where your at. If not and it's your only way in, prime is a decent trading program, but you will be used and abused for their service.

I know drivers who make 146k a yr , 220k a yr and 246k a yr here in Canada and I clear 135K a yr as a rookie and only going up in pay next yr

So man if you don't mind could I ask some questions being as I'm considering CDl and was hoping to drive difficult routes up North? How do you get into those companies? Is that generally common? Can you just apply online and I guess fly up there? Are there other benefits? And how many hrs do you drive a day? And lastly is there time to stay physically fit or no?

wait.....i'm not truck driver, but everything I've been researching so far says almost or most of everyone drives 10 or 11 hours per day. how often do companies force people to drive 11 hours per day?
You mentioned the time waiting to get loaded or unloaded what you fail to mention is there’s a porta potty for a toilet, there is no shower, you can’t leave your truck yo go get groceries. It’s TIME you don’t get paid for that as a driver you’re still responsible to get paperwork, communicate with your DM, so just stop saying it’s time we as drivers get to read a book or chill to watch Netflix. When out on the road, and we do a 34 hr reset under load, as a driver we are still responsible for that load. We are never off and shippers, receivers and even our companies waste our time, run out our clocks because of mismanagement and the it’s the drive gets bent over when they look at their paychecks.
I don’t think I was disagreeing with that take. The whole message of the video was “hey drivers are not being paid properly for their time”.

You can only speak for yourself as to how much money you are willing to pay your drivers. It doesn't represent the general market or how much each individual driver makes in this industry of over 3 million drivers. I personally have been driving trucks for the last 5 years and I have never made less than 2500 a week as a company driver.
You’re absolutely right. One person doesn’t represent the entire market, which was the entire point of this video. I literally looked at market average and broke it down into how much that translates into hourly.

Well when you are waiting at the dock you are in the sleeper birth and not on duty. and if you're only making a 55 cents a mile that is true for new drivers I've been out here 37 years as a company driver now I make about $3 to $4 per mile but it's taken 30 years to get here. I'm part percentage, 35% and I gross approx. $10,000- $13,000 per week. So I'm taking home 3 to 3500.00 per week. But like I said it's taken 37 years to get here. You sure won't get rich the 1st 5 to 7 years you drive.

I also haul reefer with special contracts it depends on what you haul as well as to how much money you make flat bed double drop oversized has mat, all that stuff makes a big difference but again it's taken over 35 years to get here.... your company sounds like a great company and you do well by your drivers keep up the good work

I've got my own authority and had a fleet of 7 trucks and was not driving for a lot of years I got tired of the BS .I'm not finding good drivers and the cost of freight going down and the ownership going up, so sold everything and I've only been driving for a little bit of time as a company driver. The truck makes between 10 to 13000 per week and I make 3 to 3500 per week. I'm getting ready to retire and I've got the money I've made set aside.

I don’t think so no 😅. Finding a company with similar benefits + our compensation would be very unlikely, however, it’s not impossible. Many will claim they do, but I would recommend reading their customer reviews before making a decision!

A class A driver should be making $40/hr for a 40 hour work week with $60/hr for any overtime. This is what UPS drivers make, not to mention benefits. Anything less than $40/hr and you are getting royally screwed. don't let these capitalist pigs tell you anything different. All drivers should unite and elevate our standard of living. They can not replace us. EVER
