    First Paddy Podcast and I'm glad it was recommended! Rener is amazing. I have done BJJ since Spring of '18. I am a female who is obese. I have done MA in the past, but BJJ was a whole new experience. I'm a baby blue belt w/a few stripes (that I honestly think I only got because of my dedication) and I get my a$$ kicked every class, but dammmmmmmnnnn do I love it lolol. Since females don't do BJJ as much, I mainly roll with males 90% of the time. Dealing with people stronger than me helps me improve. I am not strong like a guy, but I use my head to stay calm and breathe.
    I've left class bleeding, concussed, crying but I always came back the next class. Try it, challenge yourself, and if you love it, you will stick with it as well!

Luckily, after a week I was all good again. 🥰

    One thing that isn’t mentioned often is that cities/departments have insurance which covers them against law suits. The premiums they pay are insanely high, and that is where a lot of the budget is allocated. If your officers are unable to de-escalate, they are a lawsuit waiting to happen. Unfortunately, many areas are so thinly spread that it’s entirely possible that no one will be on patrol if an officer actually trains on the clock.

As a LEO, I can tell you that money isn’t what’s stopping politicians. They have made rules in NY that have pretty much prohibited even using most BJJ techniques. It’s a long explanation but I’d love to explain and expose these people that block effective and necessary techniques , politicians that have 0 clue on what it takes.

I saw one where the suspect tried to run while drawing a gun but the police officer tackled him and got him in a rear naked choke hold with legs wrapped. UFC in the early 90’s use to allow groin shots, back of the neck strikes, stomps to your opponents and even soccer kicks to the face. All these other traditional MA’s claiming they can kill you if they are allowed these moves in a fight would not show up or didn’t make it in the UFC ring.

    I'm more training for self defense in a street fight, would jujitsu still be effective for that or for weapon disarming like if they have a knife? I mostly just work my striking and cardio, but am contemplating whether it's effective for a serious life or death situation.

    • @luisdawnfinder3188
      @luisdawnfinder3188 Рік тому +1

      Jiu Jitsu is extremely effective, though I'd say there's no martial art that *reliably* protects you in the case of someone pulling a weapon on you. Even the ones that train for it, you'd have to understand that you'd still likely get sliced up a bit (at best) with a knife, and if a gun is involved then the danger from that is obvious. In a self defense situation there's a lot of factors that will come into play regarding reliably defending yourself. If there are multiple attackers for example, you'll want to stay on your feet and strike in which case Boxing and Muay Thai are fantastic. That being said, for a one vs one scenario Jiu Jitsu really is the best. Plus if someone takes you to the ground then Boxing and Muay Thai won't save you, it will take grappling knowledge to escape and get back to your feet. There's no reliable way to defend yourself against an armed opponent except to avoid those situations, but being able to fight and reliably win in an unarmed fight I'd highly recommend finding an MMA gym that trains you in both Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai so that you'll have grappling and striking experience to be able to adapt to different situations. Even just 6 months of hard and consistent training in both and you'd be able to run circles around your average person. Good luck and hope this helps

      It depends. If the person has a weapon then no. If he has friends that might jump in then no. Pulling someone into your guard for their friend to just football kick you in the face from a standing position. Headbutts, striking and running are the three best option.

    • @tjl4688
      @tjl4688 Рік тому +1

      Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (the old school BJJ) was *designed* for no-rules fighting.
      However, all martial arts fail against knives. The best option is always to run, but GJJ does cover weapon defenses just in case.

    I have many martial arts styles under my belt. The number one form of martial art is Kuk Sool Won; hands down! It’s not well known in America but if you’re lucky enough to have a local dojo (such as in Webster, NY). It covers not only grappling but also striking (kicks and punches) to such a comprehensive level, it was MMA before there was ever MMA.
