Sennheiser e602 vs AKG D12 vs AKG D112 vs Shure Beta52 Custom

- With the exception of the Shure Beta52 Custom they are al in original condition. The AKG D12 had almost no low end, so the magnetic gap has been cleaned and sounds now like it should.
The Shure Beta52 was the Capsule beyond repair and so I replaced it with a one from Aliexpress, the capsule was so horrible bright that I hocked up a analog high cut. It still is really bright though, but at least it is usable again.
Straight up between the D12 and the D112 depending on the type of music.
Sometimes the typo of music calls for tho 602. Liebe Grüsse

Thank! I'm just getting into recording my own songs and need to learn about all these choices for sound quality.
All the best. Liebe Grüsse

So when you say magnetic gap in the D12, what do you mean exactly? I always wondered how exactly D12's are restored to get their low end back etc.
In this pic: i.ebayimg.com/images/g/LsgAAOSwyDFbH5mJ/s-l1600.jpg
it is the red circle. The magnetic field is the strongest there and collects metal debris over the years. If you clean that mostly the bass is back.

@@bennokaiser698 Oh okay! Thanks for the tip! I've always wanted one, but been apprehensive to get one knowing Id likely have to send it in somewhere, which isn't a bad idea, but I don't have a lot of cash, and want to be able to fix/repair my own gear when I can, so maybe I'll try find one. If it works good that would be great, but thanks for the tip, it'll be helpful.
One more thing. Do you know how to properly clean condenser capsules?
@@jamescassidy4045 You are very welcome. Cleaning a condenser capsule is generally a bad idea. You mostly destroy the coating or change the tension of the diaphragm. Blow on it causes the least damage and get mostly rid of the larger and heavier stuff. Liebe Grüsse Benno
The D12 has that "knock" sound that instantly evokes Bonham, it needs a bit of the mids pulled out or a smiley curve. B52 is the second best imo. Great vid! Wish there was the D12VR along with these.
The idea behind the placement is so all miks have somewhat the same signal. That's also why there is no additional EQ on them (except the built in). I sadly don't have a D12VR.

@@bennokaiser698 Of course! It's a great comparison!
@@ElmoSyr Thanks a lot!
I've done a similar comparison before but I used an e902 instead of the 602. I'd recommend the 9 series over the 6 for kick especially.
On the e902 the built in winter isn't as extrem as in the e602. So for me it depends what you are locking for. Liebe Grüsse

In this room, with this drummer, this drums and this groove, I think the D112 and the E602 are more efficient
Between the two, I would go for the D112 because of his tonal and low mid wood/cardboard (in the positive way) transcription of the bass drum. It's sound more documentary (sound + bleed)
The E602, sound more fiction, more proccessed to me (sound + bleed)
But if you want some fiction side on the D112, you can use some EQ, compression and transient shaper.
You just have more tonal material in bonus with the D112
Listen D112 1:34
Listen E602 0:34
There is no good answer, it's just what sound do you want, and what sound do you like in a context given
Actually I use both, the e602 in the hole and the AKG in center of the head. both signals parallel into one channel so the filter in the e602 is influencing both mics. A happy accident, that is somehow perfect for me!

Usefull video thanks for sharing.
Good to hear the difference between these mics.
But ...
Personal: there is to much Wonggggg 🙂in the kick drum it self.
Sorry about the Sound, this is do to the position. I would never record like that, but so the signal and the performance is for all mics the same.
you have to tell us which one sounded more accurately to the kick's acoustic sound, i bet its not the Sennheiser
The EV RE20 and it is absent, sorry. Out of these 4, maybe the D112. But the big problem is that no one is used to the original bass drum sound, except us drummers. And that's where the e602 comes in, that is more the sound an average music listener is used to.

@@bennokaiser698 I dont like the mics that have eq curves embedded in them, I want a natural sounding mic that records the kick as close to the acoustic sound as possible and then i will be able to make the kick sound the way I want . You say D112 and the RE200 are the closest to the actual sound of the kick drum when they placed outside the kick like in this video ?
Sennheiser for sure @ best
love the akg d12 but in this video not sound good....
The placement of 4 mics with the same conditions is not possible in the whole. So they are in a position where normally a large condensation is. Sorry about that.

Sounds like a bad D12. Those are notorious for losing the bottom end over the years. It should sound close to the others in fullness.
I totally agree! This one is has a freshly cleaned diaphragm. From 10xD12 one or two sound good.

D112 Wins!!!
