Magic the Gathering will always have a place in my heart, but I also love exploring new TCGs. I started playing games in college after years of failing at sports and have been addicted ever since.
Pokemon started the craze and addiction - moving me away from baseball cards and into the world of constant organization.

I don't see many kids these days playing MTG. It is all older players. Kids know Pokemon, they don't know MTG, just food for thought for the future based on my observations.

There's a lot of elementary schools and middle schools that provide mtg clubs completely supported by WOTC. My wife works in an elementary school where a teacher runs it. My brother does an after-school program in the middle school he works for, too. We live in a small town. I don't know how it is everywhere else.

@MrRayRockstar-Ok Louie...no I'm kidding that's great for your area but I agree with the OP, 95% of people playing MTG are dudes in their 30's,just something to consider, where are the 40% women and diverse people all the PC art/protocols were supposed to attract.

    1. This is normal for GP size events, there was a lot of chaos style single packs sold but people don’t go to a convention just to buy the same boxes they can get from their LGS.
    2. Agree but slightly undershooting is understandable.
    3. Love it
    4. Agree, also love it.
    5. Yeah I mean if we are meant to skip some products then they might as well generate hype for multiple things at once.

i was super disappointed with not being able to really play Friday (0 games) and Saturday (2 games), Friday i decided to get merch since i couldn't find a table and it took over 2 hrs. I've been to Vegas 2 times and Philly magic cons, Chicago was by far the worst, they sold out all tickets and should of known exactly how many tables were needed w/o putting people in the basement

Yep, people buy cards to play with and thankfully it's still a big part of the ecosystem in card shops.
Rudy created a narrative 7 years ago that we were all "investing" in boxes (because a few of us were collecting them) and his viewers ran with it, hard.
Magic is a game and Rudy came back into Magic during a downturn, saw boxes were maybe cheaper than they should have been and went 'I'm 16 and this is deep'.
Other than Mountain Dew and french bread pizzas, stores rely on singles. They have since I started 96! Wotc knows this, that's why they tried to screw over stores to sell secret lairs and Magic 30 kits.

Next year. If they come back to Chicago. They should try to do McCormick and the rosemont locations for the weekend. That would be nuts

I went and it wasn't too bad except for a few exceptions, I think they weren't prepared for the number of people. I had staff tell me it was the first one that had every badge sell out. A few play events were not run well I think because they didn't fully understand the event they were running. But overall I think it was a great event

Are you comparing mtg cons? Cause compared to collectacon or like comic con- big difference here is majority of people are looking to sit and play.

    • @MrRayRockstar
      @MrRayRockstar 4 місяці тому +2

@KitchenTableTCG That is a big difference. WOTC didn't anticipate the number of players actually playing. MTG isn't just a card game anymore. It's a pop culture phenomenon.

    • @hiddenleaf414

There’s a big difference between overcrowded and underprepared. They knew the ticket sales. Pasttimes didn’t rent enough tables and used the space unpractically.

I think I need to get that color sweatshirt you are wearing😊. I think the issue with the Chicago MagicCon was that WotC probably doesn't do a good job understanding the popularity of Magic from a geographic perspective. I went to MagicCon Mpls last year (b/c that is where I live) and it ran smoothly and was definitely not overcrowded. Probably a bit emptier than should have been on the events side, but all the events did sell out. I chose not to go to Chicago because it would be crowded because 1) It's Chicago, 2) it's easy to get to by driving for a lot of states in a big area and 3) it's probably somewhat cheaper than other locales. If WotC would have recognized this would be a bigger event than the last few I think it would have run smoothly. I would not be surprised if they are just planning these as "one size fits all".

My oldest son went to the Magic Con in Chicago. He had a great time but he told me that it was disorganized and poorly run. Most of the Magic Cons have been poorly run the past 18 months which is inexcusable. The Magic Con in Vegas last September was much better while the one in Vegas in 2022 was a disaster. A lot of people who paid for the Black Lotus tickets got turned away from many events and a lot of them are demanding a refund. Wizards needs to take responsibility and need to revamp on how to run these Magic Con. There is no excuse for this. Wizards should see how Comic Cons and or Star Trek Conventions are run. Though our group have stopped buying a ton of overpriced sealed boxes from the past 15 months, we love drafting and playing Commander at the kitchen table. It's a blast. We also buy proxies for .75 to $1.00 each. Thank you for the video.
