Phase modulated Formant Oscillators. I never would have imagined it would sound like this

  • In searching for smarter, more interesting FM modulators I started experimenting with phase modulating multiple aspects of a few formant oscillators, I can't believe the sound this creates.
Oh yeah, Frequency modulation and phase modulation are the same thing, I will be using both terms...
I think I'm just going to record myself messing around with it, practically speaking it is not parameter-intensive, or time-consuming once you know where to start.

Incredible tones! Will you be uploading this to the Reaktor User Library at some point?

Thank you so much! I will actually, probably sooner now that someone is interested. I want to include comments inside the core structure so someone could read what is going on and why. I will also be including an instructional video, there is a process I am using that will reliably get you 70% of the way to a polished sound. I think that makes the upload way more user friendly. I'm actually about to start recording a follow up video to this video. If you would like I could inform when I post to the user library, or I could email you the file as is today, just let me know.

@@Totokoi1 thank you so much for the elaborate answer. I'll just give you a follow right now and I'm looking forward to the next video and general progression. Would really love to be able to use these incredible sounds at some point. And I am 100% sure that I'm not the only one. This is really wild and great work!

Thank you, those words mean a lot. I just posted the follow-up video. Btw I like your music, how much do you use Reaktor? Are any of your songs using Reaktor? Your music sounds professional, as a hobbyist Reaktor user I take musician feedback seriously, what would you like to see when I upload this project?

@@Totokoi1 that's very kind of you, thank you. I'm half way through the follow-up video and it's fascinating. I have to admit that I'm not the most experienced Reaktor user. I'm also totally untalented when it comes to building my own instruments/effects. However the possibilities with the vast amount of creativity in the User Library are really endless and I find myself going down this rabbit hole every once in a while. I mainly use Reaktor to generate soundscapes, weird tones, modulations and rhythmic patterns that I bounce out for my personal sample library. Some of those samples get incorporated into my music making process later on. So to be honest I can't really say if there are many sounds from my Reaktor explorations in my past music. But currently I've been enjoying it more and more so I'm pretty sure it will play a role in future releases.
Concerning your question what I would like to see: Judging from your videos I guess everything is already there. The major unique thing with your ensemble is the crazy tones it can create. After that you can manipulate it in any way you want. You already implemented a basic filter, that's useful. Maybe some kind of basic modulation could be nice as well, but it's not really necessary.

This thing is a testbed, not necessarily practical for musical performance (yet), but I already have working envelope and LFO modulators just not displayed. Those things are easy for me to add, I just wanted to reduce the number of knobs on the screen while I was screen recording.
The Filter macro actually offers all of the TSK, Ladder, and 8pole Ladder in nonlinear forms, as well as the Butterworth 1 filters and nonlinear, resonant Butterworth 2 filters. Oh yeah and resonant Bessel filters so it looks pretty small but that should be pretty capable.
I guess I didn't mention anything about the filter or Efflim LeBivic's beautifully anti-aliased distortion stages in the tiny middle panel. I have quite a few thoughts on the project, making it hard to articulate all of the details without taking all day.
I just uploaded it to the user library in its current form, search "Phase Modulated Formant Oscillators" or search my name in the user library.
I just added more features so I will be uploading a newer version to the library pretty soon.
