Thanks! I sold my 2003 XK8 around 2012 or 2013. Now I own a 2010 XKR coupe. It's performance is incredible with 510 horsepower, but I still miss my 2003 convertible.
Invaluable video - made the job so much easier, although I have lacerated wrists from the sharp edges on the door panel. A tip that made it easier to remove the plastic link rod was to unbolt the latch from the door frame before attempting this as it gives you much more room to move the lock around, plus you can get some long-nose pliers in through the hole in the door jamb to squeeze the plastic tabs together on the back of the link rod and remove it.
Tip. Remove the exterior door handle, 2 nuts with a 7mm spanner, this removes the steel plate, then the link rod with the plastic end can be unhooked from the key lock. The white plastic part is only available with a latch. So if you break the tags off, then you will need a new latch at lots of pounds!! To get the latch out of the door, I removed the plastic shroud. 1 Phillips screw and then lever off. The cable can then be removed from the latch, and the latch will fly out of the top hole.
Terrific video--thank you so much! My car is a 2002 XJR, but the door latch is almost identical to the XJ8's. The three tips that were the most valuable: 1) Popping the ball fitting off the rod from the outside handle (I would never have had the nerve to pry hard enough to pop it off without knowing that that was the right thing to do), 2) Removing the bottom fastener on the window track (would never have figured that out, either), and 3) getting a replacement lock on e-Bay. By the way, my problem was a broken 2-cent plastic piece in the stepper motor that jammed everything in the unlocked position. I repaired the plastic piece, and it seemed solid, but I didn't want to risk it breaking again and maybe jam everything in locked position. That would have been a disaster. Hence, the e-Bay purchase.
I used this video to replace my outside door handle rubber seal. Two 7mm (5/16") bolts hold it in from the back side w/o much trouble getting at them. i had to cut the center of the seal in half so i didn't have to remove the linkage. Thanks Sam!
The latch rod that goes to the door key lock can be separated by sliding down black tab located about halfway between lock and door handle lock. Now you don't have to break the tab
My passenger door is stuck closed in the lock position. What is the best way to get the door open so I can replace the door lock mechanism? The window works. The inside door handle does not work. I have sprayed the door with liquid wrench and the inside door handle seems to be doing something. Just not unlocking Thanks, Tom
