He's an Empath cat. If he senses when you're anxious or stressed and comes near you, begins to purr or nudge you, he's trying to break you away from that feeling. I had a cat that used to do the same thing only I had cancer and when I was in pain, she would come and lay on me. Her purring would help the pain. Once I was in remission she stopped. Then my husband had surgery and was in alot of pain. She started doing the same thing for him. She was amazing!
It's kind of amazing, my mom has MS so on her bad days, when she sleeps all day, both of her Siamese sleep with her all day except to get drinks and food, purring up a storm.
Same here, I got cancer in 2019, my cat glued himself to me. I recovered and he then returned to the belligerent bugger he always was. It was an amazing experience, he kept me calm and sane.
This happened with us when we moved into our previous house back in 2005. A huge orange cat kept coming around. I asked some neighbors and it turns out he was a stray that the previous owners fed, and now we pretty much inherited him. He was a great cat and lived with us for many years after that.

That was my thought as well: Bojangles is not a stray cat. I wonder if the previous owners just left him, it happens quite a lot here in south Georgia.
My aunt got adopted by a feral stray like this. The cat is still quite skittish of strangers and took a while to get used to the indoors, but is now very much at home with being a kept cat!
You summarized why people love cats "He brings a calm sweet energy to the place" People who don't like cats don't get that. "It's kind of ridiculous but we have an understanding."

Had a cat do this to me just a few months ago. She was spayed, well-fed and wore a bluish flea collar. I left my patio door open and in she went, looked around and left. Three more times like that and she stayed the night and I began to feed her. A neighbor told me there was a flyer up about her so he contacted her owner who came over, saw she was comfy here and barely recognized him. I am 78 and he was in his early 30's so I remarked the old saying "Dogs have masters, cats have staff." It was the cat's choice and she chose me. Told him he could visit but haven't seen him since. They had other pets and worked so she chose an old lady who stayed home to wait on her.

Five years ago a similar thing happened to me. I was cleaning out my car when I heard a baby cat meowing. Then I look to my right and saw the kitten. I crawled under the car to get the cat and decided to adopt it. The mother must have dropped the cat off around my house. The cat was a runt too so she wouldn't have lived long if I hadn't cleaned my car that day.
We had a cat like this once: he decided to live with us. He belonged to someone in our street. We gave him back a few time, but he just came back again and again. So finally the owner said to us to just keep him. He lived with us for several more years.
Our cat, Jack, walked right up between my son and I when we were out for a walk and just started talking like we were old friends. He followed us home and hasn't left since.
We had a neighborhood cat- We were never exactly sure who’s it was, my sister thinks it’s one of the neighbors but I was never sure. Anyways, this cat was friends with everyone. She would walk up and play with kids, as a teenager I would come home late and she would be sitting at my driveway. I would open the door and she would climb into my car and explore. Always purring, she was awesome.
I had one tuxy born to my gray/black tiger mama and then we found another tuxy a couple of weeks later at a gas station. Both girls. The two ended up becoming the best of friends and they even looked so much alike we could only tell them apart by one having a little less white on her front left foot so that it wasn't a boot but more like a slipper. LOL
I love the confidence cats have where they can just own anything they want. It could be a chair, a house, or even a bus station. Once they decide "this is mine now", that is that. No more debate.
Yeah cats are like that. When I'm sitting somewhere in my flat or lying in bed and she decides she wants to warm up by laying on me then that's what happens. No debate. She gets a free petting too. Ah its wonderful. I provide for her and give her shelter and she lets me stroke her soft fur and hear her purrs. It's a great deal.
He looks like my late cat Jaguar, except he had green eyes. And true to his looks,he was a real gentleman, he had a very soft voice and would greet any guest who came to visit us. RIP buddy.
In my neighborhood cats like that are referred to as "community cats." Community cats are not feral, and they do not have a permanent home. During catch and releases, community cats will often have an ear docked before being released back into the neighborhood. This tells local PCA organizations not to round them up if there is a next time. We inherited an elderly cat who belonged to the former owner of our house, and we adopted a sketchy young community cat, a local girl from our neighborhood.

@Jennifer Pauk Tell more ...
@Jennifer: did you mean "naive"?
