John, let me tell you, I grew up without a dad by his own accord and my grandfather’s were both gone before I was born. And since I’ve found your channel several months ago it’s almost like you’ve taken those spots of those men I was missing in my life. I’ve learned so much from watching and absolutely share the same compassion for animals, glad to see Walter made it through! Even though we aren’t that far apart in age, I’ll be 50 in a few months I really think of you as a father/grandfather mentor! Thanks and keep up the great videos my friend!
I love the fact that you have the Con Edison Inspector skeleton sitting there when the inspector showed up. I would’ve loved to seen his face when he seen it. I’m still laughing to myself about it. 😂😂😂
True story. Many years ago the wife wanted a portable sewing machine because the old Singer just didn’t cut it. Well I venture to say, I’ve used that portable sewing machine about a hundred times. Wife? Not once! Great show today. That chisel turned out fantastic. Especially the little half circles at the top. Thanks.
Great show John man that oil glass was crazy money I had a heap from my grandpa and I did the same as you I thought they were worthless man great show god bless take care 🇺🇸🇳🇿🦅🔥🗡️47
Great video 👍 What a Great Mosh! That Poor Man’s Flea Market is Gold 🟡! That vintage sickle mower looked nice and what a cool light fixture 💡. That chisel you restored turned out Fantastic! 👍 That vintage oil bottle cleaned up great ! I like the satin finish on the metal spout. What a great story about your little buddy Walter the Spider 🕷 ,good to see he made it and back in his home. Great shot of Old Glory 🇺🇸 flying in the breeze. Well again great video and can’t wait to see what you do on Friday. Have a great evening. 😃👍👍
My Dad was A Brick Manson for 60 years. When he passed away I was the only one in the family who wanted his tools. I’m very sentimental. Sadly I gave many of the chisels that were mushroomed, thinking there were not restorable. The good news is I gave them to a Brick Manson who had a great appreciation for the tools. I did keeps some hammers and trowels. Also line ties that Brick Manufactures gave away free. I must have 30 of them with Brick companies that no longer exist. I’m trying to figure out how to restore and display. I have so many fond memories of seeing my Dad come home carrying his white canvas bag.
Great show Scout! Excellent work on the chisel. And thanks for doing another poor man's flea market. It's like a treasure hunt. Earlier this year I had a spider in the workshop that I called Charlotte. I could tell she was doing a number on the crickets and other insects by the number of leftovers in and around her web. As with Walter, she became used to me and would remain on the web while I was in the area. After about six months she disappeared. Great job with Walter! 😊👍
I appreciate how well you treat animals no matter what it is! Imagine useing this oil can for drinks... very styleish lol. Have a good rest of the Week.
Going forward I’m changing calling my problem “Shiny Object Syndrome” to “Scoutcrafter Syndrome”. Every time the Honey-do list has CLEAN THE BASEMENT on it I somehow find a small project that delays my chores. Been that way my whole life! Great job on that chisel, John!
The sewing machine made me laugh, i love sewing machines, but I rarely ever sew. Thanks for the plug, the fiber wheel did a nice job on that spout. Great stuff. Cheers
John, you really go the extra mile in caring for animals and especially insects out there and that is a rarity - I really strive to be more like you! I can't believe I had my heartstrings tugged by a two-minute spider story... Glad he was just molting.
I'm working on restoring an antique zither! Whether it's an old instrument or an oil bottle, old stuff always has something artistic going on! The shape, the markings, the embossing or engraving, or even just the labels or boxes, everything was made to appeal to the eye! Some of the kids never get to experience that today! Great job on the chisel and the bottle!
Instruments were always next level woodworking, just as Gunsmithing is next level machining. I amazes me that some instruments hold up over a hundred years with simple hide glue. 😃👍
@@ScoutCrafter it's great stuff! Before they rebuilt the entie pipe organ at St Patrick's Cathedral, I used to be one of the repair people there! The whole thing was held together with hide glue! Fish glue isnt bad either!
All those years ago, some guy is taking his walk at about two in the morning, peers into a garbage can, and says: “ What kind of MANIAC throws away these glass oil containers?”
Hi John, good stuff as usual. I agree so much with your closing comments. We can't expect to be great on the first attempts, takes time and patience to be your best. My work has progressed over the last few years, but so many things I'm still a novice at, so I look for projects to enhance and practice the things I need to work on. Challenges are good for us!
The chisel looks terrific. I expect many of us have wished we kept certain things from the past. One thing I did not throw out was my slide rule. I still have my slide rule from high school. I do not use it, likely it is not worth anything, but for me an emotional connection to my high school days. I then used the slide rule during university. Calculators were not allowed when taking exams back then. Dave.
Another great video! And a blast down memory lane. I have one of my dad's oil bottles but the spout has a cap. The fiber wheel is a good tip, I'll try it. When you talked about cleaning it with gas I remembered my auto shop teacher asking us not clean parts in gas because the the solvents were safer and did a better job. At the time solvents were not cheaper, and all of us had a parts cleaner in the trunk of the car (empty Folgers can). And yes, we used Ethyl. LOL. Glad your utilities stuff is squared away. When I have a utility person visit here, they will tell me the arrival time is between 8 A.M. and 5 P. M. GHEESZ....give yourselves a window folks! SMH!
The spider story was a fun listen, you have a heart for a life, I commend you for that, every life has a purpose. The inspector story had me laughing when you showed the skeleton in a hard hard and said that it had been a long time since the last one and said he seemed to hurry along after that to get out, 😮😊😂😂😂. The oil jar, I haven’t seen one of them in years. Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed the watch and listening.
Cool mosh SC. Yeah the cleaning and inspector visit would drive me nuts. Not knowing what they were going to need access to, but you made it through it. Love the facets and looks of the chisel and wow the striking end looks magnificent!
The chisel looks really good along with the oil bottle and spout! The mushroom head on the chisel end reminded me of steel stamps I used to mark part numbers on castings before machining them. I often needed to use a burr gun and sanding sleeve to remove the small mushroom head on the little stamp ends. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks John, great job on the chisel, I've recently been working on an old bolster chisel of my Dads which was terribly mushroomed, it was the one he used for every slab or block that needed to be cut, so I remember it well ! I thought at first you meant the lawn-mower but the Sword is particularly relevant this week as we have new laws now prohibiting the ownership of "Machetes"' and "Zombie Knives" due to knife crime in youth groups, the definitions are quite universal and are a distinct change from the existing "carrying" rules, sadly I don't think it will do much to stop those intent on causing or threatening harm but will impact some legitimate users ! You know giving names to your local wildlife is the first sign.....I have been observing a Blue-tit ("Bluey") that has been roosting in the vent from our hob extractor - he frightens the life out of me every time I go out in the evening and he whizzes off into the trees at speed, before returning to roost. I guess the little fella, feels safe tucked up out of the weather and away from the watching eyes of our local Hawks !
What a great show! Love the spider story and the oil jar and chisel came out beautifully. My sister gave me a fridge magnet several years ago; "I can't clean my house because I get distracted by all the cool things I find."
Another inspiring video John. Don't feel alone on the morphing cleaning project. Going to the basement and piling up a box of tools to take out to the Annex I usually find a tool that gets set aside because it was passed over. Too old to damaged, just too much work. It may have been boxed up before the turn of the century. I was working in and on the Original Sneelock's Workshop before I was old. 😁 After I got the fiber wheels mounted on the motor the jobs don't take near as long. What does take longer is getting out the camera, lights, etc. Then reshooting the bad shots and editing the result. One screwdriver can be cleaned up in an hour or less. Getting the video done can take 4 hours. Especially if I find a better way to do the work, or make the shot, or have the sound work better. Spiders are just outside my friend zone. I don't go after them if they mind their own business. This time of year they loop webbing from tree to ground, tree to tree, across the doorway, or just flapping in the breeze. Makes me feel like Indiana Jones. It's good that Con-Ed checked your connections. I hope they used bubble solution instead of running their lighters over the joints like Elmer did at the foundry. First time I saw him check for leaks on an oxy-acetylene rig I decided to keep a close eye on him. 😁
Dave- The old school plumbers running a lighter over gas joints was always funny- I once saw a guy find a leak like that- no explosion just looked like a butane lighter flame! 🫣😂👍
John, I know we both like to maximize the use-life of items - but they are so inexpensive, you might want to consider replacing your fluorescent lamps with full spectrum LED fixtures. The best thing about them, if you get the right kind the light will give you more color accuracy in your shop. And they are much easier to clean dust off of. They use even less electricity than the fluorescent lamps, and give more light. I did this a few years ago, and wow what a difference!🇺🇸👍🏼🤓
I know exactly how you feel about throwing out those vintage oil bottles. I've tossed some items myself (in the name of cleaning up and decluttering) that I later came to regret. And that type of regret sticks with you forever! I just recently replaced one such item I'd tossed 20 years ago by buying (and not cheaply) a replacement on eBay. It felt good!
Thanks for thinking of us Bud!! We're good with Sewing machines for now, that machine would be good for a lil' Girl to make doll clothing!! I have an Orb-Weaver Spider in my back yard I watch, he makes a 10ft X 10ft web every night!!☻
I thought sure you were pulling our leg and that spider would turn into something from Holloween. 😛 I have a old heavy duty Singer 5K25 and a 31- 15 another Singer without the foot pedal but a really nice one from Sears like the one you found. Sewing is important when you are my size. Not to mention the hoobies of leather and old camping gear.
Great video. Loved the spider story. And no, nobody sews anymore. My sister in law is trying to keep it alive by giving young girls sewing lessons. It's tough, though. Not much interest these days.
Back in the 1980s the maintenance schedule at the Post Office had a cleaning schedule for the florescent tubes. You cannot imagine how much dust is generated in the post office. Run zillion pieces of mail per day and the dust abounds
I used to have a gas detector in the basement. My shop is also in the basement. When the meter was new, I was working in the shop and had a tiny farkle - of course the detector went off. That was the end of the detector.
The bulk pick up in my neighborhood is next week, haven’t seen as much out at the curb as in the spring. The neatest thing so far was one of those antique soda coolers on legs with the bottle opener on the side. It disappeared in less than 24 hrs
That oil bottle brings back memories of my grandfather's apple orchard in Wisconsin. I still have the bottle, and it's filled with beads from a St. Patrick's Day parade in Biloxi, MS. My grandfather was quite the hard-working Irishman.
You have a lot of compassion. Talking about Spiders, I get those Wolf spiders in my basement and I keep a jar down there and capture them when I find them and let them go outside. I'll tell you though, that is about the spookiest looking spider I have ever seen, big too! Got those rows of huge looking eyes. That chisel came out fantastic. There's no way a person would ever no that is the same chisel. I relate to what you said about the chisel, keeping the lines straight and not wavey. I think I am using to heavy a grit sometimes. I use to use one of those lawn mowers back in the day. Then we got another mower that looked just like that but it had a gas motor on it. I think it was self-propelled too. I'm kinda fuzzy on that part. It was over 60 years ago, can't quite remember. I would have probably grabbed that and that shop vac. Oh, and I would have grabbed that sewing machine, keyboard and, oh yeah, that little bike. I have had a pickup truck since the 70's and I always liked the "poor man's flea market." It was always nice to be able to haul all that good stuff home. I'll tell you though, I'm getting to where I am really slowing down but I still have my pickup truck. I don't think I could ever bear to be without my pickup truck. 🤓 Do you think you might be able to give a demonstration on sharpening those utility knife blades? I think that would be pretty cool to see. One last thing. I'm sorry to ask you about this but I recently got a very good deal on a Craftsman 1 HP, 12.4 amp, 113.19091 electric motor. It is a dual arbor motor that has keyways. Is there a proper way to use spindle adapters on those arbors that don't, themselves, have a keyway? I know that sometimes people will just tighten the hex screws of the adapters into the keyway slot and I know you shouldn't do that but is there anyway of properly being able to adapt these somehow? Anyway, really good and enjoyable video.
Yes! Those keyway cutouts are a major pain for arbor adapters. The best way to approach this issue is to add a spacer into the grove the same size as the cutout, this way you can clamp down on the spacer. 😃👍
I ordered a Tub o'Towels after watching the video you originally presented it in, and I just used it (half a towel) on a nice older Snap-On wire cutter with red handle covers that were filthy (found at Goodwill). It cleaned up great. Thanks for the advice and the tool restorations. ~What kinda manic doesn't have a spider or three in the basement... Wayne out West (Colorado)
@@ScoutCrafter I just cleaned a drift punch and I painted it with Helmsman spar varnish to protect it. I like how it came out. I've done a bunch of tools with Helmsman. It's good stuff.
I ordered the fiber wheel you showed because I have a frequent use for one in my antique tool restorations. My only concern is what is your grinder shaft size? Does the typical plastic adapter to 5/8 work for 16mm or will I need to look into making the adapter? Thanks.
Joe- Our first go to is always eBay but sometimes we look for an old beat up wrench for a parts donor. If it was Crescent there are tons of NOS parts available. 😃👍
Zombie knife ban came into effect today, pretty much any large, long or heavy duty blade. It won't stop the scumbags though, just make it more appealing to them. What it will do though is empower the police to impose more serious charges if caught in possession, unfortunately that is likely to be a fine as the prisons are so full a large number of low risk offenders are being released if they have served 40% of their term.....beggars belief. 🤔
Where did this ban happen? I have a machete I use for yard work. I have a brush hook too. Brush hooks are really medieval. I don't use it so much. I still ain't giving it up though. On my property there's places where I can use it. I have a thing for axes too. Axes I definitely use a lot. I'm on acres of woodland.

Never heard of those talking gas leak detectors in the UK. Our natural gas has mercaptan added to it - one of the most foul smells on the planet. Does your gas have the same? We don't have skunks here, apparently skunks smell worse than mercaptan, but it's a close contest. And Swedish Surströmming smells worse than both.

That oil bottle brings back memories of my grandfather's apple orchard in Wisconsin. I still have the bottle, and it's filled with beads from a St. Patrick's Day parade in Biloxi, MS. My grandfather was quite the hard-working Irishman.
You named the spider. 😂
Do you think you might be able to give a demonstration on sharpening those utility knife blades?
@@ScoutCrafter Thank you very much.
You should have keep those oil jars sir with rhe wire container wow😊
That oil jar is great, i would use it as a coin jar to drop my change into at the end of the day.
Wayne- Honestly I’m amazed at how great they are at cleaning up tool handles! Well worth the money. Glad you like them too! 😃👍
OLIVE OIL WOULD BE REAL NICE IN THAT VINTAGE MOTOR OIL JAR - FOR THE KITCHEN.
Fantastic idea!
What kind of maniac doesn't name their spiders.
👍
Nice video. The push mower, shovel, and sewing machine would have come home with me. After the spider event your karma bank must be maxed out.
BOOM 😂😂😂😂😂
Gotcha boom👍👍🔩🔩

Boy it's been dry on longisland huh we've only had sprinkles by me no big rain yet.
Alan- Yes here too! Surprising! 😃👍
I feel your pain about cleaning up the shop
What did they used to use to seal those oil jars up? Did they have some sort of Cork?
John- I was thinking the same thing- The seal from the cap seemed very good but a gasket would assure a tight seal..
I dont kill spiders there more friends than foe they eat bugs that bug me lol
Great chisel. Do you wax it? Just auto paste wax?
Hi Sam- Polish then wax- Mothers Carnauba Cleaner Wax! Best stuff made! 😃👍
@@ScoutCrafter I just cleaned a drift punch and I painted it with Helmsman spar varnish to protect it. I like how it came out. I've done a bunch of tools with Helmsman. It's good stuff.
Hi John, I've got a couple of old oil cans 'pump' that don't pump any more are they repairable 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
Yes! Many times they require just a good cleaning or sometimes a gasket but most of those are very repairable! 😃👍
I ordered the fiber wheel you showed because I have a frequent use for one in my antique tool restorations. My only concern is what is your grinder shaft size? Does the typical plastic adapter to 5/8 work for 16mm or will I need to look into making the adapter? Thanks.
Tony- They come with a 1/2” hole and you can press them onto a larger shaft. They will give with some force. 😃👍
How do I find a thumb screw for a Billings & Spencer adjustable wrench?
Joe- Our first go to is always eBay but sometimes we look for an old beat up wrench for a parts donor. If it was Crescent there are tons of NOS parts available. 😃👍
@@ScoutCrafter Thanks
@@1pcfred UK , I used to laugh about this sort of thing but these days my head drops and I wonder if I have my shoes on the right feet 🐾

I'd like to see your coop one day or if you already have a vid..shoot me a link.. pigeons have fascinated me since I was little... I trapped and raised quit a few growing up and later always had a pen full when I trained retriever... my youngest daughter loves spiders... she has a room full of them 😳 she's wierd 😅
Yes- Smells like rotten eggs! 🫣😂👍
John, are you going to tell the inspectors about the water that comes through your panel?
I did- he was just there for Gas stuff. 😂😂😂
I sent a message did you return it??
Troy- Didn’t get it can you send to my email- bicycleguy@aol.com
