- It seems like an age ago that over 5 million of you watched Richard Hammond reveal the new Land Rover Defender. But now he has the keys to one, and of course the first thing he has decided to do with it is take the dog for a walk.

I think it’s a modern incarnation of the 1st/2nd gen Disco.
I’m a Land Rover fan, and I’m not thinking that at all. I’ve driven every Disco, and I’ve driven every Series/Defender iteration. This is a Defender, the on-road ride is all the proof you’d need.
Exactly what that is a luxurious suv desinged by accountants.. it's certainly not a workhorse utility vehicle, land rover have messed up big time..what about in places like Africa where road conditions are really rough and unforgiving you think a luxurious suv with 20 inch rims and very low profile tyres with air suspension is going to make it far😂😂😂 and who would fix it in the middle of nowhere without some fancy high tech equipment when it breaks? No doubt the land rover ceo will collect some dumb car of the year award for that new defender

we've always had a defender on the farm it has all sorts thrown in the back of it and it will continue to be used for the job, I'm sure long after these new ones have gone to the scrap heap

@@justinasvaiciulis6546 If it was a land cruiser series 70 I would. They already made enough useless range rovers you could spend a fortune on and fear of getting muddy, what was the point of reusing the defender name for this? Just let it die with some dignity.
@@jamesoren7238 excellent point. The Defender is a brand and as a company, I suppose they'll try to squeeze every last drop out of it. But they could have done something more imaginative than just another Discovery e.g., the beetle for example was a golf and died again, aka it just didn't capture that original beetle lure. Now the new kombi on the other hand, not sure if it ever launched actually, was really neat and seemed to encapsulate the same fun/freedom DNA the original Kombi had - until you see the price! www.bbc.com/news/business-40998128
The older one is better the new one is just for rich people to take there kids to school it is to posh for a farmer to use unlike the old one

At the end of the day, it's an excellent 4x4 with class leading off road capability and even better on road comfort, mixed with the latest infotainment tech..... Who cares whether the word on the hood says Defender or Discovery?

People who have "proper" Defenders, don't put seat belts on their dogs. I wouldn't be seen dead driving a new one. There's something ever-so-slighlty feminine about it. Like it's amed at the school run market.

The problem with the old defender was that it couldn’t accommodate airbags, and so couldn’t be sold in America......it wasn’t that it didn’t sell over here.....I wish I’d kept my 06 TD5XS.....They are now selling second hand for way more than cost price new.....if I knew then what I know now....
It's a poncy overpriced status symbol & the closest vehicles like that get to "off-road" is the grass verge outside the houses of the "more money than sense brigade" that buy them!

Hammond’s right it is the ‘new’ discovery, where the actual discovery now is more of a Range Rover and the actual Range Rover has gone super upmarket, more of a luxury limousine.
Cause no one has 100k for a car other than the elite so they have to market it as a luxury cause what punter is dropping 100 bags on a car

The current Discovery is more like a Freelander, something that I never liked.
@@fdcx1852 I can see why people who live in a dense city and who are going to trade in their cars every 2 years would just lease it. You save a bit of cash. The issue comes in when you drive more than the criminally low mileages the companies attach to the lease.

fun fact: the land rovers mentioned in the film going to Darjeeling are still in use in those areas as transport to the locals and tourists on trails who cannot go by foot, still going on pretty strong!

Love it, same as my thoughts many months back when I had a chance to see the ‘Defender’ visit our local showroom. My view is it is the true Discovery 5!

@@jwilson2793 they can't even sell the Bronco in Europe. Doesn't meet any of the pedestrian safety regulations. 😂 Plus I don't know why you'd compare sales volumes(Ford) with desirability (Land Rover)? Casio sell more watches than Rolex, but I know which one I'd rather have. 😂
@@gc2234 true, however Rolex doesn’t have the notorious track record of reliability that LR has with their lineup. Even if the Defender is “different from the other lineup”, normal buyers will stay away alone just for that (and the average buyer can’t afford a $48K start price vs $32K for the Bronco.) of course the Defender is fantastic I don’t want to not leave that image. I just wouldn’t count the Bronco out just yet, it’s showed to have the chops to handle its own on the trails and off-road. The typical buyer of Defenders would be caught dead going on the Rubicon Trail

Owned 5 Land rovers only one gave me a problem (electronic Handbrake) have a new Discovery Sport 2 years no problems, I do not get all these unreliability reports.
@@petergrimes5115 Completely agree, I am on my 8th and one sticking electric handbrake in 40 years, oh and a puncture. The Discovery 4 I own now is the best vehicle I have ever owned ( apart from my Series One )
Everyone here is talking about discoveries and I have series 1s, 2As, a 2B, 3s, a forward control 101",a 6 wheel drive firetruck and an ambulance...

Well anyway my favourite has to be my series 1 107" its has a great story behind it and it was a gift to me from my uncle
(and not one of them has ever had serious damage that couldnt be repaired on the side of a road all I've had to do is not drive them like a farmer)

It’s not a defender it’s lost it’s versatility. Show me a chassis cab version that can have a tipper body and a chipper on the back.
fun fact: the XFO 255 Land Rover (Series 1) was used in Episode 5 of Season 2 of Top Gear. Richard decided to buy it and restore it, but as we can see that didn't happen.

@@gc2234 It has the mechanical bits of a Discovery. It looks like a Discovery, especially at the front. It's as expensive as a Discovery. So Land Rover can call it a Discovery or a Freelander or an LR5. But they're not fooling anyone by pretending that it's any kind of Defender. A Defender is a simple rugged car that a Bush mechanic can work on. This vehicle is so complex that even Land Rover dealers can't service it properly.
@@jackdren9974 but the whole point is... the taste you're referring to will be the taste of the Defender. And the taste of the thing that Land Rover call the Discovery is the taste of the Discovery. They're completely different sandwiches. You're just confused.
@@geoffk777 wrong... You're thinking of the OLD Defender.... Which I guess is now known as the "Classic Defender". The Land Rover Defender from the year 2020 onwards is the blue vehicle you see in this video which can go anywhere and do anything in unbelievable comfort and style, but still won't shatter your spine when driving it for longer than 20 minutes.
