Your title "Slow stitching" got me curious because in my 75 yrs I'd never heard this term. I had to chuckle to myself when I saw what you were doing and decided "slow stitching" was just a new term for hand sewing and/or decorative sewing that I've been doing for years. Your piece is so cute and reminds me of when I was a child using scraps of material from my mom [who made all our clothes] to make pieces like this when I was learning to sew. Everything old is new again and that's a good thing. Thanks Nina and hugs, you've made my day!
Yup, when I first heard the term slow stitching I was intrigued. Imagine my surprise when I discovered it was just hand embroidery that I'd been doing for close to 55 years. I guess this generation just lets machines do all the work. I like the Japanese way of actually learning from elders so the old arts and crafts are not lost. When the Zombie Apocalypse hits, the survivors are gonna need us - LOL!
Hello Marlene, how lovely that your Mom made all your clothes and taught you to sew with the scraps. My Mom was a great seamstress as well, but I didn’t inherit her talent 💕
I loved the project. I am a Home Economics teacher working with special needs students and I am teaching them sewing. This project will be perfect for them to learn hand sewing. I will continue to watch your videos and share them with my students.
I love this project ! One little tip, if you have a ribbon that is fraying just singe the end of it with a lighter or candle flame and it melts the very end and stops the fraying, thanks four sharing this 😊
Love this Nina, the perfect project you could even do on your lap relaxing with some music. We all have fabric scraps, bits of lace and trims or can get them very easily and inexpensively! Yours turned out beautifully!💕🇨🇦
Welcome to the world of slow stitch! Your project is so cute. You can separate floss by holding the end between your thumb and forefinger land just pulling out one strand at a time. It will bunch up, but just straighten it out before you pull the next thread. The threads lay flatter and have better coverage when separated as singles. Thanks for sharing this. Happy creating!
Back in my quilting days, Nina, I did a fair amount of slow stitching collage pieces, which was a relaxing craft when I took a break from quilting. I sold my 16’ Gammill quilting machine a decade ago, which I used to quilt for several award winning art quilters. This is when I entered the world of mixed media and I haven’t looked back. Maybe, I may have to create a small fabric collage to work on, when I’m away from my art room. I still have all the stuff! Your piece is a nice example for folks new to the craft or want something manageable to do. Looking forward to seeing what folks do on your FB.
Wow Cheryl. There are no end to your talents. As you know, I have always struggled with sewing, but I thoroughly enjoyed making this little piece. We’ve had some lovely ideas shared in the group already and I also look forward to what the week ahead will bring. Have a fabulous week my friend ❤️🧵🪡
It was a wonderful gift Eugene. Thank you so much. I’ll be trying the brooch next and perhaps a paper clip embellishment as well. Have a great week my friend ❤️
What a beautiful piece of slow-stitchery Nina, can't believe it's your first one, I bet you'll be hooked now, it's such a relaxing pastime, I'm definitely addicted. Love Tori's colourful kits, I have one myself :)
Hi Nina, thank you for sharing this, it's lovely. I don't have a sewing machine, so I hand stitch all the time(clothing alterations etc), and although it's usually a chore, this kind of stitching is much more fun and enjoyable. I love what you've done today. Your videos are always uplifting and great to watch, as you always do different forms of art work, it keeps it inte resting. You're an inspiration to all of us. Take care and have a lovely week ahead, xx😘
I did. Will be doing a couple more pieces this week as it’s perfect for doing on the sofa whilst Toby is on my lap (as long as he doesn’t try to eat it haha!). 💜
You have created an amazing slow stich project. If you didn't tell us it was your first attempt, no one would have guessed. The bird is an awesome addition to your piece, but I get the need to wait. Congratulations you gathered, you stitched, you conquered ! LOL. Have a delightful week. 🥰🙏
Your finished project is adorable. Slow stitching can be very relaxing. I enjoyed watching the whole process of picking fabrics, stitching, and creating the card. Love that little bird! Thanks!
Cute project, Nina! This is similar to the monthly kits you used to share with various paper scraps. Always enjoyed watching your process for creating such beautiful items from a pile of paper, ribbon, etc. TFS!
Hello!! Nina…. I love to watch ur channel and all ur projects…. Thank you for always great inspiration ❤ off the find some thing for another great idea……. 💯❤️
Thank you so much Nina, I really really enjoyed watching you create this adorable and cute slow stitching piece. I absolutely adore it. It’s really really cute 🥰 as a button. (Excuse the pun). I’m going to have a go at this. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags ❤❤❤
I think it turned out lovely and it makes a beautiful card, the colour threads look good, embroidery thread should be drawn one strand at a time to avoid a tangle . I sew a lot but haven't tried the slow stitch yet. Thank you 🌞
That is a wonderful project Nina, I love the bird button on it but understand why you are debating gluing it on. My craft area is a disaster, we had a week plus of rainy days and I have partially done projects every where because I left them when the sun came out. I have been working in the garden and repotting some of my house plants. I hope you have a stellar week!!❤❤
Thanks Debbie, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think I will add the button. If it makes you feel any better, mine is a disaster again as well. I am spending today having a big tidy up! Hope you have a great week ❤️ xo
This is just what i needed, i havent done any slow stitching for years either. It doesn't have to be perfect, its hand stitching. Grest little project. I mounted mine on felt, a little fairy im working on and mushrooms.
I love this, Nina and you have inspired the worst sewer in the world to try this. I am in need of a good rest today and I am willing to have a go at this while I relax on the settee. Your piece is really cute and it's brilliant, especially for a first attempt. Have never heard of this technique before. Thank you so much for the inspiration and tuition and have a lovely day. x
Good morning nina, just returned from my holiday in Belgium, had a good time there. Loved this little project and can imagine you enjoyed doing this. I will try this too, as you know I love stiching . Today will be filled with the laundry, gardening, unpacking. Although Abel is not a dog, he greeted me so sweet, showing he was glad to see me again. Wushing you a nice sunday and a good week. Love and hugs lenaxxx
Good morning Lena, glad you enjoyed your Holiday and I look forward to hearing all about it. Abel must have missed you a great deal. Yes, I enjoyed this project very much and I hope you will too. Have a wonderful week. Love and hugs 💕 xxx
💜💕💜,and I would add the bird 😁….Lol! Believe it or not I hate sewing 😂,but sometimes ,but only on arty stuff I will give it a go if for something special 😊X
My grsndmom & mom taught me to hold the split thread with my 1st & 2nd fingers & 3rd & 4th fingers then use your other hand to run the thread down. Hard to explain, easy to do. 🤠
Super cute project Nina! To be honest I don’t love the process of slow stitching but I do love the way it looks so I’ve tried it a few times and feel more comfortable attempting it ❤
Thanks Martha, I have wanted to try this for a long time. I think I will stick to small projects that I can finish quickly though as I’m too impatient haha 💙🧵🪡
This is such a happy little piece! I used to don”slow stitching” before it was ever called that and I have so many things in my stash to do it with. So once again you have inspired me to get that stuff out and make something pretty and fun! 🤗
Hi Nina. Loved your video. You will definitely get hooked with the slow stitching... Excuse the pun😅. I love working with fabrics. I did my fine art thesis on fabric... Practical to pedestal. Textiles can be missed in the art world. There is always a big debate between Art & craft... Take a look at the amazing artist Yinka Shonibare. He does amazing pieces that are exhibited at the Royal academy. They are on a massive scale. So inspirational. I love your piece of art. Lovely on a wall . It would make e beautiful gift. Thanks for including slow stitching. Happy Art & Crafting.💕
It's a 12/10 from me, this is absolutely brilliant, really enjoyed watching you do this. Sadly if I handle a needle at all it has to be a darning needle as my hands won't cater to the small ones these days. Tfs xo
The easiest way to divide embroidery thread is to cut the six-strand amount you need, then take one end of the cut piece and separate the number of strands you need (just half an inch or so). Take those threads you need in one hand and gently pull them upwards while keeping the other stands as a whole in your other hand. The needed threads should glide upwards out of the unneeded stands held in the other hand. Long explanation for a simple professional procedure that is effective 100% of the time. No tangles, no knots. (Give a look at the YT vid by Easy Sewing for Beginners "How to Separate Embroidery Floss and Preparing Your Thread for Hand Embroidery" - go directly to 5:26 for the demo.) Love your beginner piece!
if you pull one thread out of the bunch at a time. Lightly pinch at the top and then put them back together (25yrs of stitiching and 3 years owning a needlework shop) :D
Ohh God i totally love the end result & really think you should put the button bird on because it finishes it lovely! But these kind of projects are certainly not my cup of tea :(
Really cute! Unfortunately due to having RA in my hands this sort of craft is a no-go for me. Although I suppose I could forego the hand/slow stitching and just use my sewing machine, wouldn't be the same but close enough, right?
To separate threads it's better not to have too long a length - I 'hold' one end in my mouth while splitting off 2 or 3 strands in one hand & the rest in the other, pulling them apart. I have no idea if that makes any sense to anyone but me!

Supper cute! Thank you so much will definitely try it.
Love how cutey!!!❤👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🌈
To separate the threads, PULL one slowly from the top while gently holding the remaining threads. They separate so much easier that way.
Beautifully done Nina . Not something I have tried but love the end result . Thank you . Kay x
Thanks Kay, it was fun to do 💕 x
What a nice result you had there. This might be the ultimate holiday craft. A bag of off cuts some different treads and go....
Yes, it would be perfect holiday craft 💕🧵🪡
