Thankyou. I've been telling people since this happened that with a ceiling mirror he could see if Magnus was bluffing with his pieces, perhaps even stashing a Queen or two up his sleeve.
Either Hans Niemann used mission impossible level technology to cheat or Magnus Carlson and the entire chess community conspired to defame an innocent man. Both movie worthy.
There’s a chance that there was a mole in Magnus’ circle, the main point of speculation was Hans miraculously studied Magnus’ opening line (which Magnus had never opened with prior to the match) the morning of, as he stated in a post game interview. Perhaps Magnus did that to try and prove/flush out the collaboration
Those are not the only two options lol. It is equally possible that Magnus simply believed he cheated because of the circumstances (specifically him apparently preparing for an opening Magnus has never used in competition and having suspicions of a mole), and that everyone else looked at it and went “yeah, that’s valid.” Then it came out that Hans did cheat in online games, which added even more justification to those doubts of a legitimate win. I don’t think any of the parties actually involved in this situation thought he used cutting edge tech, they thought he simply knew the opening in advance, which makes it a lot easier to prepare for.
@@princessariaCheating online and cheating in a real game are two different things. It does not indicate real life behavior by any means. Many people would be comfortable cheating in an online video games with no real stakes (other than a ban) but would not do so in real life. There was no indication or evidence that Hans Niemann ever cheated in a real life tournament. This was always used as "evidence" to muddy the waters in order to support dubious claims of irl cheating by Magnus Carlsen. There was never any evidence of cheating as well. Magnus Carlsen should never had made unsubstantiated claims like this publicly and should have been bought up in private to the Tournament Organizers. Nothing claimed here by you is any indication of cheating. Hans Niemann getting lucky in his preparation is just that. Him getting lucky. The chess community did him dirty to suck up to Magnus. It's pretty disgusting if you think about it.
The thing is Niemann isn't "an innocent man". Niemann has cheated in the past and admitted to this. What he's admitted to is that it happened twice. I don’t get how Magnus Carlsen doesn’t get any flack for what happened to Hans career, considering it seems like he just couldn’t accept losing, and had to make Hans out to be a cheater
I'm convinced that had something to do with the settlement in some way. Magnus agrees to brush it under the rug and Hans gets paid out what he lost as a result. As long as Magnus isn't raising a stink anymore, Hans wins.
I think a big part is that Magnus has lost matches before. He’s not exactly undefeated, so it at the very least doesn’t seem likely that he’d just call someone he lost to a cheater out of pettiness.
People initially balked at the $100 million in damages that Niemann was demanding, but it makes sense in the context of Carlsen's own net worth which is like over $50 million right now in his early 30s, and could probably double over the rest of his professional career just through investments and market returns, etc. The argument goes that since Niemann beat Carlsen in such a public and high profile match, he has a credible claim to having been denied a similar career trajectory. It will be interesting to see what happens to him now as a cleared professional player WRT his baggage but at the very least he'll make the game interesting for a while
"What if's" like that don't go very far in court. Suing for damages generally needs to have something concrete-ish tied to it (lost wages, pain and suffering, medical expenses). The possibility of career trajectory that is impossible to predict is not damages.

Just my opinion, I think Magnus was having a bit of a struggle the past year. There was more drama with him last year then just Hans, even to the point he had stopped playing chess in general for a few month's, allowing himself to be dethroned from the top spot (just temporarily). Hans has always been open and regretful about his online cheating. The two incidents when he was found to be cheating were when he was young. Like just finding hair in new places young. He's an adult now. He should be held accountable for what he did, but not chastised for where he's going. When you play chess at Magnus and Niemann's level, it truly can come down to luck or one wrong move. They are both 8 moves ahead and practiced different strategies for each game. Hans said he had just so happened to practice defending against the plays Magnus was making. If any cheating was involved, it was someone from Magnus team selling information, but truly I think it was just luck. The look on Niemann's face when he won was absolute shock.
The reason why Hans saying that he had practised the moves that Magnus was using was because Magnus had only ever used them once before like 20 years ago. Hans said he was studying old Magus games, so the chance of him studying that specific game was abysmal, which just made him seem more suspicious

right, so anyone can just cheat if they want to, because even if they get caught, they wont be banned from competing. and then they can just cheat again, and the evidence is "inconclusive" and its not fair to their career to ban them. even though it has been conclusively proven they did cheat in the past.
it doesnt matter that thats unfair to the careers of everyone who doesnt cheat.

"We damn near revived Oppenheimer to build a functioning chess bot butt plug" is not a sentence I thought I'd be hearing today.
Hans and Magnus are the most “I play chess for a living” names I’ve ever heard.
also i think what actually happened is there was a "mole" from magnus's side, giving hans the opportunity to study his opener when he hadnt used it yet, cheating is always a possibility as technology is always advancing, but i think its also equally possible he just had someone tell him what to study
Nah, the butt plug sounds more reasonable and realistic to me.
Isnt Chess a spectator sport? Is there anything preventing Hans from watching future opponents past matches to get an idea for their playstyle?
@@LordZanas Thats the problem, in this high level chess there isnt such thing as a playstyle; also the thing that made this weird was that magnus has such a fucking obscure prep something he has never played before so there was no way niemann could know even know an idea of what magnus had for opening/midgame; unless.... well what the other guy said, there was a mole on magnus team which is actually the cause since soon after that some members of his team were actually fired. In the past year Hans had only lost 20 rating points despite only being able to challenge one player that had a higher rating than him. Having to only versus lower rated opponents for a whole year is essentially rating suicide and somehow he came away mostly unscathed. Gotta give him props.

He happened to practice the exact line that Magnus would play; even someone who doesn't have a great understanding of chess can sympathize with Magnus on how ridiculous that sounds.
It's a "boy who cried wolf" scenario. Hans cheated in the past, so people are going to believe he's cheating again. The always sunny episode making sense to me
People initially balked at the $100 million in damages that Niemann was demanding, but it makes sense in the context of Carlsen's own net worth which is like over $50 million right now in his early 30s, and could probably double over the rest of his professional career just through investments and market returns, etc. The argument goes that since Niemann beat Carlsen in such a public and high profile match, he has a credible claim to having been denied a similar career trajectory. It will be interesting to see what happens to him now as a cleared professional player WRT his baggage but at the very least he'll make the game interesting for a while
They would have settled at least 10-20 mil
No, it's just a case of demanding way more than you know you'd be entitled to in the hopes of claiming at least some small percentage of it.
