$50 Overhead - B737 Home Cockpit

  • I am making my own overhead. It is made from a Illustrator file printed on a very large sticker/foil (1x1,2 meters) and then cut into smaller pieces that are put on pieces of foamalux/plexiglas.
Cost of printing the sticker aprox. $50. Then add cost for switches (Depending on what you got laying around)
The Adobe Illustartor-file can be downloaded from my blog. buildaboeing.co...

Great idea using a piece of foam like this. I'll probably use it for my little build since I'm looking for something cheap and quick. I just got my Arduino to talk with FSX so now I just need to build the panels.

You can build your own expansion cards for the pokeys leds. You need one cheap chip called the ULN 2803 for every 8 leds. The chip switches the ground side of the led so you run your power to all the leds and then one wire back to the chip.

wow... this is looking amazing for being only printed... you could maybe do even lighting switches if you get a switch for 2 in/outputs and do a led circuit. Then put a Led behind the display for the switch and light it up D:

  • @elidreyer8485
    @elidreyer8485 8 років тому

With the led issue, you could add a separate transistor and power source for the leds.

I will paint a sheet of plexiglass grey and cut and engrave the lines onto it with laser cutting machine then the panels will be perfect. I just want to notice you that the file you gave us has overhead light label missing. circuit breaker ligt label is there but below that, a label is missing. For your information. Thanks so much.

Hi Mad great project on your cockpit.
I'm not sure if all the buttons are still work if you push them up to 100 times because material you wrote here foamalux/plexiglas looks like what germans call Styropor and its not a strong material.
Proberly it will broke verry fast ?
Maybe it is better to use blue or other colored plexiglas
so you can do some lights (led or something) on the background
and it will shine from the frontside of it and in dark rooms ?
I made on of these pannel for Falcon A.F on a F-16 Jet
and use blue plexiglas with a strength of 5 mm.
All the buttons i was build in these 5 mm plexiglas are still the same strength
as the time i was create and build these pannel.
My next Option is to line up some wires and LEDs to show the different buttonstates on a led when a button chance his status for *on* or *off* with green an red leds.
For control this things i use a ARCAZE USB-INTERFACE with 40 digital I/O-PINS and some analog output, and a ARDUINO MEGA 2560 Rev. 3 witch got up to 50 and more digital I/O-PINS with PWM-supported outputs for adjust the brightness and so on.
Here are the Weblinks to the Mainpages of Arduinoboards arduino.cc and Arcaze-USB-Interface wiki.simple-solutions.de
The last weblink for the Arcaze-USB-Interface some guys said that this one at last time was cheap to get in some Internetstores.

New to all of this, but reasonably handy. Am a general contractor with engineering background. Just in the pre-planning stages now. What are you using as an interface between the pokeys and the pc? Mobiflight? Just trying to get a better understanding of this series of hardware and software. Im considering arduino mega and mobiflight. Thoughts?

      Hi Aaron.
I only offer you stickers that you can use for building your own overhead instead of buying €500 worth of premade panels. Whichever way you go you still have to build them and interface them you self, unless you have around €4000 laying around for a plug'n'play version.

hello , I'm working on a similar project but I'm facing a problem , I only bought input cards , so I should be working on an aircraft that has warning messages on the EICAS unlike the 737 which you have to look at the overhead panel and see what is the problem , so I decided to go for the 747 because it has a perfect warning messages on the EICAS and I dont have to mound LEDs in my overhead panel and I dont have to buy a SIOC card , but I just need the B747 overhead panel stickers , cab you send them to me if you have them ?

hi mate ... is it not possible to use the LED extension board with pokeys? Looks like you can run multiple LEDs per output. It's available from flightsimparts -dot- eu.
Just starting my own cockpit build, so your videos is very helpful so far, thanks !

  • @yavijo8533

i like your solution of printing it different panels instead of just one simple layer. But ive improved it a little bit, because my print-supplier printed it on a transparent foil so i have decided to paint the letters on the anounciators white and coluered just the frame so i can put a small LED behind it. The contra is that i've lost my '3d look' a little bit. What do you think about this, and is it possible?
And theres another question, i know that you used prosim737 since the early idea of your project, but do you think that it's possible to do it with just fsuipc and pmdg? I can't spent to much money cause i'm a pupil and the real flying is not cheap. ;) So your DIY videos are the starter switch for my cockpit.

Switches are bought from eBay. They are simple on-off toggles (Or on-off-on). There is no simple manual for interfacing because it depends on the type if interfaec boards you use.

Build a Boeing thanks for replying! I'm keen to start on a diy project to build a few instrument panels.
Do you think you'd be interested (if you have the time) to do videos on how you interface them? (e.g. industry name of those switches, soldering the connections and programming)

How did you printed this? I mean, I want to make airbus overhead but did you printed the layout on A4, cutted out and attached it to your selfmade overhead?

I ordered at a professional print shop. See the blog for details buildaboeing.com/overhead

Very helpfull video! I've got one question: is this also possible for a A320 overhead panel and if so where can I download the files to print it out. I'm going to build a homecockpit as well. Thank you.

I have only done the 737 as I am making a 737. No plans for an Airbus.

    Hi,
can you provide the communication protocol between PoKeys56U and flight simulator?

    • @BuildaBoeing
      @BuildaBoeing  9 років тому

      Hi Davi.
It is handled by Prosim737 that has support for Pokeys (Among many other cards).
So it is (more or less) plug and play.
      /Peter

+Ryan Hi Ryan. No sorry. I only made the file. But you should easily be able to find i UK based company that can help you. Look on my webpage for printing details and then ask any semi-pro print-shop.
