Well they got it right for 2 of the 7 runners so if that deserves credit then good for them. Id say they missed it by miles but hey I only follow t&f for 363 days a year so might have missed something.
I remember this like it was yesterday. The post race interviewer told her she ran “fifty four five” and she wasn’t that impressed. She thought he meant 54.5secs. He had to explain that it was 50.45secs, basically one of the greatest run on grass in history.
That was amazing. I wasw there that day; one of my favourite sporting memories. Made the end of Easter traffic jams driving back to Melbourne that night worthwhile.
That straggler Lewis was going nowhere, so it was incredibly selfish to elbow Freeman in the straight. But Freeman didn't take her eye of the prize, maintained her rhythm, balance and composure and gunned down the leader right on the line. I'm glad this has been captured on film. Brilliant.
To win the Stawell Gift two years in a row is an outstanding performance and one that only a select few elite athletes has been able to replicate. She started so far back because it is a professional footrace with gambling, so handicapping procedures are in place. This just makes her back to back wins even more legendary. Cathy made the brillant run from scratch the previous year too in 1995, so her handicap was tougher the next year.Cathy at her prime before Atlanta Games the best track athlete
to win the stawell gift twice or 2 years in a row is a fix. dont be confused with talent. Why is it that TWO Aboriginal Athletes have done this in recent times?..Josh Ross and Cathy Freeman. Its not coincidence or talent. That's why 'handicapped' racing is a joke. FTR my bestie is Aboriginal and she agrees with me..
@@MrColdheat22 I believe it's because the Stawell Gift is a race that is gambled upon. Like horse racing, they handicap each runner in a way to make them all finish at the same time (on paper) thus making it able to be gambled on. Without the handicapping, some runners (and horses) would be unbackable. So whoever did the handicapping for this race nailed it (!) because she won by the tiniest of margins.
@@MrColdheat22 Yes as Thomas says the Stawell Gift is a handicap race. It's the top event of a very competitive series called the Victorian Athletics League. People bet on the results & the athletes compete for prize money. The handicaps make the events unpredictable, & therefore exciting.
Oh my god that's her best win by a mile that handicap was unreal superhuman no wonder she did what she did in the Olympics if I had a seen that race would have put my house on her
It is in a country town in Australia. We have a tradition of sports events at country fairs. This race is in a town called Stawell and is probably the most famous race. It was first held in 1878. People in the crowd bet on the races and there is prize money. The faster you are, the further back you start. It is called a handicap. There is an official handicapper who decides how far back, or in front each person starts based on their times and last races. It is a very important and serious job at the carnival. This is done for bicycle races as well.
Nakita Warahi: In Australia we have handicap events meetings and Stawell is our most famous having run every Easter since 1878. It started with local gold miners celebrating time off for easter. Races go for 3 days straight for qualifying, semis and finals. It's professional running because they run for cash prizes. Handicappers give runners a mark to start on based on present form and the crowd can place bets. What's great about that is an average runner can possibly beat a better one on his/her best day. Very exciting weekend and the crowd is very close to the athletes
I ran as a talent amateur for years - the people in the comments attributing malice to Lewis for the "shove" have never run a race in their lives. Racing incident, absolutely nothing in it.
It’s not persuasive to claim the shove was absolutely gratuitous. The runner in the green top was trying to pass the runner in the blue shirt, and to do so, had started to edge out to her right. She couldn’t have known Freeman was there till KF was right at her shoulder. When KF clipped her right arm from behind, the runner’s reaction wasn’t an act of deliberate malice, but simply a reflexive push to try to protect her space. No one was at fault there; it’s just the sort of jostling that can take place in a race, because these are runners, not mind readers.
Not a bad explanation Columbia, but I don't think too many people are buying it. It looked like a shove and unnecessary. Freeman showed great sportsmanship to not make anything of it, and great ability to win the race nevertheless.
Its the rules of professional running. It makes it challenging and exciting for both the athletes and the spectators. All the athletes are given marks according to thier ability. Fastest near the back and slowest near the front. Its a fantastic took to developing athletes.
professional racing. The crowd can place bets and if well handicapped the whole field should finish closely. On their best day a weaker athlete can beat a better one so it is exciting
In a 400 meter race the first 300 is relatively easy before the lactic acid starts having an influence in the last 100. The other runners didn't have to contend with that and still got beaten.
“Racist”? That race is a traditional “handicap” race, in which the starting positions are staggered out based on the individual racers’ previous records and current form. Freeman knew precisely the format of the race before she entered. No one made her compete in this race; she did so because she wanted to. To ascribe the format of the start to racism is ludicrous, and even stupid.
@@ColumbiaB yeah exactly, the handicap conditions are racist to give the white people a chance to win, look at that sad racist white lady give cathy an elbow as she breezed past her

What a wonderful run,,,Cathy , what a brilliant athlete,
Whomever set up the handicap was spot on.
