You might reserve judgement on that until you tried making something nice with inferior tools. Sure... it's easy to make a piece of crap with inexpensive tools. That's why everyone is doing it. But unless you want to be one of those people, expect to spend a lot of time and money. There are no shortcuts to quality, and frankly I think this "build a box" idea is catering to people who don't know any better

This is an AWSOME idea!!! Finally an actual high quality knife kit! As an aspiring knife maker myself, I love to see anything that encourages new people to get into the craft whether as a hobby or a buisness! I was recently teaching a friend of mine basic knifemaking techniques, and I actually had someone ask me "Why are you teaching people your techniques, won't they just end up being your competitors?" My only answer was "No! they become my peers!" All creative artists feed off each other, the more good makers, the more inspiration! The friend im working with now has been sketching tons in her spare time and she seems to have a flair for trailing point fighter designs, im incredibly excited to see her crafting skills catch up to her design skills!

I use a super fine stone, an industrial ceramic tile, and a full hardness untempered piece of drill rod roughed with 400 grit for a finishing steel. I can shave my face with every knife in my house and none of them are good quality. Don't press too hard or go too long or you will fold the edge over and be frustrated as to why the more you sharpen it, the duller it gets. Steel it every time you use it. This is what I taught while I was learning to gut hogs at a pace sometimes exceeding 300 per hour and it has served me well for almost 20 years now.

I thought the same thing and I also thought he looked like he lost weight. Hopefully it's just a "getting healthy" thing and not stress from going his own way.

I was just thinking about how you rarely make full tang knives (which I love) so this makes me happy :)

Will you make the grinding look so easy. Great job

    Looks nice! Thanks for sharing.
I've done this to a kit without a grinder. Took about 10 hours, not considering glue time. Lots a hand sanding... But it turned out well.
With a solid torch and a belt grinder, I'm sure it could have taken half that time.

Very nice. You guys are brilliant.. I like the fact that you are making it easy for people to get involved in forging and learning without a large investment. You both deserve the audience you have. One of the best on UA-cam! God Bless you both.
