  • The Gimball drone is surrounded by a spherical cage that separates its propellers from objects and people, allowing it to utilize insect-like flight methods such as bumping into things to adjust its trajectory. This makes it both safe and super easy to pilot. Doc North drops into Lasanne, Switzerland to talk to its creators in the lab where it was developed.
In The Making takes you behind the scenes of spectacular projects, people, and ideas while they are being created. Doc North travels the world to give viewers an inspirational look into what it takes to make scientific breakthroughs, create companies, and invent the future. Follow North to catch the next big thing while it’s still IN THE MAKING.

honestly i like drones, they provide a lot of useful applications, that being said i dont want one watching me unless its helping me, mainly because i dont like being watched

+mad thumbs I doubt, it would have to really getdeep inside and above of the propeller because propeller actually acts as a fan and blows the air downwards

Right off the top of my head I see immediate applications in disaster response scenarios. a) Send it into a mine shaft where the true structural integrity has not been assessed for a while or there has been a collapse and the safety guys need to look at it before sending people in, b) Burning building, going into areas where firefighters need to look where they can't, c) police remote tactical surveillance while clearing a building so TAC can move in, d) bridge and very-near structure inspections…on and on, the possibilities are endless, but I would begging by attending the Firefighter and Mine Safety tradeshows and demonstrating it.

This might be the first copter I can fly without destroying :) But all that added weight and drag from the framework has to take a major toll on performance. Bet it goes like mad when it's all stripped down. I don't know if having drones flown by unskilled pilots with no idea what they are doing is a good idea.

The real innovation is actually in the flight control algorithms which anyone can buy these days for about $20. All the mechanical contraptions have been done before. You can dress it up any way you want it, but it is still a coaxial vector control copter.

Glad you picked up on that! It's cool that it's so friendly, not cool that it can stalk you and report everything back into the cloud.. Fortunately the creators have good intentions with the uses of search and rescue, inspection, etc..

Only thing that is missing on the Gimball is waterproofing the components. on top of that everything is awesome, even a 7 year old would make it fly around the house not unless it can push small flower vase. hahaha. ^_^
