This Drone Wants You to Touch It

- The Gimball drone is surrounded by a spherical cage that separates its propellers from objects and people, allowing it to utilize insect-like flight methods such as bumping into things to adjust its trajectory. This makes it both safe and super easy to pilot. Doc North drops into Lasanne, Switzerland to talk to its creators in the lab where it was developed.
In The Making takes you behind the scenes of spectacular projects, people, and ideas while they are being created. Doc North travels the world to give viewers an inspirational look into what it takes to make scientific breakthroughs, create companies, and invent the future. Follow North to catch the next big thing while it’s still IN THE MAKING.

Awesome drone, we'd love to play with one in the office!
Send me one! :D How much is it?
FLY, YOU DRONES!
The engineers mind is a beautiful thing. I see the potential for this drone in the extreme sport sector. Cliff jumping Gimball!
Drones aren't bad it's the people behind the drone.
This could be use for a new sport, or to update quidith
Summer Shandy Blows
Brilliant
honestly i like drones, they provide a lot of useful applications, that being said i dont want one watching me unless its helping me, mainly because i dont like being watched
I'm so happy I'm in an engineering field. I know I can design these things, and help shape the future. I feel useful :)
It's been 7 years what have you got for us?

One person with long hair is going to get really pissed off when it gets wound up in it.
Oh, good point! Shave your head while you can!
+mad thumbs I doubt, it would have to really getdeep inside and above of the propeller because propeller actually acts as a fan and blows the air downwards
If it's crashing; does it stay up right? b.thumbs.redditmedia.com/xkOA-SQh1oLx9lBjmdVx-yJYpfHOocLZzSJx1Z1Wk5Q.jpg
I'd definitely buy that
Looks great!
And we started it few years ago when it was still Airburr!
interesting design.
Cool!
outsstanding
well i'm not sure if it could safe your life but its cool!!!
It could bump into people and guide them to get help, like a dog ;)
Right off the top of my head I see immediate applications in disaster response scenarios. a) Send it into a mine shaft where the true structural integrity has not been assessed for a while or there has been a collapse and the safety guys need to look at it before sending people in, b) Burning building, going into areas where firefighters need to look where they can't, c) police remote tactical surveillance while clearing a building so TAC can move in, d) bridge and very-near structure inspections…on and on, the possibilities are endless, but I would begging by attending the Firefighter and Mine Safety tradeshows and demonstrating it.
This might be the first copter I can fly without destroying :) But all that added weight and drag from the framework has to take a major toll on performance. Bet it goes like mad when it's all stripped down. I don't know if having drones flown by unskilled pilots with no idea what they are doing is a good idea.
Closest drone so far to the one that was in the show Inspector Gadget as a kid. I want one. How much
Great work sir... I'm so impressed.. actually im trying to make a MAV like this for my project work.. can you guide me up..? What will be its cost of manufacturing..
The real innovation is actually in the flight control algorithms which anyone can buy these days for about $20. All the mechanical contraptions have been done before. You can dress it up any way you want it, but it is still a coaxial vector control copter.
I wish I had one of those...
So, how fast can this be weaponized?
I wonder how much money in R and D went into that!
Pretty cool I do love my remote control helicopters!
nice
I want one.
Your fingers could probably go throgh :/ Nice robot dough!
How can I get one?
Just looking forward that frame to get stuck in coat stand .
r they being sold
The camera puts me off because youd be getting monitored constantly and that is kinda creepy. Its like having someon always watching you like a stalker or something.
Glad you picked up on that! It's cool that it's so friendly, not cool that it can stalk you and report everything back into the cloud.. Fortunately the creators have good intentions with the uses of search and rescue, inspection, etc..
i wouldn't expect anything less from a girl always bring the ugly side of things never let you 'us' enjoy anything cool you have to spoil it for everyone t.y. girls GOOD JOB (The camera puts me off because youd be getting monitored constantly and that is kinda creepy.) Yea bla bla bla.... YOU DON`T LIKE IT DON`T GO NEAR IT AND STOP RUIN IT FOR THE REST OF US GOT IT?
i need it
I honestly believe we have an irrational fear of drones.
Only thing that is missing on the Gimball is waterproofing the components. on top of that everything is awesome, even a 7 year old would make it fly around the house not unless it can push small flower vase. hahaha. ^_^
BEGIN - not begging
"We looked at what happens when flies fly into windows ... and they do not die." Next up, cars built like roaches.
this was in CoD Ghost
seems like caging only the props would make more sense. that way your camera view is unobstructed.
It's all fun and games till someone gets a prop to the face
Giant Snitch!
Holy shit, rest in peace my ears.
