- The widow of "Star Trek" actor Leonard Nimoy says he called in nurses to help him end his life when he died on Feb. 27, 2015. Nimoy, who famously played Spock, had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, an illness his wife, Susan Bay, characterized as "terrible" in an interview with Inside Edition. "You cannot catch your breath," Bay said, adding that Nimoy could barely do anything by the end. "He couldn't go out. For him to go from the parking lot to the movie theater, forget it." #InsideEdition
I remember when I was six years old (and a huge classic trek fan) I met him at a convention I was so nervous to meet him. When I got to the front of the line I was meaning to say I’m your biggest fan but I instead said you’re my biggest fan. I quickly realized what I said after he chuckled and said sorry. He stood up from his chair and shook my hand and said no son you’re right I am your biggest fan I came all the way here just to see you. It was for real one of the coolest moments of my life
That is such a great story. I was lucky enough to meet him once, and like you, found him a class act.
I don't understand this announcer saying he gave up smoking ☆☆ 3 decades ago in 2015 ☆☆ ???? That don't make sense ????
He was mine too. He is The only
Wow what a legend he was
RIP
He was a great man.
Today we have so much knowledge about smoking so why do it!??
Because life is stressful
@@junlee3515 then deal with the cause of your stress instead of smoking jfc
@@junlee3515 then go to a therapist it's way better and healthier than smoking
*ADDICTION*
@@malakai3524 dont do it. And u won't feel addict and try to quit
Live Long, And Prosper.
I gave up smoking in response to this, 7 years and going strong.
Even though inside edition is a news channel, i am very enertained
FonarovOfficial not news
R.I.P...Leonard Nimoy..... Mr Spock.... Live Long, And Prosper. Sadly Missed
my mum has COPD. absolute grim reality ill have to witness. itll get worse and worse.
Leonard was a great man, loved his acting in star trek!
It's a real shame, he seemed such a lovely guy and lot of fun. R.I.P.
To pass away on your own terms is a gift. It's good to know Mr. Nimoy was able to do just that. 😪
It's been 9 years since he died and my heart still hurts for Mrs. Nimoy's loss, I never got the chance to meet Mr. Nimoy, one thing I will always regret. As a fan of his since the first time I saw him, he will always be remembered as long as I live. God Bless his soul.
🤦🏻♀️DONT SMOKE OR THIS 🤦🏻♀️
Not for everyone. It depends on Gene's and other factors. It's better not to take such a huge risk though.
Luna, you might get it from breathing the air...perfumes, candles, air freshners...You breathe, you will never be exempt. Research.
@@catguthrie6264 True, but I'm sure cutting out smoking would reduce the risk significantly though
I'm very much against smoking
So technically Nimoy didn't die of COPD, but died of assisted suicide.
I kind of caught that too. California is a lot more lenient with that kind of thing, I think.
@@janchilton+ Still, it's a corruption of medicine. In the original oath of Hippocrates, you weren't admitted to be taught medicine unless you swore not to be involved in that sort of thing.
@@bonzodog67lizardking15 Then they need to change the pledge. Anybody who would not help a man laying there gasping for breath in agony who is dying anyway is heartless.
@@janchilton+ It's been changed alright, but that's unfortunate. Anytime someone dies, money and property change hands. So in the pre-hippocratic era, you had to wonder if someone paid more for your death than you paid for your recovery. When the doctor becomes a killer, you eventually get more than you bargained for.
RIP Leonard Nimoy Forever Remembered
I only know this man from Kingdom hearts, he will always be Xehanort to me
Nimoy died one month short of his 84th birthday. The report said he quit smoking cigarettes three decades ago after 50 years of the habit. So he began smoking when he was around four years old?
That's what I thought! What a weird thing for Inside Edition to say.
I googled it and his family said he started smoking at 17 and quit in 1985, so he smoked for 37 years.
Hello person scrolling threw the comments
Leonard Nimoy was The Voice of Sentinel Prime in Transformers
And Galvatron (G1) The Transformers: The Movie 1986
When I was still on Twitter, I followed him and towards the end, he begged us to stop smoking.
My dad never snoked in his life yet he died from borderline copd. His mother however was a heavy smoker.
He is good and I'm sorry about her lost
Leonerd Nimoy is my faveorite actor
Then learn to at least spell his NAME correctly woman! That's Leonard not "Leonerd". Also, "faveorite" is spelled favorite. Stay in school kid.
The Verbally Abusive Clown You mad bro why you mad bro?
He Lived Long, And Prospered. Legend.
We'll never forget you Uncle Leonard, your Legacy lives on. Star Trek was not Star Trek without you...🌟🌟🌟✨🙌💖
So this was assisted suicide?
it’s the nicotine that makes people addicted to it
Sheldon is going to freakout.
_”🖖🏻Live Long And Prosper”_
Love this video and how he died. I have COPD too, and it comforts me to know there is a way to relieve the end.
How???
You said he quit smoking 3 decades before he died in 2015. That's not decades
A decade is 10 years so that would be 30 years total.
He quit smoking in 1985.
Quick maths
Liam Pearson He died in 2015, he quit smoking 3 decades before that
He quit smoking when his daughter had a kid in 85-86. He tried quitting many times. He did kick the habit after he was aware of being a grandpa
I thought the same. That he quit in 2015.
I thought the immortal words were, "Peace, live long, and prosper".
It was a salute with a reply:
"Live long and prosper."
"Peace and long life."
And also:
"I/we come to serve."
"Your service honors us."
He was wealthy and 83, he accomplished that.
@@catguthrie6264 Also, he had a respected career as actor, photographer, writer and singer (that last one with some argument); also philanthropist.
The character he developed through 50 years inspired generations of real-life astronauts and scientists, and set an ethical standard we would wish more humans strived for.
Yep, he accomplished many things.
The government don't have the guts to ban tobacco, if they cared they would. But cigarettes bring in huge tax dollars.
Amen to that brother
No views and 3 likes makes sense
It was on the TV and then people looked it up and pressed like without watching the entire video.
She reminds me of Glenn Close.
I been smoking for 5 years but I’m barley stopping
Great man, great actor, great loss.
He will b, always mr Spock 🖖...a great an talented actor...r.i.p. Spock....God bless...
R.I.P SPOCK :(
I miss him. Gr8 actor!
'was a result of 50 years of smoking, which he'd given up 3 decades before he died'.... (at 82 years old)
so.. he was smoking from the age of 2?
37 years..not 50. what is wrong with reporters.
When you love someone, you don’t want them to die. That’s absolutely true. But the suffering ends and if they choose to end their life by assisted suicide, then that’s their choice. You may not like it, but your joy the one suffering. The older I get the more I understand that. You have to make your peace with other people’s choices..
83 years old when this legend died, 50 years of smoking which he quit 30 years prior, 83-50-30=3 i don't think so
i will never smoke.
Hard to think Leonard believed in being a purist, living pure but he felt wearing oxygen wasn't pure at all thus he felt it was better to be 💀
early HAHAHHAHA
Live Long and Proper..without cigarettes please
William Bell went to the alternate universe.
Live long and prosper 🖖💖
How did they not mention him as an actor to sentinel prime form transformer
In 2015 he die in 🏥 after the copd
Im glad the nurses helped put him out of his misery and let him die with dignity
So this deposed to SKARE me
Rest In Peace Spock!
3 decades you mean years
No, he stopped smoking when he was 50 or so. He was 80 when he died. He said in another video that he was an accomplished chain smoker all his life. Goes to show quitting isn't always that helpful.
@@janchilton at 50 all those years he smoked and smoked alot. He had COPD, then it was mild and undiagnosed. COPD does not happen overnight, unless you've had really bad physicians, it's impossible. I am a RN-RT...
rest easy sentinal
Just a coincidence but Susan Nimoy's voice is teensy similar to Kate Mulgrew.

He started smoking when he was 4 yrs. old huh? 0:37

Cigarettes lol
Did he say, He gave up smoking 3 decades before in 2015?
More or less, yes. He gave up smoking in the 80s, around the time he directed the whales' movie. Unfortunately, the damage of decades of very heavy smoking was done.
I think his quitting smoking gave him 30 years he wouldn't have had if he had continued doing it.
First
You're not first
I feel bad for him....
He was 83 years old, that's a nice long life.
When I heard that he died i yelled "i can't believe my ears" or his either!
they said she was his sister but in the film she said she was married to him
First to not be last
