Thanks for the work you do. You’re an invaluable resource and I constantly send people your way when they dismiss physical games viability from this generation. I feel the same way. I’ll move to PC after this generation if things are going all digital. Well, I guess that depends on how good my aging eyesight and reflexes are by then 😅
I had been done with Microsoft since the disastrous launch of the Xbox One with it requiring an online connection on startup to play physical games offline after the seventh generation. Sony had been slipping since the launch of the PlayStation 5 original model (not as bad as the PlayStation 3 at launch); with the slim model and now the PlayStation 5 Pro, I'm done with Sony after the ninth generation. It all comes down to Nintendo now, but that will eventually change. Sega would still be making consoles after the Dreamcast (and probably on the same level as Nintendo) if they didn't botch the launch of the Saturn outside of Japan. This is all on the console level. But yeah, the digital age is coming. And there's not much physical collectors can do to prevent it. Sad, but that's the reality.
Same. You've already got more than enough games to last a lifetime, and as emulation and translation efforts increase, import games are an entirely new market of experiences still to be tapped.
This video does an excellent job of covering the current issue of physical media in general. Personally, I won't be buying a PS6 or Switch 3 for reasons that have nothing to do with the product itself. People love to meme and make fun of Sony for not having games, but it's true that the few games Sony has don't justify such a high price for a console. However, I still buy them because it gives me a sense of ownership. I bought a PS4 and a PS5 because I love owning games. I can enjoy physical games however I want, and no one can take them away from me. If it wasn't for physical media, I would just pirate. I'm serious. The thought of consoles going all digital scares me. What's the point of owning a physical console if you can't own your games on it? It's basically a watered-down, restricted PC. The digital licensing model is cancerous, anti-consumer and encourages piracy. It's the reason people are cracking games and looking for DRM-free versions so they can use them however they please. In addition, the gaming industry is undergoing significant changes that I do not support. These changes include the use of "A" and "B" body types, censored cleavage, forced diversity, le strong empowered women who do not need men, and gender neutral pronouns. I don't need any of this in my video games. The games I buy and support are mostly from Japanese companies and developers, but even they started to include this kind of nonsense, which I find disappointing. It's all just so tiresome... Last but not least, you should definitely replay Resident Evil 4 (if it's the original version)
I decided this when I got my PS5 that it will be my last console. I also have recently decided what will be the Endgame for my collection because I cant keep collecting games forever because soon I will have too much and I dont have the room. I made up my mind that GTA 6 will be my last Physical game I buy. I Started collecting when I got GTA IV on PS3 so I think GTA 6 will be a good end point just so long as they release the whole of the single player physically on the disc or discs like they did with Red Dead 2. I still have some games between now and GTA 6 im interested in so its not over yet but It does feel good to finally have a definite end point.
I'm sharing the feeling. I have a mountain of PS4 games so I'm covered if I want to play physical & offline. If I'm pushed to go digital, yeah the PC is a no brainer, you can get free games (epic game store for ex), emulators and a lot of freedom. I wouldn't sell my PS1 games if I were you though ;) At least keep your favs.
My last is when they stop making disks or carts so switch 2 / ps6 it’s been a good run I’m young enough to enjoy 6 generations of systems and more so there’s that😅 why pay for something that’s not real? Idk that aspect just doesn’t click with me it’s why I can’t get invested in mobile games one day servers will shutdown or the app will be incompatible
Yeah, I am doing the same and will buy a new PC next. The xbox one, xbox series, PS5 are all disappointing in terms of what games are getting a physical release. I am not buying future consoles. I am selling my PS5 games and focussing on the PS3, PS4 and xbox 360 libraries. The difference between PS4 games and PS5 is so small that I don't feel I am missing much by buying and playing the amazing PS4 library for a lot of years to come.
Yeah i am also comfortable saying ps5 will be my last console gen. Will wait and see what happens with Nintendo after the next Nintendo console, i absolutely hate saying this but im also done with consoles. Will maintain my ps5 as long as possible. Maybe might even buy another launch version of ps5 in case something happens with my current ps5. I will also go digital. But i can guarantee i will never pay full price for games on PC as those are digital only and if its not physical, i cant justify paying full price for digital games as those are basically glorified long term rentals. Not evreyone wants to pirate games to "own them". Im not comfortable doing that. So PC elitists can kick bricks.
You're right. I amassed a huge library of digital downloads that I bought from Sony for the PS3. Now I can never access them again. Before PlayStation Now, there was a streaming service called _Onlive._ 3 years later I lost access to all the games I paid for, when the company went out of business. However, I have a Steam account I made in 2004 to run HL2. 20 years later I still have access and the ability to run all my games. And almost all of them are "backwards compatible." Gabe Newell has once promised that if Valve ever goes out of business, he'll make as many games as he can DRM free or at least able to run offline so we can keep everything. But he still hasn't delivered on HL3. Steam was janky when it first debuted, but I appreciated wanting to play a PC game and being able to download it immediately and not have to find a disc in my hoarder home and wait 30 minutes to install only to realize I am missing the last disc or CD Key. So it really depends on the stability and business practices of the company.

I agree with you, as long as there as physical copies, i will buy a console that works offline with those. Hopefully, that would be some way off in the near future.

For the most part what your asking for is digital games to become NFTs (Non-fungible tokens) Where you buy a game and each digital copy has it own code number on your digital library... That is the only way to make it where a game could be traded or sold on a digital market without digital copy abuse...
