I have practiced and taught Aikido for 57 years. I read all those comments bashing against this art. Please, attend a class. Ask for an application. Then you can describe how painful Aikido can be. Aikido was developed to establish peace. If you want to fight join a Boxing Club or a Muay Thai gym.
in March I (184cm,68kg,bodybuilder) was indeed lessoned in front of a supermarket. There was a brawl concerning a trolley with an about 40 year old woman with thick ugly specs. Since she only was 150 cm, she was an easy push and I pressed her 2 meters back and downwards with my hands on her shoulders. Then she enclosed my right wrist, a short aching, she went aside and I tumbled to the ground on the back, and that in my full black leathers. On the ground, I realised a sprain in my right arm making it useless for further combat. The specs lady saw my surprise and stretched from right to left over my chest, snatching for my left arm poising it in an awkward and helpless position I never saw before. I was completely under shock and could no longer move none of my four limbs. I flushed and even fainted.I only remember some passers by in the audience saying "Look at the arm of that lady, look at the arm of that girl, you ever saw this before?".After some minutes,we were finally separated by the security and the specs lady said:"Guess you never exspected me to know the Aikido, hunny."Believe me,my biceps Rms had no chance versus an Aikido application.

If she truly grasped the concept of Aikido, she (you too) would understand that you become aware of the people around you. If you are aware of yourself and those around you, you can avoid any confrontation at all. Defending is the same as attacking it is simply from a different perspective. In the instance where you are forced into confrontation you should be prepared; you should have total focus of mind&body always, so you have a clear mind to react accordingly without unnecessary thought.

I like the idea of not harming an enemy but still putting them down. Right now I take Ving Tsun/Wing Chun and I like it. I've been doing it for about 2 1/2 years and I want to know if aikido would be worth switching into.
Aikido is a lethal martial art that takes a bare minimum of 5 years of rigourous training to even remotely understand. It is not a fighting art. True practioners don't learn to "fight", they learn to terminate the confrontation immediately using a variety of techniques that will either snap bones, rip ligaments, or make someone land on their head. Aikido is not effective in a fight; it is effective for defense against a committed attack. Every art has its ups and downs.

@Gamezero05 if you can control your opponents wrist.. then unless they want it broken you can make them do almost anything you want.. question for you.. just curious.. have you ever been in a wrist lock/hold?
@Gamezero05 actually some moves don't take much effort to be effective.. it's all about using your opponents weight against themselves.. ofcourse this video is for show(they're going to give it that little extra) .. but trust me.. these moves do work when done correctly..
I have been training in Karate for the past three years and prior to that I had trained in Aikido for 2 years. If someone is grabbing your wrists or your shirt near your collar Aikido will be highly effective. Aikido is also an effective way of learning how to take a fall, however; Aikido is not practical for defending yourself in a common street attack.
@Gamezero05: you're right about one thing: you don't flip someone in the air with a wrist lock. The guy has a choice: either flipping or breaking his wrist. A friend of mine was training with a 4th dan at full speed, using the same technique as the last one on the video (shiho nage); he was "late" on his flipping. He had to stop aikido for 1 month. Flipping is a way to protect yourself.
@lopsided101 Damn true, still for who knows just aikido is a little more difficoult to control a low kick. that is really unlikely to happen, because most times the unaware assailant grabs or throws that ugly swing punch, but who knows. better to know multiple techs, and never forget that the first rule in a fight is AVOID THE FIGHT.
I saw a video that made the realization so clear to me. jabs dont exist in aikido, there is no jumping in and out, there is only defense against a war-like aggression of someone who is not a pro fighter, for aikido to work the other guy has to be angry or really want to grab you. so yes a balanced diet is required. any attack that doesn't have all their strength in it won't have enough momentum to redirect. Aikido was originally for samurai weapons, so its mostly for use against 4 charging guys.
@bboyflapps its mary j blige, i dont recall the exact name but the opening line is "we doint need no hateration" oh i think its callded "(baby) come dance with me"
@TheTerrorUforgot What good is Aikido if they can't break falls on concrete? :) Are Aikido students only going to use it when they are on mats? :) But really...as great as Aikido looks as a "demonstration martial art"...I have to question how useful it is in real life. When your attacker will be resisting big time. Might be the same size but usually larger.
@TheTerrorUforgot ...plus, how many Aikido students are in shape to last in a real fight? Very few. I think most underestimate the shape you have to be in to go a few rounds all out.
@naifgobory I don't know any true martial artists that WANT to be in a street fight. It's something we often practice for, but we don't want it to happen. Aikido is for peace. That doesn't mean we don't know how to hurt people, we just try not to. And you don't see aikido in competition because it's not a competitive art, we don't compete to see who is best, we try to teach everyone to achieve their potential in whatever they do.
@Gamezero05 I do agree with his legs flying in the air with such force.. but it is a video to get people interested.. I was stating that he was rolling with it.. like you said.. yes you're right it is done in class to avoid injury..

@AGC828 Yeah they don't have randori like Judo or rolling like BJJ, my grappling arts of choice. Without live sparring all you have are drills, which is not so great in a real fight. But breaking falls on concrete would hurt. Sure, they CAN do it, but who would want to? There is a reason they practice on mats and not wood or concrete.
When action like this are too prepared is just like in a film, in real fight is totally different,is in there where you really have to show your ability !!!
@arglenam also when you can't avoid gettin' into a real streetfight and you opponent is just a brawler and not a trained kick-boxer or something, the best way to survive is to be able to combine different arts and do whatever works best in any given moment of the attack... so anyone who says aikido is best, is just being obstinate. It's all in the mix ;) but it's true, aikido jointlocks really are priceless when someone tries to grab you.
Aikido resembles a hurricane calm in the middle like the eye of the storm and everything outside is rushing aound like the wind Aikido focus on using the opponents energy and redirecting against thenselves a fasinating martial art.
People need to keep in mind that this is only one small part of aikido. How many techniques were used in this video? Three or four of a multitude and not all techniques are done from grabs. Nice video, although I would have liked to see her deflect and counter a punch to take that big guy down and do something that would actually leave him laying on the sidewalk (she only threw him a few times, which wouldn't subdue him like that). It was a good display, though, and aikido does work like that.
@AJDevilx, I agree with you. Having practiced Karate 20 years ago, I've tried twice to learn Aikido but never really understood how would these techniques apply to real life. Sad because more and more people is learning this art today-
Oh! there are many techniques against punches and kicks as well. I'm an Aikibudo student and we also learn to kick and punch back so that we can destabilize our opponent for the fraction of a second it takes to take him off balance. Once you achieve this, you can apply a myriad of painful techniques.
I was floored and submitted by a woman half my size and half my weight. With applying aikido on only one joint of my four limbs she kept me completely paralized and half-fainted on the ground.Next day in the local papers I read; 6 inch head to toe black leathered woman bully tamed by tiny psychologist.
Do you have a link? Id say that there are three exploits in aikido as a tip. 1. No lower leg defense, constant kicks to the shin. 2. If you never put your weight behind a punch, half the techniques go away. Straight jabs and nothing powerful. You can win vs aikido with attrition. 3. Aikido is almost all wrist torsion, If you allowed to, where really thick gloves that cover your wrist. Have fun!
@denzuko1 its a movie, look better ull never see him actually fall on the road, they used mats for falling, then removed them and recorded guy on the ground holding hands.
Think I may have misunderstood your comment there, but I see your point now.The odds may be in favor for the big guy,but who knows,we can only guess what happens, nothing is ever cut in stone :)
Yeah it can, my teacher throws me around like that all the time when we spar, just pretend your opponents arm is the handle of a sword. I love Aikido :)
aikido is probably the only really effective defense on the street against anything up to (but not limited to) 4 opponents . my dad was attacked by 3 x 25 year olds and came away without a scratch and they were damaged.
Thanks you for your great criticism. I do admire this. Pls note this was an amateur movie just for amusing, NOT aimed to be an IDEAL one. Anyway, even in real situations, ideal forms sometimes lack their best forms to do. To do some defenses, one should not be always a master on the first place. Once again, thank you :->
@comradebashu lol, whatever you think man. Whether you think its girly or ineffective, its the best defensive martial art there is out there, and i like it better than most.
It seems to me that aikido is most effective against martial arts such as karate and taekwondo, which use more strikes that reach and thus give the aikidoka a better opportunity to counter. To be honest, boxing looks like one of the most difficult styles for aikido to be used against. I feel it can be done (maybe not for someone who's been training for only 3 years) if you're experienced enough in aikido. It comes down to the fighter and technique; all MAs have weaknesses.
That wasn't what I was implying. I am saying that an Aikido practitioner would have a disadvantage in a ring fight because of the rule sets in an MMA ring fight that an MMA fighter actually trains for. It is sport fighting, not "real" (for the lack of a better word) fighting. It would limit the Aikido fighter more. Aikido is for self defense. MMA is for sport. That said, I am making the assumption that that it is an MMA ring fight we are talking about here.
it will work, hence why people train in boxing wrestling muay thai, in sport AND in self defence, becuase they have proof it WILL work. a martial art which requires suprising one another just won't work mano e mano.
yes we are thinking the same i think, boxing is not just guys throwing puches its alot of speed and strengh and alot of teqnics, and still i cant see a aikido vs a boxer just watched other fighting arts against boxing which boxing won, and i wounder why there is no street fights of aikido in youtube ? maby couse no one can use it ? or why no fights in ring ? aikido vs boxing ? would love to see that :P But every body thinks diffrent for sure
@35503550 Morihei Ueshiba studied under Takeda Sokaku, the founder of Daito ryu. It's no stretch to suggest aikido was inspired by the techniques of the samurai.
Thanks for your reply. I do not at all think Aikido is a joke, No way! I know a thing or two about self defense and hand to hand combat. I know how effective Aikido is. But in this video a woman that size would have a very hard time defending herself against a powerful straight on attack if the man knows anything about balance he could hurt her very badly. I ofcourse wish no harm to her or any other woman.
@weisschr This is just a demonstration of Aikido techniques. In realty, that attacker would have had many broken bones from landing on the pavement. Go to a real Aikido dojo and have the teacher perform those same techniques on you. You would not be standing after the first one. Try any attack you like.
Thats kind of a silly thing for MMA guys to say. Many techniques derived from Japanese Jujitsu are in MMA wrestling (arm bar, reverse guilitine, etc.) and some of those are even spotted in Aikido. So saying its fake is in a way saying their own techniques are fake :P
He's right, human reaction time doesn't allow for the kung fu trapping akido wrist grabbing stuff when a person is throwing really punches and combinations. Maybe if they grab you by the sleeve or something, but if someon's trying to hit you for real, the movie stuff is not effective.
@Capuccinoisnotcoffee It would take decades for it to be even applicable. I suggested something else because it is interestingly hard to be good at it, let alone make it worthwhile.
I wouldn't describe boxing as incredibly technichal really. Aikido can be technichal in places, like yonkyo technique can be difficult to perfect. Boxing, I think, is more to do with strength and speed and as you said, endurance. Aikido isn't skill, it's just a little dedication paying off.
i totally agree my dad is great at it and i remember people started a fight with him in a pub they had bar stools and glass bottles as wepons he threw them round like the woman did in the video its awsome. But he wont teach me :(
Let's make it clear, Einstein--I was not talking about aikido's "principals" or philosophy; i was talking about it's claims for it's effectiveness in comparison with other martial arts. I have nothing against aikido but it IS untested because it's practitioners won't compete. I am aware of this. That's why we should be skeptical for it's claims of effectiveness until it is properly tested against other fighting styles. That was my point, I'm not out to disparage aikido as a martial art.
haters gonna hate. aikido is one of the martials that uses energy against someone

And you don't see aikido in competition because it's not a competitive art, we don't compete to see who is best, we try to teach everyone to achieve their potential in whatever they do.
very interesting, appreciate this.
@lopsided101 not a lot of people notice that aikido locks are in every martial art proving the validity
@Gamezero05 I do agree with his legs flying in the air with such force.. but it is a video to get people interested.. I was stating that he was rolling with it.. like you said.. yes you're right it is done in class to avoid injury..
ok when and where
Wow nice Kotehineri, and a part of Tenkai-Kotehineri......very kool.
is there such aikido tournament?
That´s the real Aikido!! - to fight without agression,- only with
self confidence, that she is superior against the attacker.
In March I (184cm,68kg,bodybuilder) was indeed lessoned in front of a supermarket. There was a brawl concerning a trolley with an about 40 year old woman with thick ugly specs. Since she only was 150 cm, she was an easy push and I pressed her 2 meters back and downwards
with my hands on her shoulders. I flushed and even fainted.I only remember some passers by in the audience saying "Look at the arm of that lady, look at the arm of that girl, you ever saw this before?".After some minutes,we were finally separated by the security and the specs lady said:"Guess you never exspected me to know the Aikido, hunny."Believe me,my biceps arms had no chance versus an Aikido application.
@@karinleder446That's impressive what that lady did to you,you look big!
@@chuckcollins2349 I wrote I am 184cm.That is 6 inch,I guess.
@@chuckcollins2349 Yes,but I couldn't match with this Aikido.
@@karinleder446 I hear you've gotten really huge at 220 when your pumped.could that lady still knock you out?
@AGC828 Yeah they don't have randori like Judo or rolling like BJJ, my grappling arts of choice. Without live sparring all you have are drills, which is not so great in a real fight.
But breaking falls on concrete would hurt. Sure, they CAN do it, but who would want to? There is a reason they practice on mats and not wood or concrete.
this looks so real!
How long have you been off your medicine?
i'm going to try to pick up the ladies like this. sooooo smooth.
When action like this are too prepared is just like in a film, in real fight is totally different,is in there where you really have to show your ability !!!
This video is awesome ! Guy can't take a hint NO MEANS NO ! LOL
@arglenam
also when you can't avoid gettin' into a real streetfight and you opponent is just a brawler and not a trained kick-boxer or something, the best way to survive is to be able to combine different arts and do whatever works best in any given moment of the attack...
so anyone who says aikido is best, is just being obstinate. It's all in the mix ;)
but it's true, aikido jointlocks really are priceless when someone tries to grab you.
That's what I'm talking about, baby! 10/10 🥋🥋🥋🥋🥋🥋🥋🥋🥋🥋
Is aikibudo the same as aikijutsu (aikido mixed with strikes)? I think the more you have in your arsenal - the better - but that's just my opinion.
Aikido resembles a hurricane calm in the middle like the eye of the storm and everything outside is rushing aound like the wind Aikido focus on using the opponents energy and redirecting against thenselves a fasinating martial art.
who's name is the female lead in the video?
@ANIMEGURL1227 Yeah i Checked out Grand Rapids it does look really nice thank you gonna leave the state iam in
People need to keep in mind that this is only one small part of aikido.
Sad because more and more people is learning this art today-
nicely set up moves by the'attacker' putting his hand out for her to grab every time. keep it in the dojo
I agree, good job
Oh! there are many techniques against punches and kicks as well. I'm an Aikibudo student and we also learn to kick and punch back so that we can destabilize our opponent for the fraction of a second it takes to take him off balance. Once you achieve this, you can apply a myriad of painful techniques.
I was floored and submitted by a woman half my size and half my weight. With applying aikido on only one joint of my four limbs she kept me completely paralized and half-fainted on the ground.Next day in the local papers I read;
6 inch head to toe black leathered woman bully tamed by tiny psychologist.
you could win if you know the right way to fight and defend yourself. even the opponent is big. he/she always have vital point. like eyes.
What's the music name ?
Hawt. What's her name?
@Downbeatoff I agree this is why we are supposed to control what we are doing so they can feel we can break them an arm but we don't have to do it.
Have fun!
@denzuko1 its a movie, look better ull never see him actually fall on the road, they used mats for falling, then removed them and recorded guy on the ground holding hands.
what is that song??????????????
@TheTerrorUforgot
Well, its either break some bones or have some bruises for breakfalling, I prefer my bones intact. The kotegaeshi is damn painful..
Ahahahahahah xDDDD I love the way she just leaves him on the floor! LIKE A BOSS!
whats that melody called
Made my day :P
Think I may have misunderstood your comment there, but I see your point now.The odds may be in favor for the big guy,but who knows,we can only guess what happens, nothing is ever cut in stone :)
Yeah it can, my teacher throws me around like that all the time when we spar, just pretend your opponents arm is the handle of a sword. I love Aikido :)
I love how all the attacks are typical Aikido attacks. ;)
aikido is probably the only really effective defense on the street against anything up to (but not limited to) 4 opponents .
my dad was attacked by 3 x 25 year olds and came away without a scratch and they were damaged.
It's a choreographed video, she was told where to walk and what to do.
i just started taking aikido classes a couple weeks ago this shit is no joke you can put anyone on the ground once you get good at it
Thanks you for your great criticism. I do admire this. Pls note this was an amateur movie just for amusing, NOT aimed to be an IDEAL one. Anyway, even in real situations, ideal forms sometimes lack their best forms to do. To do some defenses, one should not be always a master on the first place. Once again, thank you :->
It's a mix of Yoseikan aikido and Daito Ryu aiki-jujutsu and there's also weapon techniques of the Katori Shinto Ryu.
@comradebashu lol, whatever you think man. Whether you think its girly or ineffective, its the best defensive martial art there is out there, and i like it better than most.
song name?
I was impressed by perfect ukemi (受身:defensive fall) of the attcker.
@Downbeatoff it would be costly for the commercial to break somebody's arm...so it let be like that, at least we got the message...
@35503550 Aikido skills are inspired of samurai skills , but it's remixed to don't break legs
@superawesomejeff wise words! that's the very truth!
Greetings from Argentina
Oh my god...look at her phone. Was this video shot 1000 years ago? xD
She's kinda cute, haha
Her flawless "street" aikido makes her even cuter, lol!
was that nelly?
it will work, hence why people train in boxing wrestling muay thai, in sport AND in self defence, becuase they have proof it WILL work. a martial art which requires suprising one another just won't work mano e mano.
yes we are thinking the same i think, boxing is not just guys throwing puches its alot of speed and strengh and alot of teqnics, and still i cant see a aikido vs a boxer just watched other fighting arts against boxing which boxing won, and i wounder why there is no street fights of aikido in youtube ? maby couse no one can use it ? or why no fights in ring ? aikido vs boxing ? would love to see that :P But every body thinks diffrent for sure
Yes, she is so tough. The only thing that could stop her, is if the wind gusts up to 10mph or so.
That makes 2, thanks for joining.
Wow, I'm in love! haha
oh thank you for your explaination ! I just want to say that aikido isn't gay ! and it's not useless :)
i totally agree my dad is great at it and i remember people started a fight with him in a pub they had bar stools and glass bottles as wepons he threw them round like the woman did in the video its awsome.
