  • In this video I wanted to demonstrate all of the different cymbals I have that I'd consider "jazz rides". I've gone through several different (and maybe too many...) different ride cymbals over the years and at the moment I'm happy with this set that I have and wanted to share.

I just noticed rewatching this for like the 8th time, but those 1950’s and some 1960’s A zildjians actually are hand hammered not machine hammered. You can see a big shift in the sound around the 70’s which is also when the Istanbul factory for K zildjians shut down

    • @austinhass2638

For sure! The particular A Zildjian in this video was definitely machine hammered. Very uniform and consistent. Plus the stamp indicated it was not a K Zildjian.

My two 'jazz orientated' ride cymbals are an older Zildjian K 22" flat ride and a Meinl 'Vintage Pure' 22" light ride. Both have a lot of stick definition the Zildjian K has a higher pitched 'crystalline' sound and does not crash well vs the Meinl is darker and dryer and it does double as a crash. They provide interesting contrast in ride cymbal voices during passages in jazz tunes. Out of this group in the video I really like that Zildjian K light ride they are all nice though.

strongly advise you to look into the Zildjian ZBT ride, it gives you a spangalang that cannot be replicated

@@austinhass2638 You’ll never get that Tony Williams sound from budget cymbals like the ZBT line. Tony play Istanbul Mehmet cymbals , and they’re not a budget line, they’re hand crafted and expensive.

Thank you for presenting this. I have to tell you the miking of the cymbals were not very prominent. When you played the drums they over shadowed hearing the cymbal. so for me it was difficult to really hear just the sound of the cymbal. It may have been more beneficial just to play the cymbal by itself for most of the demonstrations and play a few crashes. I think the Zild. K light I liked the best. Again thank you for your presentation.

    • @austinhass2638

Hi Stephen, I did play the cymbals alone a little bit before including the full kit but maybe some more of cymbal alone would be helpful. I wanted to give some context for each cymbal. Appreciate the feedback. Thanks for watching!

very quiet sound, can't hear speech on a laptop at this volume. (probably need a lavalier or dedicated vocal mic when recording the whole session via the drumkit overheads or whatever it is you are doing here. the cymbals sound great, agreed, perhaps the vocal mic ducks when the overheads signal hits... dunno)

You're trying to record the sound of a cymbal you but can't even control the volume of your voice?
There are many UA-cam videos showing the sound of cymbals, but none offer such an underground introduction.
Finally take the mattress out of your mouth and speak more clearly!!!!
