DESCRIPTION
People ask us all the time what gauge we recommend for a given guitar, and the truth is, there's no one correct answer. String gauges depend way more on the player than they do on the guitar. That said, of course we have our favorite ways to set up different guitars for different purposes, so in this series, Scott is sharing his favorite string gauges for a couple of different types of guitars, and in this video he's going over his favorite strings for Les Paul guitars.

Thanks for watching everyone! A few quick notes for the comment section from the get-go: First, like I say in the video, this is just what I like. Everyone's different, and I'm not trying to suggest that you should play the same strings I do. Period. Second, in the video I think the LP sounds a little thinner as its just coming through my lavalier mic. Sounded fatter in the room. It's not the guitar, just the mic situation.
Is it the same with any other 24.75 inch scale, or is it only for Les Paul's?
This is just my opinion for LPs, I'd so all sorts of different things on different 24.75" scales, depending on what I'm feeling.
Anyone who had the patience to sit through the whole movie, please post the minutes when he actually came to the point related to the title. I'll come back again.
Never.

I bought my 2017 LP Standard Pro Plustop in August of 2018 and she's been my daily driver! I will be putting some new Elixars on her there tomorrow. First string change since I bought her! I will continue to play it till the wood rots! Then I'll restore it! Lol.
I use 09 to 42 on my les paul and its sound amazing
I use 9.5 DR ON PUSH PULL split coil classic 57,57+ 2004 gibson classic. I like that string feels but I hate when put new strings when guitar sounds metalic brushy regardles amp setting
I rock 10s on my Les Paul love them.
I dont have a les paul but 10s are ok
10-46, gotta get try the hybrid set? 50 on the bottom...
@@ShineDawg i don't like Hybrid, sometimes You need a balanced sound but You can't because of the difference of the strings. I mean, You want a darker sound and it's ok on your 4,5,6 but your 1,2,3 sound bright or the other way around. So ... I think Hybrid is just for players who actually know what they will play.
He recommends *Husky light* setup for true bloomy fat Les Paul sound. *Treble strings are light : 10, 13.5, 17*
*Bass strings are medium: 28, 38, 50*
It's a set of our strings, we have a line called Huskys that re in between our balanced and heavy bottom strings.
Thank you, I'll use that guage on my Epi Studio LP.
Would you have to make any adjustment to the trust rod?
@@yanndumont I would think not, but you might have to adjust your bridge. Intonation will probably be off.
@@Stringjoy If I put this combination of strings on my LP, will I need to perform a setup? It currently has a professional setup in e standard with 10-46
Thanks, I'm a les paul user, this helped a lot! Cheers
Glad to hear it!
10-46 seem to work best for me. I don't care for more thickness on the bottom 3 it would feel unbalanced. I experimented with that years ago. I like 11 to 49 on strats
i purchased a mij tokai goldtop les paul and had it set up with 10-46 strings!i almost sold it after a month or so ,couldnt bar an f chord very well ,just didnt play well. i decided to try a set of 9-42 gauge strings before maybe selling it.what a difference, just plays so much easier and the f chord is a lot easier to play now.glad i tried different strings as its a great guitar.
I’m thinking of putting 9-42 on mine too.
Hey! Great video!
I just picked up an Epiphone Les Paul Custom (Jerry Cantrell Signature)
I’m wondering what string gauge you’d recommend.
It’ll be in standard 70% of the time and maybe 30% of the time i’ll be a full step down or Drop C#.
I mainly just riff around with rock/classic rock/metal/punk tunes my living room.
Thanks in advance!
I have been stunned by the vintage sounding awesomeness of Dogal 1038 carbon steel on my custom black beauty style Fujigen LP.
I have a vintage LP I got from my dad's gf that is kinda wrecked and I think Imma try these you say cus I am seeking a vintage sound as it is an old rusty crusty guitar that has been in a closet for a long while. I'll fix it up and let's hope that vintage sound it good
I've used 10-48 on my Les Paul for years, but after a hand injury, I went to my 9-46 (which I used on 25 1/2 scale guitars), and it suits my needs.
That'll work great! LPs can handle lighter gauges really well, since they sound so full to begin with.
Love your Light strings on my LP!
Glad to hear it Elvis!
I just purchased an EC-1000 and restrung it with 10-46 which is how it's sold on the market but I am considering the hybrid 9-46 so I can have that smooth feel on the higher end. I just don't want to have to reset the innotation or anything like that.
Was that a hex core set you used on this? What would be the tonal differences of a round core set at the same gauge?
I knew this guy more than my neighbour now😂
Using your 11 - 14 - 20w - 28 - 38 - 50 for the one set in Standard E.
11 - 14 - 18w - 24w - 32 - 50 for the one in Open E.
Great video. Any chance you could do a simalar video for strats?
For sure! My tech has had my strat for the past 6 weeks, need to get that back from him first, but that's the plan!
I play extreme metal on Standard E/D/Db, I mostly play on a 25.5 sclae guitar and I'm thinking of getting an explorer(24.75 scale)for the same tunings what would you recommend? If it helps, the style of music I play is similar to Death,Bolt thrower and Dissection!
Thanks for you time.
Sure thing! I'd generally recommend something like: .011 - .014 - .018p - .030 - .040 - .052 to cover all your bases 👍
I used to play 13-56 on my Les Paul with no mods. It worked great for Bflat
Mine 10-52 and sounds great 😊👌
I typically defer to Billy and Jimmy and put light gauges on my LP but I dont go as light as they do. 9s are about as light as I can go. Anything lighter makes it feel like Im playing a toy guitar.
You can all skip until 2:50 to miss the verbosity
Thank you
I just realized I'm watching a guitar string manufacturer's opinion on best strings
Hello guy!! Have you tried using 09?
Does this count towards les paul body shapes made by different makers? Or only Epiphone Les Pauls? Thanks for all the info. love the science parts of it all.
Well the title says Les Paul style guitars so that means any
I am glad you said strap locks, because I dang near dropped my LP and it scared the 💩 outta me so I am gonna get strap locks today!!!
Would be interested in string choice vid for fanned fret guitars.
Great idea!
Hi, I just bought a used Gibson Custom Shop 2010 LP access. I haven't ever combined string sets (mediums top light bottom) , would you recommend this for a custom shop? I know Billy gibbons Played Mediums until a certain point in his career... I am intrigued by this set up but I've never experimented with gauges.
it all depends on what you're looking for! Hit me up directly and I'll be glad to dig into it a little deeper with you. I'm scott(at)stringjoy(dot)com
I just put some 48's on from a 46 and I think I will go back next set. It's chunky down there, I had a decent Clean Bass sound with the 46's. There is a big difference, If I only played Clean I would stick with the 48's or higher. I Had 52 11 on a Ibanez Super Strat for years, you get used to the extra work. But for playing (along with) 70's and 80's Metal there is too much Bottom.
That’s literally the best gauge for a les Paul. 10-13-17-28-38-48/49. I’ve thought about going slightly smaller, since some of my favorite les Paul players (Duane allman, Toy Caldwell) went as small as 10-38s! Duane was 10-13-15-26-34-38 and even weirder was toy who apparently used 11-13-17-22-24-36, which just felt weird. I watched this before going to get a 10-13-16-26-36-46 set and made me wonder if I should!? 10-48 just feels so perfect and balanced on a les Paul... We shall see
Hi from the future!
The reason I use what some call Hendrix gauge - 10-13-15-26-34-38 - is because for years I was moving around a lot, and all I had was an acoustic. I used to have top light/bottom heavy sets, so I could really thump out a rhythm on the bass end when playing alone (which was always!). Being stuck in that habit, standard bass strings on an electric are just too loud and boomy.
Though I've now got a Harley Benton Tele which has such a slinky feel, I think I may experiment with an 11 on the top E, with the rest staying the same. When I'm noodling about, the top E sounds a little weak right now, even with heavy bias towards the top end on the pickup angle.
I have a telecaster bridge pickup on my Les Paul style guitar.
I've been using 10-46 on my LP and find it sound a little too bright for me... would it be okay to move to 11-54? I usually play bendy stuffs in E standard (or sometimes drop D) tuning....
I tried to put D'Addario 10-46 strings on mine today and they snapped :(
I think there might've been something wrong with my technique of putting them on but I noticed that the original strings were a higher gauge.
@@herbalifeguru They should shouldn't snap actually...I have been playing on the DAddario 10-46 for quite long now...unlike the 9 gauge, the 10 gauge never snapped in my case, even with some really big bends...there could be some sharp edges on the nut or bridge of your guitar, or maybe u received a faulty set of strings.
@@SarangaBora I figured out it was my technique in putting them on.
LOL - love that guitar strap!
It's the classic Gibson strap! God knows how long I've had that thing...
Retro-awesome, indeed!
It looks ludicrous.
I'm looking at that string height and wondering how you deal with intonation up the neck.
Yo that’s what I’m saying hahaha
Can't find the husky light set anywhere on the site.
Hi can you talk about strings gauge on jazz master and the way to stop buzz
For sure! We'll add that to our list!
I own a fake Epi Les Paul (from D standard down) and for it I use 11, 14, 18, 36, 52, 70 (although I don’t play it much anymore). I used to use 10, 13, 17, 36, 52, 60 for standard to half a step down.
Those are some mighty heavy gauges!
Yeah they are. I’m a big Zakk fan and he used to use those gauges but they work perfect for me since I do a lot of down tuning.
Thought I recognized that! Yes your modification is actually way better balanced that the 60 Zakk set.
09-42 on Les Paul standard drop tuning down a half step from standard E tuning
Hi mate i have a les paul guitar should i buy d'adario 9-42?
@@sniperscrayt2441 Hey Snipe 😎 I would recommend dadario for a Les Paul as they give a more warm crunchy kind of tone and are used by many professional players around the world. I tried Ernie Ball once and noticed the difference in sound. Elixir are just the same as dadario but their strings are coated. There's no noticeable difference between sound quality dadario just feel nicer to play, then again that's my personal preference. Hope this helps ✌️
@@philipsmalley257 Thank you for your comment philip i will listen you mate 🤙
11-49 E standard
What about top wrapped tho?
You missed an opportunity to put a link to the product page on top of the description ;)
I knowwww I knowww, I just didn't want it to seem like it's just an advertisement, ya know?
9-42 due to arthritis(i'm 76) and having a bone removed in my fretting hand thumb joint.
I use 11-48 on both of my Les Paul's
Hey! Big fan here. I was wondering if you could make a video on the best string gauges for open C (CGCEGC) in a standard scale guitar. I've been experimenting with different gauges on my tele that's tuned that way and I can't seem to get the results I want. I'm actually contemplating just buying a baritone and tuning it to C, which would be another interesting topic by the way.
For sure! It's on our list.
Great! Subscribed and looking forward to that one.
👍
Can anybody tell me what sort of strings Les Paul used during the 1950s on all his pop hits with Mary Ford?
can I use .13 on LP? It could bend the guitar neck?
Check out Lee Malia's set of strings gauge - he's a Les Paul guy (and have his own Epi signatures : LP, RD, and Explorer) and has .80 on the low E for all of his axe
I have an epiphone les paul standard strung wiv 12's in e flat the neck is a wee bit bowed but it plays fine and sounds phat as hell. How do u get the poker chip off of a les paul?
What do you mean by "poker chip"?
Stringjoy the plastic circle around the toggle switch
Oh, it's just glued on. You can wedge it off if you like.
Stringjoy would that ruin the finish?
It didn't on mine, but your mileage may vary.
I use 10-46 on LP's and Strats. I tried 11's on both many years ago and didn't like the sound. Played 9's in my youth and couldn't possibly use them now. I like my guitar strings to fight back a bit when I bend strings...I don't like a real squishy feel. I do like 11's on Gretch's as they seem to bring them to life....
I prefer the Stringjoy balanced 10.5 sets on my LPs and 24.75” scale guitars.
Good choice!
Just recently put a set of 12s on mine, and it is glorious!! It actually seemed to tighten up the bottom end a lot, and sounds more focused in the mids. Definitely had to raise the action though.
That’s pretty heavy
The higher the gauge, the lower the action you want to go. That's what my luthier said.
10, 13.5, 17, 28, 38, 50
👌
Blah blah blah - look at the 1" action on that guitar! Nice.
set up for slide maybe, it's strange lol
10-52's tuned a half step down
Jesus that bridge hight🗿 coming from a guy who plays a 83' Les Paul with an ABR-1, the bridge on that epi is like 3 times the hight lol
Hahaha, yeah high action isn't for everyone.
Wow buddy don’t forget to come up for Air 🤣
I'm new and an absolute noob I have the husky light strings and I'm not sure which gauge goes where on the neck (e,a,d,g,b,a) total noob question I know
just dont get that at all, never understood light 9-46 or 10-52! for me lighter in the bass, heavier trebles eg 11, 14, 18, 26, 36, 47, or even 11, 13, 15, 22, 30, 40. or the hendrix gauge or thomastik power brights 10s or 11s
Do what works for you.
It depends on what feel you like... On any guitar. But isn't Jim Lill just waiting around the corner ready to tear all this apart? Not that I believe much of what he carries on with...
Isn’t that like asking what’s the best color for a Les Paul?
9/12/15/24/32/42
10s are best IMO
9-42 GHS Boomers work for me just fine.
Nothing wrong with that, I used to play GHS myself back before I started making strings. They do great work.
Best strings for a Les Paul are user specific. What one person likes another may not. Such as Billy Gibbons using 7's or 8's. He gets what he wants out of them. I think we could all agree he gets an excellent sound out of them as well. I use 9's and my Brother uses 10's, my father uses 8's as he is much older now and cannot press the strings like he used to do when playing in his band 20 or 30 years ago, so it's a very personal thing.
Sure, we say as much in the video. These are just my picks.
Hi, HELP I do not know what to do, I have a lespaul, and I use it in Drop C, I used caliber 12-56 (ernieball) to get more tension, but they sound very dark, it does not have any shine and that sounds horrible, now I use 11-50 ( d'addario) and I greatly improve the tone, it sounds bright and comfortable, but the strings are very FLOOPY :( there is the dilemma
Hey Lucas, no problem! Our Drop Tune 11.5 set is going to be perfect for you. Here's the link for ya: www.stringjoy.com/guitarstrings/strings/electric-guitar-strings/drop-11-5-gauge-electric-guitar-strings/
Stringjoy but the 56 or + gauge set, sound horrible and dark :/
Just because Ernie Balls .056s sound like that does not mean that ours do, or will.
Stringjoy
then you are my last hope, I will prove it, my situation is very frustrating😩
Get some strings brother, they'll treat you right.
...for me,for me,for me...for me,for me,for me...
Too heavy for me. 70's hard rock bends with a Les Paul and a Marshall are best with 9's. Also vibrato is better with 9's. Just my opinion.
A les paul without a poker chip looks funny to me
I don't care what guitar I'm playing, as long as I'm using the number 1 strings in the world, Stringjoy.
I kinda like using 11-50 on my LP
Never a bad idea!
I use super slinky on all my les pauls and all my guitars best strings imop
agree
Is it me or does the action on that guitar look Way High
Guys, pls don't play L.P's with the ff combined: Crazy aggressive picking, super thicc strings and 1/2" high(from the 12th fret) action. I did this(because it's my preferred setup) and the headstock popped and flew at my face. It was given to me by a pal, and I had to replace the neck with an Epiphone(I also had to change the logo), cuz it would be a shame to show a friend that I broke his gift w/in 2 days.
Curious why you had the action 1/2" high?
@@Stringjoy I have 4 reasons:
1.) Thick callouses and strong fingers. I can't feel the strings on my left hand when they're low and too thin. Though I play .09's, I break them more than the usual player can.
2.) My right hand picks as hard and as blindly as possible. thin gauges break from my coin, custom thumb picks, even my bare index finger.
3.) The bell-like tone I love. the bass rings strong and my coin and custom silver thumb picks makes the plain strings chime, so it fits my sound best.
4.) Tension. I adjust my guitars to make sure the tension is not too tight or too loose. So I raise action as to make sure that when travelling, or just playing, my neck and string don't break at a sudden movement.
Oh that all makes perfect sense, but none of it has to do with the action, just the gauge. When you adjust for a heavier gauge, you can still adjust your action (and truss rod) to have close to normal string height.
10's
Ernie balls or nothing g lol
Title should be "What Are the Best Guitar String Gauges for Les Paul Style Guitars" You don't talk about different strings. You only talk about the different gauges.
I think you should be a Gibson Les Paul instead of a Epiphone Les Paul there's a difference trust me I have both
9s, anything heavier hurts too much, anything lighter and the strings fall off the side of the neck.
I can barely feel anything under 11s :(
@@RC-bs6eb Yeah. 10s are OK, better is 9s on the top three, tens on the bottom three. Apparently tens have more punch so are better for chords, 9s nice and soft to bend.
Also for crazy train, the stiffer A string makes the guitaring easier. I keep getting my pick stuk!
@@zzebowa hybrids 0.9 - 46 are fine?
I had to listen to 3 1/2 minutes of you rambling before you mentioned a string size. Once you did that I was gone.
Video starts at 2:00 after his unwarranted life story
Damn why is your action so high lmao
10-46 Ernie Ball. Thank me later...
I'm a beginner so when you say 10 gauge what does the 46 mean. I'm a beginner so sorry in advance for a stupid question.
Anthony Vaccari you’ve said it correctly my friend, it’s a string gauge from 10 being the high E string and 46 being the low E string. 😃
Was that a 5 minute explanation given in 30 mins? Geez
This video reminded me just how sterile and lacking epiphone LPs sound
You Trying to compare an Apple phone to an American Les Paul studio it’s going to be absolutely totally different sounds I hope people don’t take your advice

Hahahaha I need a ticker at the bottom of the screen in the future.
Wait a sec, anytime the word “the” is used it means YOU??
What in the hell!!!
Too much intro im sorry. GTG
absolutley pointless
best strings for les paul?
what is the best pizza then?
stefan babic no pizza is the best pizza isn't it the same? Lol...
agree with that
there's no answer of which gauge we should use and which brand we should rock on.
users have to try all of them and find what they love.
if someone never try and looking for the best settings on youtube, he'll never get a good tone forever I think.
10 or 11 pure nickel. End of the discussion.
I'm not personally a big fan of Pure Nickel strings on Les Pauls. I think the humbuckers already make it so dark and the Pure Nickel strings just make it even darker. But that's just me, I'm also a P90 guy generally so there's that.
Too much talking
Jes what a load of crap
God...Americans waffle. 😣🙄
classic example of a guy who rarely gigs- can't handle the pressure or potential rejection. Second effort? Call yourself an expert and podcast. I don't find your opinion helpful at all. You lost me at your 3rd 5-dollar buzzword. Don't listen to this guy. Try several and decide for yourself
Based on the fact that I am over a minute into the video and you havent mentioned one brand of strings, im done. Youre annoying dude, get to the point
Hey Amy, we're a guitar string manufacturer/brand ourselves so the video is definitely not a discussion of all the brands of guitar strings out there, that would be counterproductive, it's all about our preferred custom gauges for Les Pauls.
You speak too much.
