    Sarah was criticized plenty by jazz purists for singing songs like this, but I always loved Sarah for being different. She sang all kinds of music from jazz to Brazillian, to Pop, to Broadway, to poems of Pope John Paul put to music, and even spirituals, and she did them all.... divinely. Perhaps that is why she was called The Divine One.

    In 1981, Sarah recorded a whole album of Beatles' hits called The Songs of the Beatles. "Get Back" -"And I Love Her" - "Eleanor Rigby" - "The Fool on the Hill" - "You Never Give Me Your Money" - "Come Together" - "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" - "Blackbird" - "Something" (George Harrison) - "Here, There and Everywhere" - "The Long and Winding Road" - "Yesterday" - "Hey Jude" -
    I own the LP and still play it on my Zenith-Allegro Console Stereo.

    Since when is swaying to the music "shaking violently". Your comments are beyond ridiculous. Does she need to be standing still like a statue to prove that's shes sober. Its is obvious to anyone with rhythm and at least one good eye that Sarah was moving with the music. Its a shame people can't enjoy great music without posting nonsense comments.

      Ella Fitzgerald's voice stayed the same?! You know nothing about her if you make such an ignorant comment. Compare Ella's voice during her days with Chick Webb's band (on such recordings as "A-Tisket A-Tasket") to the voice she had on tne Andy Williams show singing "Lover Man" in the late 60's - by the late 1950's/early 1960's Ella was at the pinnacle of her vocal powers. "stays the same" my ass

    The camera had to close in fast on Sarah b/c her arms were shaking so violently. No one ever mentions about Sarah Vaughan's extensive drug habit in the 1960's with all that's been said about Billie Holiday's drug use. Sarah was known in private circles for spending thousands on marijuana and cocaine back in the day. That her drug use never affected her vocals is nothing short of a miracle as one can witness the damage it did to Billie Holiday. Again, you can see Sarah is shaking violently.

    • @wgenetrotter4101
      @wgenetrotter4101 6 років тому +7

      To the person that suggesting that Miss Vaughn was under the influence of drugs during this performance because of the movement of her arms, is totally off if you have ever seen her live performances even from her early days she always moved her arms that's basically how she danced and kept rhythm while singing, check out some of her other video footage and you'll see what I'm talking about it's really sad that something so innocent could be misconstrued as a negative thing and even attributed to drug use, I have read of her own account, that she got high, but to suggest that her arms were violently shaking is ridiculous, and I know that the comment was posted 6 years ago I just saw it, and as a devoted and appreciative fan of the great late Miss Sarah Vaughan I couldn't help but to comment, no hard feelings to anyone, it just bugs me when people don't know what they're talking about. Peace

    I'm sure fans of Ella Fitzgerald will have something to say about that. No one has won more awards or sold more records in the field of traditional vocal jazz than Ella. Sarah may have a wider range, but her interpretations of some songs leave much to be desired (i.e. wildly changing the melodies and chords of many songs) whereas Ella did not stray too far from the melody. It is this reason Ella's "Songbook" series from the 1950's and '60s are still definitive today. Sarah didn't come close.

      There is one fact that until now cannot be denied, that Sarah Vaughan is one of the best in front of all jazz vocalists for vocals. And that's what made her so famous. Yes, actually the singer is identified by voice, right? and that important point has been owned by Sarah Vaughan. Ella herself on one occasion praised the vocals of Sarah Vaughan.
