Hi, I'm Marco Meatball, a former pro opera singer, turned voice actor, turned UA-camr. I grew up loving video games and video game music after first discovering them when I was 7 years old. Since then, I have lived and breathed all things video games. About League of Legends:
League of Legends (LoL), commonly referred to as League, is a 2009 multiplayer online battle arena video game developed and published by Riot Games. Inspired by Defense of the Ancients, a custom map for Warcraft III, Riot's founders sought to develop a stand-alone game in the same genre. League of Legends is the world's largest esport, with an international competitive scene consisting of multiple regional leagues; they culminate in an annual League of Legends World Championship. Domestic and international events have been broadcast on livestreaming websites such as Twitch, UA-cam, Bilibili, and on cable television sports channel ESPN.

Since they mentioned swain a couple times in the diary, i highly recommend listening to his theme, it’s one of my favorites personally even if it is a little old (it doesn’t help he’s one of my most played characters)

Your smile at 1:31 said it all. You knew what you had found, this theme is an excellent demonstration of telling someone's story without anything but music. Briar's theme is gold
Use of distortion as the transition between the playful and then horror themed side, to me, implies an involuntary change. Distortion and dissonance in that style is usually something we avoid, not something we want.
I wouldn't use a distortion transition like that if I were trying to imply a trap or deception.
This reads more like someone with a monster inside...that sometimes escapes.

I find that (as a horror game lover lol) Briar's theme has really strong horror game chase music vibes, with the drums actingly almost like pounding footsteps as she chases after you.
Briar is an incredible danger to every living thing around her, but she doesn't see it that way. As far as she's concerned, there are friends, and food
Briar's character is all about those 0 to 100 switches, one second she is adorable and goofy, the next she's going berserk on the nearest enemy, her gameplay is all about getting a large damage amp in exchange for self-control, this basically locks her to jungle
It's funny that you call her royalty, because Briar is the daughter of Vlad (well, technically he created her with blood magic, but he is her progenitor nonetheless), who in turn is Viego's uncle (or, great uncle, the exact age difference between the two is never specified). So in a way, yes, Briar has royal blood in her.
Loved Briar's theme ever since I heard it within her cell in the client. (We had a bit of a clickable adventure in the League app, changed daily leading up to her release, in the end she jumpscared us.) There was a guard, I'd assume, whistling the melody of the violin (heard at the end of the cinematic). Her whole theme is so much better than I thought, with the abrupt changes in playful/threatening tone. My favorite part is around 9:00 (of your video) when the strings gradually get more intense, idk how to describe it but that build-up is so good.
i don't know if you meant it that way, but i liked saying she was like jekyll and hyde because just like with the original jekyll and hyde (as portrayed in the book), she does not have a split personality. just like jekyll and hyde, it's not about some different personality taking over, but about losing any form of inhibition and control. in jekyll and hyde, it was just about jekyll wanting to experience life outside his well defined life as a doctor, so he made a potion that changed his form and loosened his inhibitions so that he could just do what the hell he wants. and briar is similar. if she loosens the hemolith, she isn't gone, she just looses any inhibition to reign in her hunger. but if you hear her voicelines in game, she is definetly still there, just a lot more aggressive.
I didn't notice this the first time but if you listen a little bit after the first drop while the violin is playing and everything is relatively calmer you hear a short snippet of the lower toned instrument that they used during the drop itself like the hunger is trying to reach out again but its restrained this time (very cool) (little after 4:41 in this video)
This new format with much more discussion on interpretation and where you are essentially pointing things out and sharing with us the motivations behind certain instrumental tactics is so cool. It feels like a college music class almost, which I'm super into.

I'd love to see your analysis on Xayah and Rakan's theme. You always have such good analysis when it comes to a theme trying to represent two ideas (or individuals) like Kindred, Kayle & Morgana, and then this with Briar. Rakan is my main so I'd absolutely love to see it eventually!

That is why I love watching ur videos and why im so glad I got to learn so much more about music from you. That is what i love the most about music is the emotions we feel when we listen. I don't care if a song is good or bad or poorly written and in todays world there so much of "oh this artist is trash" or "that artist sucks" but dont give any criticism like they say those things just because they dont like their music really urks me, so hearing you say that was so awesome because thats the exact same way I feel. That is the coolest thing to me hearing different peoples takes on the same song and seeing how it differs from person to person because of their experiences, and thats why I love hearing your takes on music. So thank you for sharing all these moments of listening to music with us and showing me personally what music can be.

It strays away from Riot's usual elements and is basically a pop-punk song with lyrics rather than a background theme.
The message is high-energy maniacy, and it definitely delivers.
I hadn't actually looked into the character yet (VERY casual LoL player, mostly ARAM and TFT) and had fun learning alongside you. Looks like she started Hyde and discovered Jekyl. Fun reversal. Very fun theme.
The most jackel and hyde character in league so far. I find her very interesting because she is a creature born and molded by a single drop of blood from blood magic. A creature created for killing but in time grew a consciousness.
Her theme reminds me of Electro's theme from The Amazing Spiderman 2.
This innocent, beautiful melody building into a powerful, distorded yet epic sound. I love the emotions it carries.

I found the theme "Fun" on both ends, and I think that represents her a lot too, both of her sides have 'fun' in their own way.

The interesting thing about these themes is actually that they don't HAVE to fit the specific character they're written for. They can also fit other characters in other media, even. This particular theme - which juxtaposes curiousity and predatory hunger, self-restraint and the urge to devour, is something that a lot of other characters might have, though probably not as closely and abruptly conjoined.
The best thing in this theme, having listened to it many times (including your video) is that it feels like, as the theme goes on, the two aspects become more integrated. The piano seems to represent her innocence and curiousity, while the high strings seem to represent her intellect and will, with, of course, the drums and low strings representing her hunger. The first time we hear the violin, it's such a rending sound - the sense of being dragged along, out of control, overpowered by oneself. Then we have the sort of relief and strength after the drums fade, briefly... Followed by, if not a unity, at least a sense that the high strings have responded to the low ones, working together while still dragged along. But there's still a sort of fear and anxiety as the hunger wells. And, at the end, it seems almost like the violins DRIVE the drums - not having leashed them, not having overpowered them, but having directed them in better accordance with her will.
With briar they didn't seem too sure if they want to actually make her a little girl.
Her in game model looks like an adult but her splash art looks much more childlike.
So she's got bits of the "horror movie little girl" in her but also things that don't match up with that.
They've said they don't want her to be a little girl. I think the splash art is just based on an older version of the character, before her design was finalised.

the way i would describe briar is that she is an "until" character oppose to an "unless"
some character are "good" unless you hurt them, you hurt someone they live, you are against their motives.
briar is someone that could be your friend, she could be nice, she definitely would behave...until she gets hungry
Loved the diatribe on context and musical storytelling! I’d say that the music doesn’t have to stand on its own, but rather when you *do* know Briar and her story the musical storytelling allows us to understand that story to a deeper level! It’s like an amplifier.
one i recomend and love is pyke theme, u cann feel the "hunt" besides that u can feel the calm before the stor of voices in his head telling him to hunt again

what i like to consider briar's music based on her Isolation, and her two personalities fighting aganist each other constantly, causing her to realize that shes a person and that theres stuff in the world other than just mindless Violence and Hunger, like the janitor person she thought was trying to escape with her, she managed to reign back in by herself.

Something to note, the splash art and the in game model appear to be different ages. This somewhat complicates the visual element of the story telling.
I'm fairly certain, that being a half-sentient blood-frenzied killing machine counts as troubled past...
Love Briar's theme & overall lore. In an unrelated note, I would love to see you react to an artist named "Nathan Wagner".
An interesting part I've noticed about briars theme is that parts of it are similar to Urgots theme (at least the parts with the heavy metal and the choirs). Also, keep in mind that both of them are technically Noxians who were imprisoned, maybe that has something to do with it being similar.
i would also love to see you listen to irelias theme. I think her story and path in life is deeply reflected in her theme. Its one of my favorite themes

The way I felt about this music was mostly... like 2 separate different beings one innocent and the other malevolent were slowly merging until they lost track where one begins and the other ends. I Know nothing about Briar tbf atm and video is at 10:34 :D
