Great list so far. I've only had the opportunity to try a couple of these roasters myself, but I'm happy to see Father's placement, as a multi-roaster near me has started carrying their beans. I'm looking forward to trying them, and for part 2 of this list, as the other roaster I've tried is featured. Thanks for putting these together. It's really a great resource for finding new and interesting roasters 🙏
Of course, it's probably our video to put together, to be honest. We understand it's a subjective list, and our preferences won't be the same as everyone else, but we're glad it can be a helpful resource as well. Cheers ☕️
That’s probably the best pronunciation of Leuchtfeuer I’ve heard from non natives
We'll take this as the win of the day! 😂
Thanks for the first part, I almost agree will all! LF bad experience for me (just tested them these two months and awful) and April... I agree he sells great producers coffee, he is an example of coffee philosophy and all the world related but I have never tasted any that has impacted me at all. I have tried several origins and processes (my preference is washed, and the best for me Yirgacheffe) and always felt something was missing in the coffee. Thanks again for all and looking forward to your second list!
If there's one coffee roasters' position we'd change from this first part, it'd be Leuchtfeuer. Our COTM experience wasn't great, and it sounds like that's generally the profile they've opted for since our first few sets of reviews.
As far as April goes, we've had a nice run of coffees from them. In a lot of ways, we similarities to Tim Wendelboe in that you have a pretty good (and often safe) idea of what to expect. It's doubtful we'll have something that blows us away, but we'll get "solid" results more often than not.
Pt. II will definitely be a lot more controversial 😅
I’m curious what your view is… When it comes to a cup of exceptional coffee… What influences the cup most? The sourced green coffee? The roaster? The brewing process? Can an exceptional roaster elevate an average coffee? Is the inverse true? When we find a coffee that we love, who is most likely the hero in the equation? I suspect it is all of them to some degree. But do you think there is one variable that impacts the outcome more than the others?
This is an excellent question and one I took some time to think about. This response is primarily anecdotal.
Would imagine it starts at the top with the green being the most important. Like cooking, quality ingredients are going to help the foundation fail or succeed. That's why producers are the most important part in this. From there, it is definitely the roaster. They can work magic with average green (to a certain extent) but also underperform with quality green (which we see more often). Last is definitely the brewing process. A 3k grinder with the perfect water chemical balance and the perfect extraction still isn't going to fix a poorly roasted 84 coffee.
The producers are the heroes, and maybe we don't say that enough, but they are. The roasters we *usually* rate high are the ones that invest in and promote those producers as well.
@@CoffeeReviews Wow. Simply wow. Amazing reply. I'm taking your words and incorporating them into my coffee worldview! I had a feeling you'd have good wisdom on that topic. And, saying your answer is anecdotal, shows amazing humility. Thankful to you sir.
Curious if you’re thinking of doing and Asian coffee roaster list… wonder where roasters like gout & co and Wes-ngopi would end up…
A 4k Asian roaster tier list would be up next 🙂
The mame mention! A local cafe in Toronto stocked a ton of their (including high end) beans
Told ya 😉 They're definitely worth a shot though, we'd definitely be trying more if they were available to us
You got to try Sumo roasters from Ireland.
We do have one Sumo review on the channel and have had opportunities to get more (both at a coffee shop in Vancouver and from Airworks) but, they *really* love their processed coffees. It's been hard finding stuff from them we think we'd enjoy. Hoping next time we get to order from them, they might have something a little less heavy
Stopped at Manhatten, such a cliffhanger
It genuinely just happened that way. 13 alphabetically 😅
Oh yeah!
☕️☕️
I'd like to see best coffee roaster in each country based on your experience. I've been curious about Germany lately as I lived there for 5 years, but dont have much experience with them
Think that's something we could do in the future. Think we have enough familiarity with a majority of these countries to pick a favorite from each. Will think on ways of how we might go about that. Cheers ☕️
@@CoffeeReviews along those lines, would love to hear a comparison between the top tier US/euro/asian roasters. specifically how they differ in approach, and what one might get from ordering from other regions (which is often tricky with shipping/customs).
Manhattan, Talormade
Manhattan is in Pt. II that we released today, Talormade was in our first European Roaster Tier List
@@CoffeeReviews Will check them out, thanks
Will be Tomorrow next chapter?
Tomorrow will be the next chapter 🙂
@ really interested in nomad, manhattan, TW and manhattan
Go check out our first European roaster tier list for TW, they're not on this one because we didn't change their placement. Nomad and Manhattan will both be discussed tomorrow though. Cheers ☕️
Koppi?
Koppi was on our first European tier list. We didn't feel a need to change their placement, so we didn't discuss them in this one.
Coffea Circulor not on the list??
They were on our last European roaster tier list and this one only includes roasters we felt need to be updated/weren't on the last one. They keep our placement on the last list for the time being
Circulor is world class for sure
I've been disappointed by LF.
Heavy across the board for me.
Starting to think we'd have had the same consensus had we ordered more from them during our recent purchase. This placement was largely due to the nice coffees we'd had from them in 2023 (largely carried by the Lerida SL34)
The same for me!
@CoffeeReviews Yep. This was my first order from them.
I drink super light, but for my palate the light espressos were way too heavy and the filters (all geishas) lacked nuance due to excess development.
I'm sure some love them, but i struggled and it was a rather expensive lesson sadly.
I thought good life was ur fav ever hmmmm
You thought wrong, Zach 🙂
No love for Lavazza? I thought you were a coffee expert 🙄
Isn't it past your bedtime, Grandpa? 👴
Firsts 😂😂 LoL 🤣🤣🤣
👏👏
You're ruthless!! Poor Dak 😢😢😢😢
Ww moved them up 😅
that's generous
Coco Bongo might move them right back down 😂
The Coco Bongo I also ordered and the Milky cake made me doubt if they sell coffee or gummies 😅😅
Am I the only one who feels that DAK adds flavor extracts to their coffee?
Their fermentations are always extreme and always on some cheap Caturra.
Sometimes I can even taste the artificial flavor.
pretty rough rankings, with no one in the top 2 tiers. europe falling behind? 😅
The 2nd part of this tier list will have a roaster in the amazing category and there are some European roasters we're working on that would be in that category as well.
Europe is still doing great work overall
@@CoffeeReviews btw the MAME pink bourbon is very special (at least when I had it in their cafe, have an unopened box here). their high end pricing is hard to justify, imo.
Heard similar from one of our friends so it sounds like they do have a very high ceiling for sure
where is @candycanecoffeecz? ❤🥲
You know, my brother was in Prague but had such difficultly navigating the city that he couldn't get to a coffee shop that sells them to bring them back for me. I don't know if they ship to the US, but they're a roaster we'd love to review given that we're half 🇨🇿
