    Can you make a video on overcoming fear of big waves. This channel helped me with a lot of questions I had and refine my surfing.

      Luca Molamphy the key is not panicking when you take a beating. If you panic and try swimming to the surface while you’re still getting tossed you’ll run out of air. If you relax and wait for the wave to let you up you’ll be fine. Also, take a deep breath before you start paddling for the wave and fully commit to the wave. Big barreling waves require a few more paddles to get over the ledge too.

      I was just thinking the same thing. I would say I am at that stage of progressing to bigger swell.. but I recently got a pounding and it’s thrown me off a bit mentally. I would love a video of how to 1.overcome the fear and then 2. If it does happen to go bad, what are some safety techniques or training you can practice doing when you do eventually get stuck. Great videos guys. Huge fan. You have helped me a lot this summer

      I am not an expert but I used to have the same problem of fear when paddling into big waves and what helped me was not to look straight down all the time. If you try and look down the line, the direction you wanna go while paddling, the fear will be gone as you are not looking down. As you are looking at the wave, you can decide even before you are on your feet weather to do a bottom turn or pump to clear fast breaking section. Try and angle your takeoff by putting more pressure on one the hand as you are popping up. Gives you more time to pop up. I myself have not mastered it yet but it is what helps me.

    Great tips!! Totally looking for these kinds of tips, will give them a go.
    Question: Sometimes the conditions are a bit more round and slow, and that makes me want to take out my 7’2” Mini-Mal. While I catch alot fo waves this way, I wonder if I am hindering my progression. Should I always take out a shorter board or a high performance groveler and just deal with less waves for better maneuvers if I want to improve?

    • @johnanderson3731
      @johnanderson3731 5 років тому +2

      Maybe try a higher volume short board so get best of both worlds - hard to rip on a 7.2

    • @HowtoRip
      @HowtoRip  5 років тому +2

      You could try a high performance fish with slightly higher volume!

    As a general rule, what size total volume should a 6'2 - 210-pound guy be riding as an advanced to expert surfer? I am interested to hear what the community thinks...

    • @lavodlavod3128
      @lavodlavod3128 5 років тому +1

      If I recall correctly kale did a video on volume vs weight recomendations giving a way to calculate your perfect volume parting from your weight. I, for example, got a 5,8 with 30L of volume weighting 80kg and beeing 1,80m tall (dont know the equivalence in imperial units) and it works really good for me.

      Its depend on the spot you surfing, hollow vs weak, beachbreak or reef and so on it could depend on conditions too.

    Gr8 tips, ☆☆☆ if at all possible, keep off the white water, to achieve maximum flow, watch Courtney Conlogues perfect 10 at Bells 2019 final. This is my take on it, flow is really about going with the wave wall even without manouevres, ... too many turns, might lead to a disjointed slide, Flow, is it a classical endless summer type of ethereal quality ? , independent to linking manouevres together, be one with the wave ~ qualities to surf with .. style vibe rythm movement completion endless follow thru = flow, don't forget the pumpkin scons !
