Can I go out to the toilet? And red dog (fox) I like sweet cake and Sharon Ní Bheoilain I've a jumper on me There's clouds in the sky Give me the sweet cake! Quiet, road, girl, milk
My da wrote this ad. Fun fact the agency flew a whole crew out to Brazil so they could film on the Copa Cabana but the geniuses didn't realise there's a rainy season, thus it ended up being a very expensive indoor shoot.
I remember being in a bar in new york once in a similar situation and me and my pal reciepted the our father as gaelige! I cried with laughter when I saw this ad. Magic.
This add is so hilarious, as an Irishman I have made up a poem to an English girl and she thought it was so beautiful when in fact it was absolute bollocks hahaha bless us and our sexy accent ;)
is maith liom cáca milis! lol, it's hilarious - because this is an accurate assessment of the level of gaeilge people have after school. tiocfaidh an teanga ar ais! gaeilge abú!
It's a fantasic ad. I could translate about 90% of it. It's show your average Irish persons' basic grasp on the language. Every Irishman and woman can relate to it. That's why it's brilliant.
I saw this on Irish TV when I went home for Christmas last year. I laughed for five minutes but my wife didn't understand it at all. Of course she's American and doesn't understand much of anything lol..
ciunas actually means silence. i love this ad so much, im an irish teacher in a secondary school in dublin. so now i when i get asked the inevitable question, but why should we bother to learn irish...i have the perfect response ! haha ! og go bog é (take it easy) Roisin :)
In Spiddel (not sure of the spelling) in Connemara you can buy jumpers that say 'Tabhair dom an cáca milis' on the front and 'Ciúnas, bóthar, cailín, bainne' on the back. They're €39 though.
Brilliant ad. What rowanirish said is exactly what makes it so good. I also love how when he says "tabhair dom an caca milis" all the brazilians repeat the words 'caca milis' like they were picking it up also hahaha.
'Madra rua' does translate into 'fox', it can be used as well as 'sionnach'. As for cáca milis, I was always taught it means just cake too, but as for your question... I would think that sweet cake is cake that's sweet. =P
I love how he just rambles on with any irish that he remembers from primary or secondary school- and just pops in a rte presenter just for the craic :) an bhfuil cead agam dul go dtí an leithreas- now that brings me back to primary school :L he's basically just talking nonsense knowing that no one will understand him
2013 still watching this... my brother's favourite saying 'is maith liom caca milis' his ability to quote this video is the reason he's not failing second year irish!
when i travelled to europe I used my irish accent, (roscommon area, my grandparents are from there) it worked, ive never actually been to ireland though, Im from the US but I want to go badly.
Love this ad sooo much, its something the irish would do haha got my irish orals tomorrow and i think i'll just recite this ad. We wrote it all around the room last year during the orals haha the teachers wernt too happy tho especially the irish one's
Hi jemmabond, basically I was just saying that madra rua and sionnach both mean the same thing, just as we have three words for 'car' in Irish. Also, I think the ad is very funny, after this ad was aired more people tried using a few words of Irish here and there which is what keeps the language alive.
the peom translates as "can i go to the toilet?,and a red dog(in most cases irish setter,as in bus eireann),i like sweet cakes(croissants etc.),and sharon boland(news presenter on irish tv,theres a jumper on me,there is a cloud in the sky,gie me the sweet cake. legendary when she says "speak more irish" at the end he responds "quiet road girl milk
The 'poem' is: Can I go to the toilet? And the fox. I like sweet cake. And Sharon Ni Bhiolan (can't spell her second name, but she's an Irish newsreader). I'm wearing a jumper. There are clouds in the sky. Give me the sweet cake. Yup, and that's about it. Just generic phrases you pick up after nearly 12 years learning Irish.
"tá scamall sa spéir" = there are clouds in the sky "tabhair [can't spell] dom an cáca mílis" = give me the sweet cake then everyone says "cáca mílis" = sweet cake then at the very end he says "cuneas bóthar cailín bainne" which literally means "quiet, road, girl, milk"
its al really random stuff, it's all the basic irish ya learn in primary school. in order: "an bhfuil cead agam dul amach go dtí on léithrís?" = can i go out to the toilet? "agus madra rua" = and fox "is maith liom cáca mílis" = i like sweet cake agus sharon ní bheoilann" [i can't spell that properly] = and sharon ní bheoilann its the name of an irish presentor "tá geansaí orm" = i'm wearing a jumper/i've a jumper on me [sweater as americans say]
Am I allowed go to the toilet? And a red dog, I like sweet cake, And Sharon Ni Bheolain, I've a jumper on me, Clouds are in the sky, Give me sweet cake! A traditional Irish poem hehe

Hehehe my friend has a hoodie that says 'ciunas bothar cailin bainne!' .... and when she turns around on the back it says 'tabhair dom an caca milis!' Lol epic :)
Is dóigh liom go bhfuil níos mó Gaeilge ag daoine ná mar a cheapann siad ach ní úsáidimid é ró-mhinic. Bím ag labhairt Gaeilge agus ag imirt cluichí ríomhaireachta!
@urbanguerrilla64 I will never forget 'An bhfuil cead agam dul go dtì an leithreas' in my life. Had to say it several times a day in primary school. Apart from that, I'm still in school and I only remember a few sparse phrases. Take in to account I'm doing honours in the subject and you see how well taught it is.
is aoibhinn liom an `ad` seo!!! tá sé an-greanmhar!!!!! (tá brón orm, mo litrú ufásach...!!!) :P love it!! every irish person would do the same if they were asked to do something like this haha!!!
ive been in ireland for 10 month and the ad always made me laugh. can so. please give the lines + translation? i know he says stuff like "i like cake", "theres clouds in the sky", "im wearing a jumper" and "can i got to the toilet" and in the end sth about milk, but i never got the whole lines let alone the acurate translation...
Well Andrew... You didn't tell me something that was new for me, but thank you how ever ! xD And the fact that its difficult to lern and not spoken by many people are no disadvantages ;) Bail ó Dhia is Mhuire duit! xD
Probably the funniest Carlsberg ad in the world. My Irish friends tell me the words are as follows:- "An bhfuil cead agam dul amach go dtí an leithris? Agus madra rua, Is maith liom cáca milis, (cáca milis), Agus Sharon Ní Bheoláinn, Tá geansaí orm, Tá scamall sa spéir, Tabhair dom an cáca milis, (cáca milis)." And then: "Ciunas bothar cailín bainne."
I'm informed that this is the translation: "May I have permission to go to the toilet? And a fox, I like sweet cake, (sweet cake), And Sharon Ní Bheolainn, (name of female TV presenter on RTE) I am wearing a sweater, There are clouds in the sky, Give me the sweet cake! (sweet cake)." The classic finale: "Silence road girl milk"
Can I go out to the toilet?
And red dog (fox)
I like sweet cake
and Sharon Ní Bheoilain
I've a jumper on me
There's clouds in the sky
Give me the sweet cake!
Quiet, road, girl, milk
My da wrote this ad. Fun fact the agency flew a whole crew out to Brazil so they could film on the Copa Cabana but the geniuses didn't realise there's a rainy season, thus it ended up being a very expensive indoor shoot.
That's awesome! Class watching it now❤
You don't even have to speak Irish fluently to still laugh at this ad 10/10 still
A subtle comment on the fact that many Irish people leave school after many years learning Irish and end up with just a few sparse phrases, good add.
I remember being in a bar in new york once in a similar situation and me and my pal reciepted the our father as gaelige! I cried with laughter when I saw this ad. Magic.

Brilliant ad. What rowanirish said is exactly what makes it so good. I also love how when he says "tabhair dom an caca milis" all the brazilians repeat the words 'caca milis' like they were picking it up also hahaha.

Genius! I want to learn Irish now!!
Because of what he is REALLY saying in irish, which is not a poem... check out the translation some posts below.
This is... SO relatable..
I think you should take another listen !!
Is dóigh liom go bhfuil níos mó Gaeilge ag daoine ná mar a cheapann siad ach ní úsáidimid é ró-mhinic. Bím ag labhairt Gaeilge agus ag imirt cluichí ríomhaireachta!

Or you can hit the tilde key before a vowel for a fada EG:
Tiocfaidh ár lá
most use the ctrl alt method, it's just like hitting shift for a capital.
Epic.
is aoibhinn liom an `ad` seo!!! tá sé an-greanmhar!!!!! (tá brón orm, mo litrú ufásach...!!!) :P love it!! every irish person would do the same if they were asked to do something like this haha!!!

How bloody sexy were those accents? Irish rocks! Having said that, translation please.
Or if your odd like me, and work on a mac, you hit alt between command and control. Works too :)

Probably the funniest Carlsberg ad in the world. My Irish friends tell me the words are as follows:-
"An bhfuil cead agam dul amach go dtí an leithris?
Agus madra rua,
Is maith liom cáca milis, (cáca milis),
Agus Sharon Ní Bheoláinn,
Tá geansaí orm,
Tá scamall sa spéir,
Tabhair dom an cáca milis, (cáca milis)."
And then: "Ciunas bothar cailín bainne."
And Google now translates this underneath (correctly too!)🤣🤣
I'm informed that this is the translation:
"May I have permission to go to the toilet?
And a fox,
I like sweet cake, (sweet cake),
And Sharon Ní Bheolainn, (name of female TV presenter on RTE)
I am wearing a sweater,
There are clouds in the sky,
Give me the sweet cake! (sweet cake)."
The classic finale:
"Silence road girl milk"
rofl it's like I was when I had an Irish oral exam, screwed up totally lol
complete gibberish :D
@horan28 actually the guy dancing at the end called the girl. A milk girl. Haha
so funny... quiet, road, milkmaid
Thats about the extent of my irish too!!
Maith na bhuachaillí...we've all been there!!!
Ireland - the best fucking land in the whole universe!
IIIREEELAAAAANDD
Ar fheabhas! My new favourite ad! :]
This ad has made me want to marry an Irish guy - the accent was bloody sexy...and I don't know what they are saying!
i think he says sth like "girl, road, milk" the last word is definitely milk...
This is great! XD
hehe.. that's what my Irish friends learn me as the real Irish counting..
