Shelling on Ocracoke Island!

- Today we are exploring Ocracoke Island in the North Carolina Outer Banks! This is an island that you can only reach by ferry or boat, and has a vast expanse of beaches along the shore. Today I will try to find as many shells on 3 different beaches on the island as I can!

Ocracoke is one of my favorite places to shell. When I hit it right I find all kinds of fun things. Thanks for sharing

Thanks so much for watching! Ocracoke is super hit or miss. I know the shelling can be way better than what I experienced, and can also be super bare of anything. What helped me was probably the fact that it was late December, and most people do not vacation in this area this time of year and the beaches are really empty. Also, winter northeast winds are often times very helpful in pushing in any shells onto those beaches.
We love Ocracoke! One time we were there and ended up with a whole bag of partial Scotch Bonnets, but did manage to find a mostly intact one very similar to the one you found. How about all those Queen Helmet shells and fragments?! We won't be back to NC until the fall so it was great to see some NC shelling!
I knew Ocracoke was good for bonnets, but I did not expect to see quite a many pieces as I did. All the intact stuff was probably gone by the time I got there, but it was a cool walk nonetheless. Thanks for watching! :)
Sea shells are one of the greatest wanders of the world I've never heard of anyone who wasn't amazed by them 🤔
Vacationed there once and loved the beaches. The shelling was fine but you gotta hustle to beat the locals to find the great shells. Cool island with an interesting history too. One of my favorite vacation spots.

We love the OBX and vacation there. I am a seashell collector and all my shells I find have to be perfect. I do not care for broken ones. My collection is from all over the World.

Just subscribed to your videos. Watched a lot of your Florida videos but have really enjoyed the NC one. My favorites are all those gorgeous scallops especially the bay scallops. I'm in Greenville SC and do most of my shelling at Edisto Beach. Occasionally find bonnets , tun shells , large old murex and big whelk up in the dunes. You should shell there sometime. Ocracoke is on my wish list. Did Sanibel for 2 weeks back in January. Loved it. Thanks for sharing your adventures!
South Carolina is definitely on my bucket list. There's lot's of great shelling opportunities there. I also loved seeing all those scallops, I didn't think they would be as plentiful there as in Florida, but boy was I wrong! Thanks for watching!

@@brendalins1237 There is a ton of fantastic shelling in NC. Holden, Shackleford, OBX, to name a few, are all places I've found amazing shells. It's a little more difficult in summer with all the tourists, but if you're persistant it will Pay off!

I find way more seashells on Hatteras Island. I will not plan to go here.
Hi, When you find a black shell will it stay black or does it change?
Generally it will stay the same. It's permanent staining from being buried in sand with low oxygen levels that cause a reaction that discolors them. It never hurts to try to clean them up though!
@@shellstories I want them dark. I've had someone in Massachusetts tell me most of her northern moon snails don't stay dark. I love the way they look.
@@brendagroff8478 In that case you can just leave them be. All of my dark shells have stayed that way (including a few northern moon snails from the OBX). You might want to apply a little bit of mineral oil to make them look like when they were wet, when the dry they may "lose" some coloration, and the oil helps salvage them.
