I have always been a huge Vince Gill fan and had always thought he seemed like the most humble guy ever. So back a few months ago at the Amigo Guitar Show in Nashville I was talking to a dealer at his booth about this $45,000 vintage Tele he had and we were having a great conversation. When all of a sudden I feel somebody bump into me and I turn around to see what had happened and I look up and there is this huge dude standing right next to me and I go "HOLY CRAP!" and he laughs and goes "Yep... holy crap" and it was VINCE! I told him how I had always loved his music and he took a pic with me and chatted with me about this old 56 Strat that another dealer had brought there for him to try. He played it and then let me play it and told them he was going to pass on it but told me I should buy it and we just stood there and talked shop for probably 5 to 10 minutes and he's honestly just a nerd at heart like the rest of us. I told him if I bought that guitar my wife would divorce me and he said "you gotta learn to not tell your wife everything". LOL! He's SUCH a great dude! He said he even takes all his expensive vintage gear on the road with him and everything. He plays the stuff and doesn't just "collect" it. I'm sure your experience with him was the same as mine. What an absolutely great player and even greater person he truly is!

Vince talked to me and my girlfriend at the Ryman like we were neighbors at the mailbox. Humble, kind, friendly. We were there for a self-guided tour. The box office said we had to go fast and be out by noon before the Vince Gill/Amy Grant Christmas show. As we went to the mic stand for our photo, Vince walked by carrying his Gruhn Versitar acoustic. He smiled and said hello to us. I asked what that unique-looking guitar was. He talked about the instrument and what a great friend George Gruhn has been to him over the years. It was my 60th birthday and it was a wonderful moment.

@16:47 - 19:23 is some solid advice on how to approach soloing ("Soloing is telling a story just as important as the song you're singing"). Like a few others have also related, I'm not much of a Country guy (more rock/metal), but I've always had the utmost respect for Vince Gill (singing, songwriting, and guitar pickin')... I'm pretty good at "keeping my powder dry," but I always lose it whenever I see him perform "Go Rest High On That Mountain" for the George Jones memorial at the Opry (in 2013).

Terrific interview - Vince is so great! I happened to be at a church service that Vince and Amy also attended, right after the flood in 2020. Like a lot of Nashville guitarists, he lost a lot of instruments that were stored at Soundcheck (right next to the Cumberland river). I told him I was very sorry about that and asked if his white Telecaster was one the guitars destroyed by the flood. He replied, "No. It didn't get my baby".

I think I'm a couple years older. I just have all the respect in the world for Vince! I've heard him tell stories and they are just hilarious! When I was a kid I had some friends that had a family band. They were determined to make me a guitar player. Couple months I learned all my cowboy chords and I could change them pretty good. Then they lost the rhythm player in the band, they were determined all along to make me the rhythm player. That day I needed an amp, I was starting my first gig the next night! I had bought a Gibson ES325 (yes 25, google it). Being 1969, I saw an ad for a Fender amp on a bulletin board at the market. So we called, and went to buy it. It was a mint Fender Twin, w/JBL's owned by a steel player. I bought it for $200, it was like new!! I never plugged it in, and showed up the next night with it. The bar we were playing sat 50 people, 75 was a crowd. Due to lack of space here, picture this. I set my new amp on a chair, plugged everything in, turned it on standby. Got my guitar on, turned it up, turned the amp up to 8, then took it off standby and hit a G chord about as hard as I could!! If you know, your laughing loud right now. For non players, a '68 Twin is 80 crazy loud watts, and JBL speakers with huge magnets make it louder yet!! I think it about blew the roof off that little beer joint, scared the crap out of everyone, including me, and all my buddies that knew what was going to happen were rolling on the floor laughing!! That was 55 years ago, and still the loudest amp I ever heard!! If your still reading this thanks! I've really enjoyed playing bars in NY and Pa for the last 55 years!! God Bless and Peace --gary (aka BFG).

Thank you for getting together with the the ever incredible writer, guitarist, performer Vince ("Sweet Pea" Little Jimmy Dickens called him) Gill. Like many of you who were lucky enough to not only see Vince live in an auditorium but to see him in an off stage environment. My Wife and I in the mid 1980's got tickets to see Vince, George Jones and Conway Twitty in Tri Cities, Wa. We got a room near the venue the night before, checked in around 10pm, got settled then went to the motel bar for a drink. Much to our absolute surprise and joy guess who was just kick'n back with THIS guitar on his knee singing and playing for those few of us - about 20 - who were in the bar that night. No,, he wasn't being paid and NO,, he wasn't drinking alcohol,,, apparently he was staying at the same (mid price range - under $200 a night - which for the time was a middle of the road price) motel. He played and sang for about 45 or so minutes, finished his ice tea, signed some autographs, shook a lot of hands and returned to his room. My Wife and I as well as all those in that small bar (50 or 60 capacity) were fans even before that night thanks to MTV but what we witnessed the next nights concert made us forever fans of Vince, GEORGE and CONWAY. Before that concert we weren't too excited to see George and Conway,, Vince was who we were there to see and hear BUT after seeing and hearing them LIVE we learned something,, entertainers once seen live are so much different than in a video. We discovered why George Jones and Conway Twitty were so HUGE in their prime,, the concert was incredible.

One of my all-time favorites of Vince is his solo on "How Great thou Art" that he played with Carrie Underwood. As awesome of a singer that Carrie is, he absolutely stole the show. She may have been the singer, but his "voice" (guitar solo) in that performance was epic. An absolute show stopper. It will bring tears to your eyes. Anyone that hasn't heard that performance needs to stop what they're doing, right now, and pull it up on UA-cam. Powerful, is an understatement.

Had to drop a comment on this one. I discovered Vince at the 2004 Crossroads in Dallas, I was really floored by this guys playing, it's not fair, he already sings like a bird but he's a real axe slinger, real deal virtuoso. I read up on him after that and he was talking in an article about being a kid playing rock n roll guitar and learning all the parts to Ramble On on Zeppelin II. I was sold and have followed him ever since, he's the real deal and a top notch person to boot. I'll always be a fan, thanks for this Robert, keep it up with the Guitar Stories, a great series!

Love to see his guitar collection. Looks amazing .Loved when Vince along with Darryl Hall, Amy Grant, Joe Walsh and other musicians played at his home. Very relaxed, he was wearing shorts, just complete comfort. They were singing naming songs and just playing, singing harmonies. Someone was going to play acoustic and asked if Vince had a specific model and he just went and grabbed one from the wall and the music continued.

Great stories, this is so cool and you are doing such a great job bringing this information and stories from all these great players. It is fantastic that you have gotten to know Uncle Larry and the other great session players in the area. These interviews showcase how cool you all really are and how much you all love the guitar and being players. Just wanted to say thank you Robert, and keep up the great work- you are a very positive influence.

I agree. His guitar playing is unbelievable. But like he said songs 1st. But when he does play even if it is just alittle, you can see and hear he can play more than what he's doing. He just plays for the song. Love to hear a instrumental album.

Music runs deep in my family who played, and sang at and around Renfro Valley Kentucky. How can we not know the name Vince Gill! One of the most appealing things about Vince is that he is down to earth, and grateful for his success. He seems like a pretty nice guy, and likes to laugh. Not only is he an amazing lyricist, immediately recognizable vocalist, talented and developed player, but he also admits to not painting himself into one particular category of music - the sign of a true music fan. So, all the best to him on his ongoing success whether flying solo, with the Eagles, or something else. Nice interview Robert, and don't be afraid to ask for a few pictures with some of your musical heroes and their axes. Most of them will surely agree. They have heroes too! It would have been neat to have an outro of you on video playing that famous Tele. Make full use of those opportunities. Rock on brother!
