American here... I consider myself a minimalist, and constantly trying to be mindful of everything I own every day. The cultural norm in America is... bigger.. bigger houses, bigger cars.. and the downside of course is not just financial, but once you have a bigger home with more closet space, there's the need to fill it with stuff or the tendency to not care about how much you own bc it's out of sight in a big closet or spread out throughout a big living space. I live in a 280 sq ft studio with a tiny closet, and I feel like I have plenty of space :) but it's definitely been a process getting to this point. I used to own a ton of things!
I live in the US. We live in an older home (1200 sqft). Our bedroom has a small closet and my husband uses it. My sons bedroom has a big closet and he doesn't even need half of that space. There is what was once a small porch that someone enclosed and that's where out front door is. There is essentially what is meant to be a coat amd linen closet. That is where my things are but it is more space than needed as well. Now before we started on our minimalist/eco friendly journey 6 years ago and downsized house, that was not the case. It makes me sad to think about the waste now. But we can not undo what is done, only learn better and then try to be better. We are learning everyday. Great video!
It's so interesting hearing your story! I have definitely made mistakes like that as well! One I got rid of a ton of fabric (not actually a ton but a lot) and just tossed it into the regular trash... I regret that because I didn't even think about listing it on an online marketplace or recycling it...
We seem really similar with stuff, I have trouble finding that. I live in area where no one understands or is concerned with being eco friendly or minimal. We go to great extents to even recycle.I have been watching a lot of your videos and they are good!
Hello! I am Mexican, and live in Mèxico and those wood boxes here are called "jabas" the pronunciation would be "habas". And here you still find them for free because they are everywhere ☺️. I really like your videos. Gracias. Greetings from Guadalajara Jalisco México.
I really liked this video. It was nice to see how you keep your things and the emphasis on just owning less. I live in Canada and we have closets and lots of storage but since I've been decluttering, it's great to now have some of these spaces empty! I am into aesthetics so I enjoy making things look good, but without having to buy anything specifically for storage. I recently organized a shallow drawer that's by our entrance with a piece of foam core I had and cut it into pieces to create compartments in the drawer. This keeps it looking neat and I have spaces for my keys, masks (now that we have to have them whenever we go to public spaces), my glasses, a couple of gardening tools I use to cut flowers out back, my wallet, etc. My favourite part of this is that I know exactly what I need to leave the house is in one place.
Thank you for your kind comment! That sounds amazing! I am always a bit torn between wanting it to be super simple and also wanting it to be pretty... I do have a lot of plants for example and sometimes exchange old plastic things with new (secondhand) wooden things just because I like to have good, aesthetically pleasing things around me... Oh yes, it is such important learning to know what you need and want! ☺
I live in Canada and we have so many built in closets. For the most part they are way too big and all it does is make people feel like they need to fill them up. And so many people have them full and overstuffed and yet they still feel and think they don't have enough or they still think they need more, better and different stuff. I understand because I used to feel that way... ever enough. I actually just feel sorry for those people now. Since finding and practicing minimalism I am just so much more content and feel I have more than enough items. I think there are pros and cons to both situations...built in closets and no built in closets. But I do think here in North America the sizes of closets just keeps getting larger and larger and I think it is just a sign of how the marketing is so powerful and it is 'working'...constantly telling people they need to buy more. Sad but true.
Oh, I haven't really thought of that! But I definitely know the phenomenon of getting bigger houses to fill them up to feel the need of an even bigger house and then it feels so empty so filling it up with stuff seems to be the best solution... Which as we know doesn't make anybody happier... 😕
Love your channel! I’m in the U.S. and it really depends on where you live for the closet space. A lot of older homes from the early 1900s don’t have any. But homes from the 1950s and newer have more closets with each passing decade!! 🤦♀️ Because Americans really like a lot of stuff. 🙃 I think there’s a balance just like you described in your video about the number of clothing items you own. Too few closets makes it hard, but too many is a waste of space your paying for every month in rent or mortgage. Plus, you spend more money filling them up.
@@ecofriendlia p.s. in my house also (i live in Florence) clothing racks are not the best option: any object i leave out of storage collects dust every week, so i have to clean it up multiple Times a month.
Yes!! I live in Central Kansas, USA!! Our home was built in exactly 1900!! We have 3 walk-in closets, a kitchen pantry, many cabinets in the kitchen but NO bathroom storage so to speak of!! 😅 Thank you for your videos!! ✌🏻💜👽🛸
You're like me, I hate holes on the wall and I have just a few. I don't even like paintings or posters on walls. My partner built a walk in closet years ago in the small room beside our bedroom, it's a wooden closet with shelves and I keep my clothes in nice storage boxes dividing them by material (all cotton jumpers together, wool jumpers etc) and use. It's very handy and I find all I search straight away, so no stress! I keep my shoes on a rack so again no stress and everything in plain sight. Coats and jackets hang on a side of the closet built for that purpose. All is clean, tidy and easy to find, love it!
I’m from the U.S. and have lived in various parts of the country. We definitely have a lot of closet space here, but I found the size of the storage spaces depends on what part of the country you live in. I feel like having bigger closets can sometimes be tempting to fill them up. 🤣
Interesting! I didn't know that but I think it is so interesting in general how different parts of the world handle it! Oh yes, I especially know this problem when packing for a trip. No matter which piece of luggage I take, in the end, it will be filled up.... Now I only own one backpack so that makes it a bit easier😂
I think the size of closets also depends on how old the houses are. I grew up in a really old farmhouse. It had no closets at all. I think it wasn't until the 30's and 40's in some areas of the country where built-in closest became standard.
In the U.S. not all houses/apartments have closets, a pantry or laundry room; it depends on the area and especially how new it is. We had to build our own closets in our home, but since I learned to organize before I learned to declutter we quickly filled every available space. We have recently changed and it is nice to have space to put things away out of sight! :) Thank you for all the ideas!
Oh I imagine that that happens fast, my built-in closet I had in my childhood bedroom was always filled up to it's maximum capacity, but I guess decluttering is something most of us don't learn until we have some sort of a problem with too much stuff! I bet it feels so much better now! ☺
@@ecofriendlia Yes, it feels so much better!! Since decluttering, life seems to be full of more time. I started learning French (just one of many I've wanted to learn) but never had the time before! It is a slow process for the years of junk and the large family we have, but everyone is very happy to contribute! :)
Dä Frosch 🐸 chchch! I like how you store your belongings. Simple. Neat. Perfect. Also love the Obstkisten. I store my belongings in a few packing cubes in two backpacks and love to pack and unpack them every few months, travelling to another place 🙃 and always trying to optimise and minimise my items.
That sounds super minimalist and amazing to me! Hopefully that will be my reality sometimes in the future! Ig ha grad echt müesse überlege wele frosch😂 (es stoht no druf "keep smiling" oder so)
I'm originally from Germany and living in Scotland since 2016. Keller (basement) or Speicher (attic) isn't really a thing here and we do have cupboard built into the walls, shelves as well which is great in my kitchen. It's difficult sometimes to store stuff because of lack of space. Luckily I'm a minimalist as well 😂
So I am super lucky that when I moved to Germany I found so much furniture in my flat! (Like two tables, 1 coach, chairs, Regalen (I don't remember the english word in this moment))!! Otherwise I don't have here the little room to store the things I use for cleaning etc. The Obstkorb are such a cool idea! Unlikely I don't need them now, but the day I will need them I will remember how useful they can be!
Having closets is not all it’s cracked up to be. For me anyway. I find that I tend to hide things away so I can “deal with them later” and then eventually they become an “out of sight out of mind” situation.
I live in Finland, and we also have built in closets in the bedroom, hallway and kitchen. I must say, the downside is that you can fit more things in them than you need! My husband has been a big packrat all his life, and he stores exactly as much stuff as will humanly fit in spaces. Now the minimalism is thankfully starting to rub off on him enough that we're able to at least get rid of the ADDITIONAL storage we have around here (kallax shelves etc), and just store everything he owns in the built-ins.
I drill a lot of holes in my apartment but I've got pretty good at patching them when it's time to leave. My apt, including the hallway, bathroom and balcony is about 240 sq feet/22 sq metres. I am lucky to have 3 closets in my apt (2 small, 1 medium). I got wood out of the trash and added more shelves to those closets. My personal minimalism rule is that I can have stuff, I just have to put most of it on display which is why I have installed so many shelves, with materials, again, from the trash. I shop at lot in the trash. Sometimes I even find hardware for the shelves in the trash. I don't have a dresser so I have socks, underwear and shorts in cardboard boxes in one of the small closets.
Even as a minimalist, I have trouble with storage. I tend to blame it on my inherently messy brain, as I never really understood how tidying worked in the first place. But while that is still part of it, I think I still have too much stuff. I live in a studio apartment and am blessed with a small closet that I finally can fit my vacuum in after decluttering. I understand liking closets. It's like having a bag with a pocket. The pocket makes the bag better, and the closet makes the home better. At least, that's my thought process. I love compartments, until they get to be too many and I can't use them or am overwhelmed xD
Awwww..... I hate drilling too! It feels so permanent :D In my extreme minimalist phase I just had everything on the floor, and on my window sills.... but it's actually not practical, and I sometimes prefer saving time and energy very much over just saving space...
Uff, so I not the only weird one 😂 or maybe it is a normal thing to not be drilling? Yes, it would definitely be the most minimalist thing to do but also so impractical... (Is that a word?)
@@ecofriendlia Not weird, just basic minimalist quriks! I used to hate it, because I was bad at it. Then got real crafty and made my own furniture, and started liking it. Now I just prefer white walls over everything else and I can never make up my mind about the right spot anyway...
I have two cats and I tried to leave my clothes exposed for a while. Let me say, it was terrible!! Most of the items got cat hair in it and others were ripped because my cats played with it.
Ohhh I can imagine, I never had cats myself but other people I lived with had... And I would definitely try to keep clothes away from the hair and the damage... ☺
Really long post, sorry. :) I have a small closet in my bedroom but ended up hanging only a long winter coat and two other cold-weather outerwear garments in there. For some reason I have my son's dress shirt and pants and tie - I think that can go back to him. Mostly the closet is for a small litter box for one of my cats, a special needs kitty who I let sleep with me and who needs access to a litter box during that time (I sleep with my door closed and none of the other cats end up sleeping in my room). So my clothes are in some 12x12x12 canvas storage containers on a three-tier shelf that hangs on the wall. I started off with six containers but now have everything including linens in three. One holds underwear and miscellaneous things, one holds tops and bottoms and one holds an extra set of sheets for the bed. In the space above I put my seldom worn but very much loved winter boots. We only have snow here a few times in the winter so I do need them. And they are colorful, suit my style and I like looking at them. One shelf right now have a lot of things I want to go through and pare down. It's become a bit of a cluttered shelf, mostly filled with sentimental items. Those are the hardest for me to get rid of. I'm considering putting them all in a single really nice storage container and labeling it and putting it on a shelf. If I feel the need I can look at things but otherwise they're out of the way. I'm still working through that process :) The bathroom my adult son and I share was remodeled three years ago. I put in storage knowing that when I sell this house and move, someone would want more storage than I need. It's mostly empty at the moment. My son and I share a small three drawer stand. He has the top drawer, I have the middle and the bottom has stuff we both use. I have a rule in the bathroom that if it doesn't fit in that drawer, then I can't add the product. I'm not much for products anyway, so it works out well. Any face creams I have I keep in a very small basket on my desk since that's when I usually think about putting something on my face happens. Same rule: if it doesn't fit I can't have it.
That sounds great! Oh yes, sentimental items can be tricky but I think it is a good idea to put them in a separate box, so you know where they all are and they don't collect dust and they can be enjoyed even more☺ I also really like this rule of giving a certain space to a certain category of things to just limit the space they can take over😉
I'm a 55 year old grandmother and I live in a home that's close to 1200 square feet. I have small closets. Not much storage. I had to make my small closet at entrance area into a pantry closet. I have few cupboards in my kitchen. I have to have a dresser drawer to put clothes in because bedroom closets are also small. I have a granddaughter living with me and the other nice out, but left her stuff in the other bedroom taking up space in my home. I can't over buy things because it takes up too much space I'd rather keep more empty. Thanks for sharing
I'm quite interested in storage solutions and organizing in general because I find it somehow therapeutic (maybe because I'm not someone who is naturally organized) I've lived in very small apartments for the past 15 years and moved way too many times The funny thing is that now that I'm living in a big house for a while there's no fun in organization and my home is much more chaotic than normally No need for creative solutions because there's so much storage everywhere But where's the fun in that? Everything is ready made

Yes, these type of built-in closets are wonderful but the downside is most people pack in a bunch of stuff & forget about their items, so these closets become not-functional. If you're talking about the United States maybe try to say "USA" because people from Mexico & Canada also refer to themselves as "Americans."
I would never use a clothing rack if I could choose, my house collects a lot of dust and i would hate Leaving my freshly cleaned clothes exposed to dust...

The funny thing is that now that I'm living in a big house for a while there's no fun in organization and my home is much more chaotic than normally
No need for creative solutions because there's so much storage everywhere
But where's the fun in that? Everything is ready made
Recent subscriber! Great video! I really like your tips! My favorite tip was the way you had the boxes set up and that they could be used as moving boxes! Such a wonderful way to stay organized! Another channel that provides minimalism tips is Canna Campbell's channel SugarMamma TV. I think you may enjoy her videos as well! I'm looking forward to your future uploads!
Thank you for subscribing! Oh, I haven't heard if these channels I will go and check them out! ☺
