      @@josegimenez1228 No. The main difference is that a country like Venezuela which was compared to Denmark a while ago for whatever stupid reason has a dominant party system so it's dominated by the socialist party. In Denmark all sides are equally heard and the liberalist party has won numerous times. That is how it's a social democracy. The only difference is that our common values stay the same no matter the party. We would never trade away our healthcare system.

      That's because of their wording. The socialist ideal is that you pay an extra $10, but then save an extra $40 (for example), but conservatives all panic and scream "They'll make you pay $10!!!", then go out of their way to make sure you don't learn about how much you save.
      Why would they do it? Because mega corporations will lose millions of dollars (Which for them, is around 1%-10% of their profit), but they don't want that, they want more and more and more, so they will pay media outlets to scare you into voting for people who'll hurt you, convincing you that the alternative is worse, when in reality, it's not.

The history has confirmed it, a similar system is the „Generationenvertrag“ Generation Contract where older people invest in the development of the youth so they can later pay the pensions of the older people and invest again into the new generation. Works in Germany for decades and well we pay less if we would do it all through private companies and insurances.

It's a virtuous cycle that stimulates economic growth and jobs creation, keeping the velocity of money high, instead of it just accumulating at the top with each cycle.

      And how much does a Big Mac costs in Denmark?
      Someone from Scandinavia I think Norway commented on how expensive take-out food is in his country, even for fast food. No one can afford to go out very much since it is so pricey even for a big MAc.
      As obvious, the negatives seem to be left out.
      Also velocity of money really doesn't means anything. Venezuela has the highest velocity of money in the world. The money literally can't be spend fast enough since it is losing value so fast. Printing more money, to make money spin faster is in no way going to improve your economy in any way.

    I'm Danish.
    What he said was correct.
    But remember, that European conservatism is somewhat different from US conservatism.
    Anyway ... all parties in Denmark support the single payer health care. It's simply just a tool for equality of opportunity. Not for equality of outcome. I'm a member of a (geo)libertarian party. We also support the single payer system.

    • @pm71241

      They are also often more aware of environmental issues and not opposed to decent social institutions.
      Although proponents of free markets they don't have the knee-jerk anti-government reaction US conservatives have.
      In Denmark they historic slogan was "God, King and Fatherland". But one have to be aware that very few religious people in Denmark are as radical as they are in the US, so mostly it's about preserving the institutions of society. Like conservatism originally was.
      Also ... as a Georgist, the Conservative party is kinda our arch nemesis. Since we strongly disagree on wrt. a Land Value Tax. But we *do* agree about health care and meaningful education for all.

    • @pm71241
      @pm71241 7 років тому +2

      Yeah... well... I subscribe to a somewhat generalized form of Georgism. To primarily tax externalities, monopolies and use of natural opportunities. Henry George mad good elaborate arguments, but you really don't need more than Thomas Paine to explain the moral classical liberal foundation.
      To bring it more closer to our times, I think Joseph Stiglitz has a lot of very good observations wrt. what we need for our future economy.

    • @pm71241
      @pm71241 7 років тому +1

      In the late 1700 there was not much difference. Since progressivism has diverged from what Thomas Paine stood for.

    • @pm71241
      @pm71241 7 років тому

      Now ... first. Let me say that just as I think US "liberals" are misusing the term "liberalism", I can perfectly understand if someone think US "progressives" nowadays are misusing the term "progressivism".
      Nevertheless: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressivism#Contemporary_mainstream_political_conception
      My point was that what Thomas Paine argues in "Agrarian Justice" is basically a geo-libertarian argument.
      Also, Thomas Paine lays out the basic liberal (as in the original meaning) human rights in "Rights of Man" including the point that current generations have no right to take freedom from future generations.

    @povelvieregg165 6 років тому +7

    As a Scandinavian I has actually taken me many years after following American politics to actually GRASP that this is a point that needs to be explained to Americans.
    Whether I pay $ 1000 to a company to give me a service or $ 1000 in taxes to get the same services should not make a dam difference. Actually it does make some difference but that is benefitting the tax option. If you get sick and can't work, taxes go down, so you have to pay less to get the same service. Hence the tax option offers better protection against unforeseen events. That is EXACTLY what you need for something like health care.
    Health care needs are by definition unforeseen. You buy bread every day, so you can plan for that. You don't need to pay government taxes to get bread. However you cannot plan for a 1 million dollar cancer treatment. Nobody regular person can save up for that. But since not everybody will get cancer we can pull resources together and spread the risk. That is the point of taxes in this context: Risk spreading.
    People may say, you can buy private insurance for that. But insurance cannot offer insurance against unemployment and income loss. Cancer treatment is not merely about an expensive treatment but also about getting knocked out to the labour market due to the long time it takes to get better and not being able to work. If you could buy insurance against income loss, then people would be tempted to be unemployed. Sure that happens in welfare states too, but that is why welfare states have systems to push people back into work. Insurance companies would then essentially have to replicate all the mechanisms of a welfare state within a private company.

      [sigh] If we do the math, we can see that the bottom 50% don't pay shit in taxes in the US and the upper 50% will just wind up supporting them on universal healthcare just like everything else. So if you are actually paying taxes in America there is no way you are going to pay taxes to cover the added expense of "free" healthcare for the bottom 50% who will be paying almost nothing in taxes themselves and come out ahead.

    Just to clear a few more details on, the tax system in Denmark..
    We have our working week hours fixed, at 37 hours with the ordinary tax-lvl at 43%.. Every amount earned in overtime, is taxed at a 50% reduction, for the next 4 hours of overtime. That means after a 41 hour week, you only pay 21-22% taxes. And it gets lower, the more hours you put Into work, during 1 full week. And a new tax-period begins again, and so on.
    On top of that.. Every hour overtime, your have during Sundays and public holidays, pays 100%. So its greatly exaggerated, that we have "unreasonable" high taxes..
    BTW.. During 1 work year, every employee earns 5 annual insured weeks of vacation, also payed and to free disposal, of every worker, with no exceptions what so ever..
    And all those rights are negotiated, from a joined committee, formed of every single union. For a term of 2-4 years depending on, the speciffications according to the agreement, in that valid period wich is determent.
    But what do you know... That's called socialism in some part's of the World.
    In Denmark we call it, good old hard work. And a healthy enviroment, to further new and stronger initiatives.

    In early 2015, I got diagnosed with a rare, cancer-like disease that developed a tumor in my head. After 8 months of chemotherapy, which had modest impact on the tumor, I had to turn to a clinical trial of a drug. Every month I paid close to $200 in premiums, on top of what my employer paid, and the $5,000 deductible, which i got hit with every calendar year. Also, I spent half my waking days on the phone with insurance paper pushers arguing about coverage.This was the scenario while working for a financial firm in America. If I have to pay extra in taxes so that everyone has decent health insurance, so be it. I wouldn't wish my dreadful experience on anyone, including Nancy Pelosi or Donald Trump, Jr.

    • @snapenightmare7030

      Just replying about the the financial side of drug research. If you had a government run system like Bernie wants to implement, the drug that you needed could very well not have existed in the first place.
      Drug companies need to make their money back on drug research that is very risky and very low return.For example, they might invest money in 100 promising drugs, and only have 1 drug that can actually be marketed. They need to have high enough margins on the successful ones to make up for all of the failures.
      In a government run system, drug researchers would be restricted in the prices they could charge for drugs, and the limit will likely be a low amount since government are always trying to find more money.(A problem that will be exasberated the more sectors the government tries to take over.)
      It basically wouldn't work if everyone switched to single payer because the US with the huge market it has is currently subsidizing other government systems in the world. The companies are able to make the profit in the US, and thus can charge less in other places, but it wouldn't work once you remove their main profit source. The drugs would simply dissapear if there isn't enough of a return on investment, and everyone would be worse off in that scenario.

    • @k7u5r8t4
      @k7u5r8t4 7 років тому +2

      Snape Nightmare. The cost of developing new drugs are already shared with tax-payers. A lot of public funded university-scientists are working with pharma-companies. Once the cost of developing new drugs are shared, most are not that expensive to produce.Denmark has highly specialized pharma-companies.One of them- Novo Nordisk - cover 10-20% of USA-market for diabetes (Victoza).In market-value it is the "richest" company overall in Dk.

      I, in Denmark, got breastcancer back in 2011. I got operation, treatment, reconstruction and all things without having to handle any papers or ask for anything. Hadn't a clue what these things would cost if I would have had to pay. And I hadn't a worry in the world as whatever would happen to me, my kids could continue their universty studies as our kids don't depend on their parents purse.
      But most of all: I like living amongst a population where I know that everyone is taken care of the same way. You might be young or old, richer or poorer. Nobody has to end up in the street and everyone gets the health care needed.

    Just as a matter of fact, in France, the Sécurité Sociale (NHS) spends about 5% of all the money that is collected, into internal management: employee salaries, computer infrastructure, medical records and so one. In other words, 95% of the money is invested in hospitals, drugs and doctors, to actually cure people.
    In a typical insurance company, about 60% to 80% of all premiums is usually absorbed into administration costs (including shareholders), which means that out of 100 dollars payed in premium, less than 40 dollars is redistributed. The rest is literally embezzled by these companies. No surprise then, that Americans pay so much more on health care than other countries. They actually DO not finance their health care system, they pay a corporate tax to very a lucrative business...

      I see that as eventually full government take over of the market. You may call it gradual but eventually everyone will be paying 50% or more.
      I regards to Denmark they are not any better than the US. I don't see why people are so quick to model them.

    • @whyamimrpink78
      @whyamimrpink78 7 років тому +3

      "They are much better than the US. "
      Based on what? To start, you are comparing countries with much different sizes and completely different cultures. To give a small example, no country has a NCAA like program attached to their colleges. How do you account for that when you push for "free college"?
      "Also, a lot of people seem to forget that the U.S. used to have 70%+ tax rates in the 70's"
      Which very few pay.
      "You can also see that under democrats there is a significantly higher GDP growth % than under republicans who want tax cuts."
      Here are some factors
      1. Under Clinton we had a republican congress, now who controls the purse?
      2. Following WWII every other nation was rebuilding while the US wasn't giving us an advantage economically, so no matter who was in office we would have been fine. Under Eisenhower we were great with over 7% growth twice. That followed Truman where he did it once in that time. Never happened under Kennedy or LBJ though.
      In 1967 there were 155 Americans who earned over $200,000 at that time who paid $0 in federal taxes. That was under LBJ. Seems like a tax cut for the rich did well.

      Privately speaking he is actually a socialist. He's not center-left ideologically, but he realizes the US is so far right that he can't go out and say he wants to abolish capitalism as his platform and have any chance of making any change. He is a reformist democratic socialist, which means his end goal is still socialism, but that he realizes the US needs to go through a gradual process of social democracy before it's ready to democratically adopt an actually socialist system. As a Norwegian I can absolutely say he's ideologically far more left wing than the vast majority in our center-left Labor party and is ideologically more akin to someone from our left wing socialist left or red parties.

    "Private Taxes" should be a phrase Progressives use constantly. We should use it to describe every time we pay individual bills for services that could be provided by a government social service. For instance, we should frame the discussion where we would eliminate private insurance premiums by cutting a $5,000 private tax and replacing it with a $3,000 government tax. We could eliminate a $40,000 private tax our college students pay for tuituion with a $700 government tax that everyone pays to invest in our children's future.

    • @agoogleuser3808
      @agoogleuser3808 5 років тому +1

      You can frame it however you want but the simple fact is that many people are not paying any health insurance premium now and many people will be paying far more than $5000 in extra taxes under your plan. The bottom 50% don't pay shit in federal income tax, only 3%, which means the rest pay for the lions share of any government programs they get including your universal health insurance which will just increase that tax disparity.

Our taxes are usually 5-8% of a single adults income per month which is £1.000-1.300 per month wage which is average. PS: We get 28 holiday days per year as average, paid for, so if you take a week of work, you get a full weeks wage in the bank account for having time off ;)

      Not entirely correct.
      In Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland NHS prescriptions are free for everyone, but in England there is a nominal charge of £8.40 per prescription for anyone who is not exempt due to low income (or other reasons).
      Taxes, including National Insurance contributions, are in the region of 25% of gross income - with taxes paid on the purchase of goods and services, and some other taxes, on top of that.
      Oh, and 28 days paid holiday (which includes 8 designated public holidays) is the legal _minimum_ for any full time employee. It may be the _median_ average, but the _mean_ average will be higher.

      Yes, either of your areas in the UK are better than our shit wit country. I still import my Rx from Germany.
      $160 USD for 200 tablets (a year supply). If I get Rx here in the US without insurance its $200 for only 20 tablets, maybe 2 or 3 out breaks so it may only last 2 weeks or 3 months.
      And with insurance its $20 co-pay for 20 tablets, still cheaper to just buy them from Germany, $0.80 per pill from Germany, with insurance $1.00 per pill. And without insurance $20.00 per pill.

      Actually in Denmark we pay an 8% labor tax pre deductibles. Then after the deductibles we pay a 39% base tax (people making over 85000/year pay 60% of every dollar above the 85grand). Everything we buy is sales taxed by 25%. So we pay a LOT of taxes. Gas is about 6,5$. We pay about 150% taxes on automobiles (a new vw passat is about 100.000$). BUT Healthcare, doctors appointments, school, college, roads is free. Highscool students above 18 years of age and college students get about a 1000$ in monthly stipend to attend classes. If you get injured physically or mentally you can work whatever hours you can manage (decided by professionals of course) and the state pays a salary supplement to a comfortable level. Minimum wage for an adult is about 80$/hour in general. It's not a simple job to compare our two countries income and taxes and I think our disposable income is about the same. In Denmark there is just a universal social security for whatever status you have.

      @@Kurkess That's fascinating. I became physically disabled in 2015, but it wasn't until 4 years later that my disability claim was approved and I began receiving benefits. In that time period, I did not qualify for food benefits because, without the official label of "disabled" by a federal judge, we have to work at least half-time. Now that I'm official, I get $803 per month in disability benefits, my Medicare premium of $140 is paid by the State, as well as medication copays (Medicaid), and I get $90 per month for food. That's it. Without any family to lean on or share expenses with, it's incredibly difficult to make ends meet, even in a state with a low cost of living. Public housing does exist, but there's a 2 year waiting list. A living wage here is at least $15/hr., or about $2,500 per month. I worked since age 16 and learned multiple trades, paying into the system the whole time, but since I became disabled young, at age 35, I'm supposed to make it work with 40% of a bare-bones living wage. I think that's pretty messed up. You wouldn't believe the hoops they make me (us, disabled folks) jump through to keep the benefits from getting cut off, which is an awful thing to do to anyone who has it hard enough as it is. People should be able to focus on their health and not have to worry about falling below a certain minimum standard. But instead it's nonsense bureaucracy, constant housing insecurity, frequent food insecurity, and so much exploitation and abuse.
      All I want is a little place to live where I don't always have to worry about being kicked out and can have a little garden to grow food for myself and share with my neighbors. But instead, I live in a parking lot.

    The point Sanders is making is that the biggest expenses a family endures over a lifetime are health care premiums (outrageous for the average workers), bankruptcy due to illness in a severely overpriced, profit driven, healthcare system ( loads of fun and stress when it happens to the average worker), childcare when your kids are young, and a $40,000 college education bill multiplied by the number of children you have. It does take tax money to eliminate these expenses just as it takes tax money to pay for a police dept / fire dept / highway system (which we do happily), but, and this is the OBVIOUS point, when those first four expenses are eliminated, all American people ( republican, democrat, libertarian, white-lives-matter, black-lives-matter, neo-nazi, etc) benefit HUGELY. THE EXPENSES ELIMINATED ARE FAR GREATER THAN THE INCREASE IN TAXES!!! And when this takes place, I'm willing to bet that the amount of hate being tossed around in this country will also decrease since the financial stress level in everybody's life will decrease. America is going through a stress reaction. We are not a hateful people. We are all just so damn frustrated and scared from how hard it is to survive in America given the financial pressure we, each of the bottom 90%, are under. Of course, if you are top 5%, you are basically immune from these pressures due to your wealth. The top 5% don't need extra. They are doing okay. This is what Sanders is saying and I don't understand why this is so hard to comprehend.

    - $46,000 (average wage): 36 %
    - $80,000: 39 %
    - $350,000: 54 %

      Snape Nightmare. To clarify Thomas Grøns tax-brackets. I have seen Danish tax-brackets misunderstood by people in USA before. When we earn enough money to enter a higher tax-bracket, we only pay the higher % of the income above the former bracket-not the entire income.- Also there are lots of deductables: for each child/distance to work-place etc. I´m retired now, but when working I payed into my own personal retirement-fund, and I could deduct 42% of what I payed in.-- Only 5% of Danes pay more than 35% in income-tax, 75% of Danes pay LESS than 30% in income-tax. About VAT taxes, I guess people ,who consume more, pay more.

    From discussions on the web, I get the impression that many conservatives don't get basic math. Every time, someone shows up who doesn't understand what per capita means. Per capita crime, per capita costs etc. They always go back "well that country is so much smaller duh". What Bernie said there is one important thing: "do Americans want to be a nation, or do they want to keep fighting, excluding and exploiting each other".

    • @whyamimrpink78
      @whyamimrpink78 7 років тому +1

      Black Wolf, I understand what "per capita" means and so do most who you talk to. There is more to the economy than that. Do you understand PPP? When you do that the US beats out Denmark. Out of the 13 nations with 100+ million people the US is number 1 in GDP per capita.
      But again, there is more to it than that. There is value in looking at population size. With a larger population you are dealing with more diversity, more cultures, more issues and more barriers. You are even dealing with more economies. How one state runs economically is different than another. One state's culture is different than another. Pushing for a one size fits all policy is challenging. If you ever study economics you will study sociological and cultural issues that you have to account for. In some areas of the country they desire higher taxes and more government where in others they don't. In WV they desire using coal as an energy source because that is a main driver of their economy. In NV they accept gambling as an economic source. In the midwest they accept farming.
      We are a nation under the Constitution on the idea that we are rights to control the government. What Bernie is doing is creating a country that wants to fight each other, mainly those who are lazy and refuse to work and produce with those that do work and produce.

    • @whyamimrpink78
      @whyamimrpink78 7 років тому

      Here's basic math: In America the entire bottom 50% of earners pays only about 3% of the federal income taxes depending on year which means the top 50% pays taxes disproportionately and that disparity will become much worse with the added burden of universal healthcare which works out great for the bottom 50% that doesn't pay shit and not so well as the tax burden increases up the income spectrum. So, in a nutshell, the people with the most to gain aren't the ones paying for any of it.

    • @brandonm949
      @brandonm949 5 років тому

      @@agoogleuser3808 Many workers already pay for private insurance premiums, so the tax increases that counteract that don't have to be super progressive. Any policy against the rich is warranted until the income disparity gets back to normal levels.

    Here's my situation...I work at a small company that provides healthcare coverage. It's a 60/40 cost slit between the company and myself and I pay $321 every 2 weeks or $642 every month for health insurance for a family of four (wife, 2 kids). That's $7,704 a year coming right off the top of my paycheck for I'd say pretty good coverage. If my taxes go up even $5,000 a year and I get free health care coverage for me and family I still make out with $2,704 extra in my pocket.
    What I'm also saying is the arguments against universal coverage are getting more flimsy by the day. Why do we need middle-men, for-profit insurance companies involved here? Do they have a bench of primary care physicians they're providing me access too? No. Are they really doing anything of value for consumers besides creating nice little website interfaces we can view? I'd say no. Also, Republicans can talk about taxes killing business growth all they want. However many business owners will tell you it's not the taxes that's hurting them. It''s the insurance costs on a company that's the bigger issue. Why not call the GOP's bluff on this and say fine, we're implementing universal coverage and taking the insurance burden for companies completely off the table! What can they possibly say about that!

    Bernie IS talking about social democracy, and NOT about democratic socialism, as you so well explain.
    The Scandinavian countries are all social democratic capitalist countries, and we would'nt have it the other way around. They are NOT socialist countries and never will be.
    And should anyone be afraid that it is a slippery slope towards socialism, consider this: Would we wote for a politician that'd take away all ownership from every houseowner, factoryowner etc.? Errh, no. Not in a million years. We need the capitalistic drive.
    A military coup is not possible either - our military is wayyy to small for that :-P
    A well known objection to Bernie's talks is that cancelling out capitalism takes away the incentive to develop, to expand, and to work hard for a chance to become a success. This is quite true.
    Socialism in it's pure form has'nt worked anywhere yet, because it demands that everybody has a social conscience towards their fellow man. That country does'nt exist imo.
    You need to have a government to force everybody to contribute to the common good, and through taxes collect the funds needed for the social benefits, the education and the healthcare for all.
    I pay all my danish taxes willingly and proudly, because I know they'll be put to good use for us all. And I'm no saint...

      Apart from Cuba and Costa Rica, Scandinavia is the closest any modern (1900+) country has gotten to successfully follow a socialist ideology; people just don't get what socialism is because the think it has something to do with the Soviet Union or communism and the fascistish ways of thinking they had. Well SU had nothing to do with Socialism except they USED the people by employing propaganda and a false belief that the people was worth something at all, then exploited them horrifically.
      China is not socialist it's capitalist. North Korea is not socialist (by the way by the very nature of socialsim, you can not have a dictator, then it will cease to be that)
      My point is, Scandinavia has the most democrating AND socialist countries in the world, which is both fascinating and ironic, considering the stigmas brought with both terms.
      We basically just made it work by doing what you logically were supposed to do to begin with.
      I don't care about taxes, everybody pays taxes. You can still get rich for sure, you just need to actually work for it here (or/and be creative) instead of just inheriting dad's company and do one degree of economics (which you buy usidng dads money). I know some certainly try to "cheat" their way like in true capitalist countries, but it never really works.
      Sorry for the long rant, I should not be on youtube during one of these #moods

    Bernie's questions and comments to the guy from Denmark gives me the impression that he actually knows what he's talking about and not merely making stuff up (as Ted and so many right wingers routinely do) to support the argument for his agenda.

    Trust me even I am a conservative here in Denmark, and I agree with this guy.
    The US is marketing on the “land of opportunities”, when in fact we here in Denmark give ourself healthcare and education by taxes so that every man and woman have some what of equal set to make their goals in life...
    Average tax rate here in DK are 37-38%

  • @shayneoneill1506

    Im not even sure the taxes would be that higher for the middle classes and working classes, might even be the same or less. The US has a vastly bigger economy simply due to its large population and access to resources so its got a huge business base that are getting a free ride to take the profits off working class labor and the physical resources that can be taxed like any sensible country would. The US can have the best of all worlds, but the vulture grip on the country by the 1% has to be severed first

  • @MeCrazy516

    Because the US is much bigger, we would not need as high taxes per person, mathematically it should be much easier for us to have a welfare state than Denmark

    Americans really don't know how badly they are getting ripped off. I'm an american expat living in South Korea, which has universal healthcare. It's one of the main reasons I do not move back to the US.

      As an American expat like me, what if Bernie's plan got passed? As an American, we have to pay our taxes still, even if we're expats living overseas. Your taxes would go up, but you wouldn't personally benefit from it since you're not in America. You would still support Bernie's plan?

    • @foxbodyblues6709
      @foxbodyblues6709 7 років тому

      multicultural is not the same as multi-ethnic. The US is more like Brazil than any of the nations you listed. Canada is 85% white. Thats your example? Australia has no immigration for quite some time.
      Try again

      Matthew Abolins You’re wrong. Expats who live abroad do not have to pay federal income taxes unless they earn over $101,300 dollars a year. Its called the foreign earned income exclusion. Look it up: IRS form 2555-EZ. The reason why is because expats have to pay income taxes on their earnings to the resident country where they live and work. Also paying income tax to the US government is literally getting double taxed. I dont make more than 100K a year, but if I did, yes, i would happily pay my fair share. Part of the reason is because i would in fact get the benefits of a universal healthcare system whenever i visit the US or if I ever moved back.
