      I feel like republicans will say something like "well it's easy to have a social safety net when we protect Denmark". If they do that then just say Finland. We are not in NATO (hopefully never be) and we still have stong safety net like Denmark. And in WW2 when we needed help, USA didn't do shit (only volunteers came from USA, I am grateful to them). So instead we had to ask Adolf some help. So no wonder finnish people don't want to join NATO.

      @The Wolverine I have nothing against the troops. My gripe is with the military industrial complex which treats troops like yourself as cannon fodder in their wars for oil and the every growing pillaging of the American public in the form of the military budget. $715 billion dollars a year to fund the military and putting solders in harms way in the middle east for the sake of oil is sick. If we had spent the same money we wasted on the oil wars we would have 100% renewable energy and zero troops would have been killed or injured in the process. A reasonable government would realize that a socal safety net and domestic renewable energy is how you protect your citizens not risking the lives of troops to provide access to oil in the middle east. Some of my best friends came home permanently disabled from those oil wars. It make me sick when I think about what our politicians risked their lives for.

    Just let me clarify our tax system in a very simple way.
    We don't pay any tax for the first 46.500kr (6719$) a year. Then we pay around 40% (depending on municipality) of the amount between 513400kr (74182$) and 55% of the amount over 513400kr (74182$).
    An example. I you earn 138kr/hour (20$/hour)
    52 weeks - 6 weeks of payed vacation = 46 weeks of work = 1702 hours = 234876kr/year = 75350kr (10.886$) in tax and therefor you get 159525kr/year after tax = 13294kr/month.

    I'm from Sweden. First of all, many American people (especially those on the right) conflates social democracy and socialism. As you correctly point out, social democracy leads pretty well to a meritocratic system, while socialism certainly does not.
    I'm not a social democrat (I'm a centrist (by Swedish standards)). Being a centrist in Sweden means a little more market liberal, small business friendly and decentralization and privatization friendly than being a social democrat. We also stand fast on socioliberal values such as feminism, humanism, the individual's rights to choose for themselves as much as possible.
    However, I think social democracy is a decent system. It has served Sweden very well throughout the 20th century. My main problem with it though is that it has a tendency to stifle growth (both economically and educationally) for the individual. In its efforts to create that baseline of social and economic security, people with a lot of ambition, potential and ability are often left out and often held back and penalized. Perhaps that's an inherent flaw in the system, perhaps it's Sweden's implementation of the ideology, perhaps it's because of the (in my opinion, unfortunate) influence the now reformed communist party have had and still has on the social democratic party. Perhaps it's a combination of the three.
    What is clear as day though, is that you guys are in desparate need of moving towards some kind of social democracy. Such as the situation appears to be in USA with politicians being bought off, Christianity creeping its way into schoolbooks and lack of basic healthcare is really unsustainable.

      I do agree on some things mate...The Agenda is far worse than that..
      Sorry mate, as your Danish neighbour i have to disagree, In Sweden you're struggling with the same major issue as here in Danmark, however you're much further down the drain than our current state of affair.
      You have a bought media with a agenda of killing free-speech and all right views on the world.
      Your state is stealing more and more wealth through your country for the sake of control and please the corporate companies.
      Your economic and all right society is falling a part by the main factor of hiding behind hate focused around colour and "unfortunate" casualty of war or immigrants issues based around it. It just breeds more hate upon hate.
      Your school system is falling a part and you are more inhumane towards your young people's own search of identity that you see them as mire numbers and machines for profit further into the future.
      you're trying to neutralize your wording through your country, basically kill of free-speech.
      What you're saying is such a major illusion and this goes the same way for Danmark as well as other countries around the world.
      The corporate state and all out "Global Empire" is causing so much havoc and chaos.

      I think you are being too quick in dismissing socialism as leading to meritocracy, or to use a better term (as meritocracy is a satirical term implying that people believe they cucceeded because of their merit and that those who failed did so because they lacked merit) succeed based on their labor, talent and skills.
      The core idea of most traditional socialist ideologies was not equality of outcome (hell, even Karl Marx thought that was not only silly, but impossible and something which shouldn't be tried) is that people are rewarded based on the value of their work. The idea that socialists, or even communists, want equality of outcome, is generally a strawman.
      What socialists protest against is the idea that people earn money and power based on the labor of others, i.e. not their own merit. This is the basis of capitalism. An owner buys (leases) people and therefor has the property rights to their work. This right comes merely from having money - though many may actually have produced part of this value through their own labour (i.e. running your own company, driving innovation, etc. capitalism always includes a large amount of exploitation - this is because the capitalist owns the labor value regardless of how hard the workers work and how much value they produce).
      There are many alternative systems that are in the socialist category, ranging from worker ownership (including full free market ideologies like Mutualism) to variations of collective and social ownership - and they all have very different economic foundations and goals - however, the core idea is that people have a higher level of agency and ownership over the work people do - or perhaps a higher level of democratic ownership of society as a whole.
      This does not mean that the individual that works hard is not rewarded by their merit, but it does mean that the exploitation is removed, and it is harder to amass large amount of wealth if you can't do it on the back of others. Some may still do so, however, for instance a programmer may design a word-changing system and thus create an incredible amount of value on their own. (And note, of course innovating and creating valuable work for others is also incredibly valuable).
      It is also worth noting that we may both be stuck in a sphere where we primarily think of economic rewards for merit. This is not the only way to be incentivized or rewarded. As you likely know there is also social capital, and most spend a tremendous amount of time trying to build it. If you look at the more extreme communists, for instance Kropotkin (who was well to the left of Marx), his argument was that all humans should receive the exact same access to goods regardless of labor (and thus being one of the extreme few closely fitting the general strawman) did not believe that merit should not be rewarded. His theories were based around evolution and humanity as a social species, and believed that with financial capital disappearing social capital would simply take its place. While I certainly don't agree with Kropotkin's overall view, at least not until humanity reaches a post-scarcity economy, he makes valid points which should be taken into account.

    "Without having the ability to be obscenely wealthy and have so much wealth that by its very nature it corrupts the democratic process"
    As a Dane, I can just say that this is an issue in Denmark aswell, we have billionaries and cronies here, Maersk being a perfect example. Whenever policies are proposed that Maersk doesn't like, they'll just threaten to move their business out of the country, which would cause a massive crisis.
    We depend heavily on a few mega coorporations, and we are equally influenced by international imperialists like Goldman Sachs snatching our energy production through shady means. Still no one seems to know what happened in parliament that caused the sale, but only the socialist party tried to postpone it to give time for the people to become aware of the sale that was happening.
    Something is indeed rotten in Denmark, and while our welfare state is the obvious choice if you want a captialist economy, we still stuffer heavily from neoliberal policies and imperialists. Our welfare state was much better than it is today.

    I'm a social democrat for this reason. Pure socialism has rarely worked out because you need to make compromises, you just do. Pure capitalism is the same. You need to figure out the right mix and not be blinded by ideology. I mean, I'd still vote for a democratic socialist if I was American because the Overton window is so far to the right. What you really need is a better voting system. That's the problem. Two party politics is never a good idea and first past the post encourages two-party politics.

    • @Kraisedion
      @Kraisedion 6 років тому +1

      You certainly always need to compromise, but the compromise does not neccesarily need to be between socialism and capitalism. It is worth remembering how young capitalism actually is, and how even massive countries like Russia were broadly feudalist into last century. 200 years ago you could easily have made the argument that you had to compromise between the power of the aristocracy and the power of the capitalists (and many did) - and remember back then democracy where usually just for aristocrats and capitalists/landowners.
      Today this idea seems absurd, but the oppressive power-structure of feudal lords has to an extent continued in the form of the capitalists - who also extract wealth through their property rights, as oppposed to their own labor. As someone who is on the broader libertarian left spectrum I don't see a large philosophical distinction between leasing yourself out (wage labor/salaried labor) and selling yourself (serf) - though of curse morally and practically the former is far, far better I would still strongly object to a system based around the idea that people own the labor of others and gain immense power from this - often so much power that democracy is helpless against them.
      What I would personally like is a mixed socialist system, quite close to a social democracy, but with co-ops, associations and individual enterprises taking the place of capitalist enterprises, but still competing in a market economy (often with public companies participating as well, just as today). I don't mind ownership based on the value you create however, and would not be against entrepreneurs owning a larger stake of the companies they start - such compromises would be very interesting to see in practice. (I would also want to decentralize the public sector and have public services to a broader extent under the control of the consumers, and public companies under increased control of the workers).

    • @kierandouble6414
      @kierandouble6414 6 років тому

      @@Kraisedion I suppose it depends on what you classify as socialism. Most people think of state-led socialism (that is, of course, a very limited view) and that's what I mean when I say 'pure socialism'. But your kind of market view is closer to social democracy than it is anything else, because it a mixture between public ownership and smaller 'units' of society. It seems to me that this is the closed we're ever going to get to a meritocracy. As for compromise, you need to look at the realities of what you can achieve. Unless there is some compromise between the aristocracy and capitalists, then nothing will ever change, unless there's a workers' revolution and such rapid changes rarely work. Of course, there is power in the very idea of a 'revolution' that can scare them into reform. It's in their own self-interest to compromise with each other. Compromises are better for everyone, even in this situation, because a person could take the side of the aristocrat or the capitalist and benefit by association. There is a limited choice. The system is still inherently wrong, but there is no unilateral concentration of power in the hands of one group or one person.

    • @Kraisedion
      @Kraisedion 6 років тому

      @@kierandouble6414 Oh, I agree completely. Maybe I did not formulate myself that well. My point was not that compromising with capitalism was or is the wrong choice - social democracy is clearly the most equitable, fair, free and stable system we have seen on a broad scale.
      My point was that just because a power dynamic is currently there and hardwired into the fabric of society - it doesn't neccesarily have to be - and that we can still work to progress away from them and finding new compromises as power dynamics shift.
      Even in the countries that escaped the liberal revolutions, the aristocracy slowly lost power and the old modes of production faded away and were replaced. To make it clear I think revolutions are a terrible idea, and it is hard to find revolutions that ended well, they tend to usher in tyranny. Even the French revolution ended with Napoleon and then a return to Monarchy and new revolutions.
      What I do think can happen however is that we can see capitalists slowly lose power. This can partially be done through democracy, such as the codetermination laws which social democracies already have, ideas of a share of the ownership as well (as proposed by UK Labour) and the government simply promoting alernative modes of production, such as co-ops or even their own public companies. But governments can do very, very little on their own of course. But as power dynamics shift, more wotkers join co-ops, etc. the dynamics shift. Hell, in Norway the majority of wealth is collectively owned and 38% work in the public sector, here it is actually possible to slowly offer clear competition to capitalism and gradually and potentially even largely organically, phase out capitalism.

    Federal-funded Medicare is our universal health care system, and our conservative government at present wishes to erode the health care system by introducing private enterprise elements within its framework, and just like the universities, focus on profit will be the main driver: result, erosion of quality of service.
    Australia has seen no improvement in service or cost savings for us the citizens, when government utilities and services were privatised: electricity, gas, education, telecommunications, airports, ports, etc etc etc

    Coming from Denmark I can only say that most danes (like 90% of the population) are happy with the welfare system we have built up over the last 60-70 years and would consider our system as the best in the world thus understand that the price - the high taxes - are reasonable and ok to pay in the end for it. When you think of it it is really just a way of buying for welfare stuff everybody needs at one point in time in there life anyway so why not make it a joined payment system for all via the taxes that covers all generations as we are stronger together than apart? I mean it really isn't about ideology as it is about pragmatism. Paying up front yourself or via taxes is really just a funding thing cause you have to pay for it anyway eventually.
    From you are borned untill you die we all go through needs which makes sense for the State of Denmark representating all danes to organize and employ to all. We all need a hospital to be born in, daycare, pre school, high school, university (or other schooling after high school), unployment payments, re-educations to other industries, Treatments, doctor, retirement and nursery home. Then it makes sense that the same State take care of other services provided for all like the police, jail system when people break the law, infrastructure, public transportation we all use etc.
    So basically it makes sense that the State of Denmark take care of the thinks that involved everyone anyway and then it makes sense that the rest is up to the individual so as no body tell people how to live their lives ie. Its really about thinking smart and not so much about ideology imo however I would agree that looking from the outside the "Nordic Welfare" system as its called is in reality a mixture of socialism and capitalism. If you want to get rich, you can do that here too, but if you are not so materialistic interested but more interested in other things you can do that too. Most important is not to loose people on the ground that needs help.
    Bernie is brilliant to watch and has been the best that has happended to the US in many years and from a dane it only makes me happy and optimistic that more and more americans have started to listened to him. He should inspire politicians all over the world and also here in Denmark how to get people passionate about their country and ideas so it'll be interesting to see what happends to the "socialist" movement in the US the coming years as I understand primarily the youth are up fr new ideas and way of doing things in the US, right :-)

    It's an objective empirical fact that the Scandinavian countries have a healthier and less anxious population, with higher social mobility, lower levels of crime, and higher levels of life satisfaction. I can tell, as a swede, that basically no one questions the welfare system. We debate if it should include dental care or not, how regulated the private companies working inside the welfare system should be, what the exact levels of VAT should be, etc. But basically no one questions the foundations; free healthcare, free education and a solid social security net. It's so obvious it works to everyone's advantage.
    Many americans seem to be quite uneducated when it comes to the reality of the human condition. They believe everyone is either a self-made loser or a self-made winner. It couldn't be further from the truth. We're all products of our environment and genetic predispostions, affected by chance and forces beyond our control (economical, social, cultural etc). So let's work together to optimize the environment and try to get everyone to flourish in their own way. Sure, the hyper-competetive nature of american culture might produce some mindblowingly influential billionaire executives, but it does so at a very high cost. The american society is a distrustful, deeply divided, stressed out and scared one.

      But it is always trade-offs. I've considered living many other places outside of Norway, but it is hard to find a perfect place. There are always downsides. I like in Norway 1) relatively high wages, 2) relaxed and egalitarian work culture, 3) honesty, 4) low crime 5) good public services 6) commitment to the well being of children. 7) Nature.
      If I did not live in Norway I'd probably live in the Netherlands, or perhaps Austria or Switzerland. I dunno. If the US could get its shit together I'd love to live there. But the way things are now, I could not imagine living there permanent. It is too harsh of a society IMHO. I lived there for a bit over a year, and I loved the opportunities, climate, people etc. But often it felt a bit like living in a police state. Too many rules, and often far to draconian. Too focused on materialistic things at the expense of human needs.

    I think people should have more than the absolute bare minimum though. I'd argue that this is what we have here already. When people get the absolute bare minimum it is just enough to barely keep them alive and stuck in the same place of low quality and hindered potential and with many other problems. If we establish a base that meets criteria that is generous enough to maintain a certain level of quality to keep people healthy and able to not be in a state of austerity, deprivation, dirty dilapidated toxic environment etc.. then not only will they have more options available to reach a higher potential despite bad choices or mistakes but there would be much less problems that come from despair because they will not be able to go rock bottom, at least not w/o really trying hard (and people who try really hard to go rock bottom probably have some problem that needs to be humanely addressed). I do not like to think about things in terms of "making it" etc.. I like to see people healthy with lots of options available and a guarantied humane life quality and room to live and learn w/o being put to the streets or into an impossible inescapable cycle of poverty. Okay not everyone will be famous or rich but this way no one will have to unnecessarily suffer horrible consequences that come from low income,poverty,homelessness.. also even if everyone started from the exact place we should still have safety net because we are human beings and likely to fuck up and make mistakes plus accidents and problems outside of our control. I'd never say to someone struggling "too bad for you , should made better decisions" Like if we knew our decisions would lead us somewhere bad before hand of course we would never make them ...also humans are emotional beings who are not always in their right mind so I would like to see a higher more humane standard that takes all of this into account and is oriented in a more egalitarian and altruistic way rather than looking at life like it is just a competitive sport.

      America in general is well versed in "the american dream"....its just baked into most of our mindsets so capitalism as a tenet cant ever really realistically go away in the minds of a majority of people.

      We're talking about the economic sustainability of Denmark due to its strong citizens. We disagree on immigration only because in America we simply have more influx of immigrants that contribute to our economy. So yeah, it is politically convenient, but it's also economically convenient in America to have different immigration laws when you look at immigration rates and their impacts on differing economies. But also this might be due to wanting to protect their welfare state which is also reasonable. Here in America however, it's a finer line because immigrants contribute a lot to our society and have been a part of us and seemingly will be apart of the type of country we are. Hopefully, we will foresee ourselves as the diverse people we are so we can move on and create a happy society, though in a different way from Denmark.

It is significantly more difficult to apply their system to our country on a national level. A state level maybe. Vermont, New Hampshire, Alaska and Hawaii can easily implement a similar system, but Texas, California, Florida and New York will have more challenges. I think the decentralization of the government and more state autonomy would better the lives of its residents. Sorry Bernie, but praising the Danish social democrats deserves some criticism. The Social Democrats (SD) in Denmark has turned massively to the right, by even adopting anti-migrant rhetoric. In 2014, it was the Social-Democrats who sold off state shares in the public energy company DONG Energy to the investment bank Goldman Sachs (YES, that Goldman Sachs). Also they cut taxes on the rich, because they had this right-wing ideas that lower taxes would increase the competition. Social democracy used to make Denmark more equal, however inequality and a rise in the far-right in Denmark is the direct result of the SD abandoning those core leftist ideas in the 90's. Denmark is still doing good, but only because the right-wing and the SD haven not fully dismantled the welfare state. However under EU orders, the social democrats are making the country more unequal and their pro-capitalist politics have alienated many workers into voting for the far-right Danish People's Party. www.socialistworld.net/index.php/international/europe/denmark/6122-Denmark--40,000-lose-unemployment-benefits
