    A few points: adjusting mirrors ,according to the law, should be done while the car is parked, the masses do not have your life style of hitting the open road, the masses drive an average of 40 miles per day, all those nagging sounds ca be turned off if thats the way you like it, pressing the button on the charging cable opens the charging port, for charging you dont have to use only Tesla superchargers, its true they are the most dependable but there are other decent options out there. I liked the video, didnt like the title. Oh and EV haters refrain from commenting on this post, i enjoy both worlds, electric and gas.

    • @livingforalivingRV

      Welcome Marc! This was purposefully a "blind" test. The only prep I did was "asking" tesla if I could make it and they said yes... as a full-time tesla owner you'd have many more options, but I have to say that the "non-supercharger" routing should have been on by default knowing that there are limited supercharger options in 2024.
      Thanks for watching. I'm not an EV hater, but as you stated, they aren't for every lifestyle and I'm an edge case.

    Good video. Almost every frustration you had would be eliminated within a couple of weeks of ownership. Just different than traditional cars. I eliminated all the lane keeping stuff that made the steering wheel vibrate and yelled at you when you change lanes without a signal on about day 2. But if the Tesla didn't have a gps or cell signal, neither would your cell phone I assume, so that's a problem for anybody who isn't familiar with the area. We have made several road trips (2000 miles or more) with our car and have become better at planning to reduce any stress. I prefer the car now but it takes some getting used to.

    • @livingforalivingRV

      I was able to turn some of the stuff off, but personally have a problem turn off features that I paid for. I'd rather buy a car that didn't have them and use that money for something else.
      Google maps will allow you to download maps and navigate in offline mode - and the original GPS systems didn't even have a concept that "online" would ever be a thing. I guess the software engineers are young 🤣🤣

    There are more places to charge an EV than places to fill up an ICE with gas. Every house has a 240v outlet somewhere, overnight charging every day, with a few adapters and extension cord you're set. My wife and I took a 6400 mile road trip from CA to TN and back in our 2020 Model 3 Performance and it was a very pleasant experience. Let the car do the trip planning, charge a bit longer than it says if you might diverge from plans. Never had an issue, autopilot was nearly perfect, way more relaxing than other cars I've road tripped. (And I've done a lot of road tripping) I'm super satisfied with this car, the things that are different I've embraced and learned and appreciate. And I'm an old guy! 🙂 Lately, when I show FSD to friends their minds are blown and the acceleration shock is fun too. 🙂 I love all kinds of cars, got more than a few here, but my EV Tesla is my favorite.

      If it was my car, I would have gotten all of the adapters for the trip... outside of that, I just plugged the address into the Tesla software and let it route... until it ran out of internet and that was where I got unhappy... the world has known about offline maps and rural areas forever. The rental didn't come with adapters and I wasn't about to buy them for the guy.

    Don't charge so much. The car's not telling you that you must charge. Clearly, you can discharge all the way to two percent because you did. I rarely go much below 20% in my Bolt EV, and I don't charge beyond 80% on road trips, and I've taken many road trips though never as long as yours. A half hour stop along the way is not a terrible burden. It's arguably a benefit after three hours behind the wheel. If I drove from Minnesota to Wyoming often, I wouldn't drive an EV but my Bolt (which charges much more slowly than a Tesla) is fine for 300 mile road trips.
    Practically the entire video is a review of the charge planning app. It seems to suck. I don't know. I've never driven a Tesla. I use PlugShare with my Bolt. It only tells me where the stations are, and I plan my stops on a trip before I leave home. Works fine. If the Tesla app sucks, don't use it, but you didn't give me any reason to hate an EV or even a Tesla beyond this app. Pay less for an EV without the app, and you'll be fine.

    • @livingforalivingRV
      @livingforalivingRV  Місяць тому

      I can't disagree with you - I rented it to try it out, the biggest issue along the trip was the charging - outside of that it "did the thing". I'm learning about options in the charging app and honestly, those should have been suggested/turned on by default.
      Like when I use google maps it gives me choices for different routes by default - and it downloads offline maps. I'd like for the tesla to say "16 hours with superchargers or 17 hours with AnyChargers".
      Especially when the car went into "panic" mode and didn't think I'd make it.

    It could be interesting to rent a Honda Prologue or Acura ZDX because they use built Google to plan trips. Since it syncs to your Google account all your preferences and destinations come on over which is a convenience.
    Both of those vehicles are far quieter than that Model 3 you rented and both are set up for light towing, 3500 lb in the case of the ZDX. They also don’t suffer from all the weird things Tesla people love and everyone else just scratches their heads over.

Say "I'm Cold" the car will turn the heat up 3 degrees. Say "wipers on 2" the wipers will turn on at speed 2................... Say "Open Glove Box" the Glove box will open. There's dozens of voice commands so you never need to take your hands off the wheel or eyes off the road. There's a learning curve with these cars. Too bad you didn’t have the ability to charge at that campground. We charge our EV at electric sites and it’s pretty common practice. The key is having the right adapters and being able to adjust the charge rate down so that you’re being friendly to the electric circuit. Even if it’s only 110 V it’ll do a decent job refilling the pack if you’re camping for a couple days.

You always wake up each morning with whatever state of charge you desire and in the vast majority of use cases for commuting that serves people very well and they spend essentially 5-10 seconds a day charging because that’s about how much extra time it takes to plug in your car when you park it.

  • @davidbergerson
    @davidbergerson Місяць тому

    There are a few things that I saw that you did oddly and some things you may not think clearly about.
    1. Why did you set the charge limit to 100%? That car should push down automatically to 80% and you have to adjust it up to 100%. The time to charge is to the limit, but as you saw in one part you showed us, the time to continue the trip.
    2. The arguing about the nanny. That is NOT a Tesla thing. That is actually a 2020ish and newer car thing. Those cameras that nag you for changing langes without a turn signal, those things that vibrate the hell out of the wheel when it senses you are drifting . . . those are in Ford, Chevy, Tesla, Porsche, Toyota, etc. They are there to help with those that are dozing when driving, and . . . drunk driving.
    3. Charging locations vary by region. In CA, FL and CO, I have seen them at gas stations and malls. In Utah, I have seem them at office parks, food places and gas stations (Go GO Bever, UT!) In AZ, I have seen them at gas stations, food courts, and hotels. In NM, I have seen them in gas stations, and malls. In NV and CA, I have seen them at casinos as well! The issue you are describing is how these are built out. Tesla follows the same concept of gas stations. They want the prime spot just right off the highway. Now, they run into the issue of, is there real estate there that people will lease to them? And the next issue . . . dude, seriously, learn to back up. You have a camera, go back an extra foot.
    4. The nav system is by no means perfect. It is a constant set of bugs be swatted away. You are correct, it does use cellular to get all the data and thus if you have no service, the car will not either. BUT, as you admitted, you shoulda, but didn't . . . :) One thing we have learned to do with the nav system is to put in the final destination. So if we are on a long road trip, we know what hotel we are going to that night, just put it in. Now, if we want to stop somewhere in between, put in that as 'add a stop.' Keep doing that for all the locations you want to stop at and that Yellowstone situation goes away :) The other thing that Tesla does NOT know is if where you are going is where you are going to charge! The nav system does more than just download a map. As it is a routing system, it works kind of like Waze in that it has traffic information, accident information, road closure information. So if you are 5 miles from an accident, it will re-reoute you to avoid it. That is what you can not download.
    5. Learn about Tesla voice commands. Once you do that, all your complaints about 'looking' will go away. Honestly, I think it is something that is rarely talked about.
    Now, you are correct about one thing, you are a slave to the charging network(s). But you are also a slave to the gas pump in an ice vehicle. There just happens to be more gas pumps out there for commercial use. But, ironically, there are more charge ports in the world by far than there are gas pumps. Think I am crazy? EVERY power outlet is a charge port. It may not charge as fast as you want, but if you took that car to a camp site that had a plug, if it was 110, you would get about 3-4 miles per hour charging. If it was a 220 outlet, you will get 30-40 miles per hour charging. That kinda kills the need for a gas station :) At a campground, if you are parked for 8-10 hours, you are leaving at 100% if you start at 2%. Something that you can't do in an ICE vehicle.

    • @livingforalivingRV
      @livingforalivingRV  Місяць тому

      Thanks for watching:
      1. The charge limits were set by the owner, I just followed the nav instructions until I almost got stranded at the park. That's when I did a full charge because it was 3.5hrs out of my way to charge up. After the park I learned that I need to tell the nav one additional stop to keep everything happy.
      2. 100% agreed that its not unique to Tesla, maybe it didn't come across, but I don't like it in any car. I agree that its anti-drunk, but I'd submit its probably texters also. If we solve the human problem, humans find another problem instead of skilling up.
      3. Regarding the backup camera - it sucked. It always yelled at me to STOP way before needed. I reversed into the parking space "properly" on more than one occasion and the cable didn't reach. That's on the designers of the system(s) in play... if you back into the parking spot and you're balanced between the lines and the cable doesn't reach... that's pretty stupid.
      4. I learned to put in the destination AFTER the final destination. It should evolve for sure, and I have faith that they will.
      5. Voice commands don't work without internet connection. I used them at first, then once they were unavailable I completely forgot about them.
      I agree that everything is a charging port if you're patient enough... Yellowstone had zero electricity available to the campers and I (not being the owner of the car) didn't buy the adaptor to donate to the owner.
      It was a fun trip, but I think that humans are losing skills every time something gets made/invented to solve their "problems". We should make stepping stones to bigger problems to solve... not to ways to lose our way. (not a Tesla specific problem)

      Thanks for watching - Honest question: Do you think an inexperienced EV driver should arrive at a programmed destination without the ability to leave it with on-board "intelligent" mapping?
      I'm mainly speaking to the "generational knowledge" that a gas station is pretty much always within "low fuel alert" range of a gas vehicle... 100% agreed: we have become soft for sure. I solved the problem, but either go all the way with the tech or don't go at all... having zero mapping and knowing you won't make the destination is unacceptable in 2024 - the car should have come from the factory with a default set of maps. (like all modern gas cars do) Maps that work offline and have update-ability as time goes on.
      Don't get me wrong either, I hate modern gas cars because of the broken software in them as well. Next time I'm renting a Viper -- with no software.
      One should not pay extra for broken software.

      @@ModestMuse3 I agree it tried to warn me, but it didn't have any less information when I started the trip, when I got the "error" and when I re-started navigation. If it was a "real" issue (which it later turned out to be), the truth would never have changed throughout the trip. My biggest/only complaint is about bad software - as a long time developer of software, things like that really bug me because they are easily noticed, should have been planned for and after 12 years of tesla dev (or 20+ years of navigation dev, or 40+ years of range dev) should have been noticed by at least one of the drivers/devs/qa/dealers/techs/sales/etc. Its not just tesla either, its all over.

    • @markzollo3224

      @@livingforalivingRV Oh, the joys of modern technology! It's like we've traded our trusty old maps for a treasure hunt, where the treasure is a working charger, and the map is... well, kind of a suggestion.
      As for whether an inexperienced EV driver should end up at their programmed destination only to realize they can't leave? That sounds like the plot twist in a bad horror movie: "Escape from Charge Station Zero."
      You’re right about the generational knowledge. With gas cars, you know that when that little "low fuel" light comes on, there’s probably a gas station around the corner or just down the road. It's almost a comforting reminder that you’re never too far from help. But in an EV, when that battery meter starts dipping into the danger zone, it feels a bit more like playing a high-stakes game of "Will I Make It?"
      It's 2024, folks! We’ve got AI that can write poetry, cars that can (sort of) drive themselves, and yet we’re still facing the digital equivalent of getting lost in the woods because someone forgot to pack the compass. The car should indeed come with a built-in, up-to-date map that doesn’t require a connection to the internet gods. This is the basic stuff - like making sure your fancy new smartwatch can still tell the time when your phone dies.
      I completely get your frustration. You shouldn’t have to pay extra for a navigation system that’s about as reliable as a paper map in a rainstorm. And I love your solution: renting a Viper with no software. Sometimes you just want a car that goes vroom without all the extra beeps, boops, and potential meltdowns.
      And yes, there's a certain appeal to the simplicity of a car like a Viper with minimal software, but the benefits of advanced technology, when implemented correctly, can greatly enhance the driving experience. Hopefully, EV manufacturers will continue to improve these systems to meet the expectations of all drivers.
