  • How, I ask you, have I gotten this far in and not reviewed Highland Park 12 yet? It's quite simple really. I did mean to do it in the past...but when the opportunity arose...I reviewed something else instead. Got here in the end though.
there was a "boo-boo" (shall we say) in this review. I had a small brain fart and suggested that I thought someone told me this whisky was non chill-filtered. Obviously it IS chill filtered. What I was aiming for, was that there was no colour added. It has escaped me, all this time, that it states clearly on the label "NATURAL COLOUR"! I genuinely don't know how many bottles of this I've had and I'd never once noticed that. It was only when I was editing the video and read it on the bottle spinning behind me. My humblest apologies for being a daft eejit
    Enjoy.

Great review. I am six months into my whisky journey, focused on Scotch & Irish, and you are correct, this is something everyone should try in their whisky journey. Most things I've tried I have thoroughly enjoyed, but I did not like this one. I picked up a burnt rubbery taste on the finish that I could not get past. I recognize that it is a quality whisky. I went to it as an entry point to peated, so it taught me that I am not yet ready for peated, it is not what I enjoy in a good whisky. Heck, I was even given a sample of the universally acclaimed Springbank 10 and I didn't care for that, either. The finish on that reminded me of a recently extinguished house fire. The initial experience was nice, but when the peat elements reveal themselves, I go running back to the Highlands and Speyside, where I belong, for now. My plan is to revisit peat/smoke in about a year's time to see if my palate has matured enough to appreciate it, so I'll be watching you for suggestions.
Thanks for your great reviews. Between you and Ralfy, you've been magnificent guides on my whisky journey. Both of you convinced me to try Clynelish 14 & Craigellachie 13 and I am ever so grateful for that, they are two of my favorite pours. Cheers!

Bottled at 43% here in the states and runs $45-$55. Better than Glenlivet 12, Glenfiddich 12, and many others near its price point. Then again, it’s what you’re looking for. Some people love Speysides….I’m a highland & Islay fan…I like the peat smoke.
HIghland Park 12 is one of the best single malts ….especially comparing to other more expensive single malts or super deluxe blends.

I agree this is a classic and a good whisky for a broad audience. I wonder how many bottles of this were sold just because of the bottle design and good marketing... which would be primarily to beginners. I also agree it is balanced and a gentle enough peat experience to be a good one to introduce people to peat. People who like the sweeter ones will not like this as well. I've not replaced mine and probably won't mostly because I'm focused on better quality integrity drams at this point in my journey. For a beginner's gift, maybe I'd buy this if on offer.

Cheers Bud. It would appear there is a consensus here. Definately at the beginning of the journey.
I also totally agree with you on the bottle design. In fact, were it my decision to make, I wouldn't sell this in a box. If you're trying to make this appeal this to casual drinkers and you go to the effort of making an eye-catching vessel...why hide it behind cardboard 🤔.
Good to hear from you my friend.

Cheers for (re)visiting this one Jim. It's a whisky I've not tried in a long while. It's indeed one of those you encounter early on in your journey and it was, at that point in time, a good whisky that tought me a thing or two about what whisky can be. It's also very much a case of been there, done that, moved on. If only Edrington would show this some TLC, even just as much as bumping up the ABV to 43% and take it easy on the chill filtering, this might well become a staple once again for the more seasoned enthusiasts. Won't hold my breath though as this is just so readily available and aimed at supermarket customers, I think they're well content with how things are now. I'm not talking down HP 12, but don't you just hate it when everything about a whisky screams that it's not as good as it could have been?! Slainte my friend.

@@WhiskeyNovice I've tried finding an online wodka community that feels Lidl's €11 a botlle housebrand is the shit. alas, we're doomed to enjoy those fine, well aged yet expensive whiskies. Doomed, I tell ya

Hi Jim. Oohh highland park 12, last time I bought this was in the earlier bottle design, so some time ago and to tell you the truth I don’t get the urge to buy it again. Maybe if Edrington put the ABV up might buy it again. As you said plenty of choices out there for around the same price (eg Arran 10). The legacy doesn’t pretend to be what its not and for around €20 its not a bad buy, an easy sipper over ice 👍. Thanks as usual Jim for your honesty. Slàinte Mhath.

Cheers David. I'm honestly starting to believe that unless they bottled at 46%...we still wouldn't buy it.
I love the fact that, even though reviews like this one are probably fired more across the bow of the beginner...it's enthusiasts like yourself and others who watch. I'm not complaining (believe me) because I also love the fact that we, the enthusiasts, are all pretty much in agreement about this whisky. Not a bad place to start but not really one that gets a look in further down the line. Can't see that change any time soon.
      Thanks buddy.

Andys go to dram in our local, as that’s the best dram they sell. Agree Ardmore over this every time lol ... slainthe 🥃

😄 cheers Hellen. D'ya know...sometimes it comes down to that doesn't it?! HP12 may be very average to us now but...when held up against a lot of average to poor blends...I'd be drinking it too 😉

Hey Jim. Enjoyed your review. I had a bottle quite early in my whisky journey and enjoyed it. My dad gifted me another bottle to my birthday at the beginning of the year. I still do enjoy it and to me this is a distillery that is really important to try if you are enjoying scotch. This is a house style that i haven´t had with any other talisker. Should it be more than 40%? Sure, but still give it a try. My next Highland Park will be the CS. :) Cheers Jim

Jim! It's been ages! Yes! 'Everybody should have tried this at some point.' Probably my entry into peat right there. I've bought it for others who were beginning their journey and they loved it. I haven't tried the Ardmore yet. Yes, it is more affordable, even here in Canada. Will pick up. Best to you and yours! :)

Rich how are ya buddy? Good to hear from you again. Honestly...the Ardmore is an easy sipper but, quite similar to the HP stiling. If it's cheap cheap then maybe. But if not, I wouldn't really bother any more. Cheers man. You too.

A classic whisky... but also a beginners whisky imo.
I've had it and would (at this point in my whisky journey) not replace it. I might give it a try if it was at least 46%abv and unchillfiltered.
Thanks for reviewing this dram, Jim.

This was one of my first bottles purchased (along with Aberlour 12, Ledaig 10, and Bunnahabhain 12) and I keep it around as a "bit of everything" whisky to offer as an entry/exploration dram.

Good call Jon-Marc. Ledaig 10 and Bunna 12 are hefty expressions to be starting early with. Respect my friend.

Never have I seen such 100% consensus "love It, BUT"
I picked up a pre-Viking Honor bottle for a few bucks extra. 43%. I'll open it someday but now I'm wishing to find an Indie sherry matured at full ABV. I see a few Douglas Laing bourbon batches.

I hear that's the way to go with HP (and Auchentoshan, and Jura, etc., etc., etc.) now Matt. Indy bottlings. They really are tuned to the enthusiast...mostly 🤔😄
      Cheers.

I've never had a full bottle of HP 12 and probably never will. I have tasted it on few occasions and found it OK-ish. In Bulgaria it sales for 34-35 euros, which is way too much for a 40 %, basic single malt, even being natural colour. I can buy Glenallachie 12 for the same money and Arran 10 for 20% less so it is a no brainer for me. HP 12 also did nothing for me as a gateway dram as peated whisky has already been introduced to me.
So, as I see it, HP 12 is a solid, fairly consistent dram, poorly presented at 40% and with less than great price/quality ratio.
    Cheers!

    • @WhiskeyNovice
      @WhiskeyNovice  2 роки тому

That just about sums it up buddy. And when you're getting Glenallachie and Arran at those prices...no-one would blame you for dodging HP. Cheers.

Is it better than the Bowmore 12?
