How to Build an Octagon Picnic Table | PART 1

- This is Part 1 of a new build. How to build an Octagon Picnic Table. For as long as I can remember I wanted to build an Octagon Picnic Table and I looked everywhere for a good design and plan. Well I finally found one that was perfect for my patio. I got this design from Woodcraft Magazines April May issue Volume 10. It was a design and article by Bill Sands. Bill did a great job with this article and made it very easy to follow along. I only hope my build videos are as easy for you to follow. My table is build from Pressure Treated Pine and the material cost was around $152 US.
Plans and a cut list will be provided by the end of the build and will be available on my website shortly. In the meantime I recommend trying to get a hold of this Bill's article from Woodcraft Magazine.

Great to see you again. Yeah the morning weather was really nice Sunday and Monday. Even in Fort Myers, so you'll enjoy the table for a while anyway. And we'll enjoy the build videos. So keep them coming. Take care, David
Welcome back Laney. Picnic table looking good.
Great table Laney, glad to see you're back! Looking forward to the rest of the build
Nice my dad built one many years ago, I now have built several for family and friends of his standard design. I was too young to pay much attention when he built the octagon one so I am enjoying your build and will soon tackle it myself, many thanks and I enjoy your videos.
This is definitely on my list of things to build. Thanks for all you do. I really enjoyed the 'voila and the chuckle added something too. Keep up the good work!
Welcome back Laney, great to see you doing your passion, we truly missed you. Nice build and timely for me. My wife has been talking about an Octagon Picnic Table, I guess that is my next project. Thanks again for all you do for us.

Thank you for all your time. Henrie. Greetings from the Netherlands.
Hey Laney Just great to see you in the shop again. Nice looking picnic table. I like the walk through design . Great for us older folks that can't climb over the benches . This would be great for the wife who is disabled with RA
Thanks Laney
Roland
@LaneyShaughnessy thanks for the lesson and tips. Whenever I use my miter saw I'm usually throwing scrap under the long ends...why have I not thought of your style? Duh...lol.
Love this table!!
I'm already excited for Part 2!
Excellent build and explanation. All the handy jigs were very impressive.. I guess time and again such inspiration is required to keep the passion going. Definitely going to try this and add an umbrella hole in the center:) thanks once again for doing all the research and bringing that woodcraft article to life.
Great to see a new video from you Laney, the sponsor video was very well integrated in it, wasn't disturbing and totally understandable!
Nice to have you back
Missed you realy....! Greetings from good old Germany :-)

Laney,
I really like the new intro with the saw blade sound and the chips flying. That was definitely cool. Excellent build. Glad to have you back in the community.

Glad to see you back with another project, Laney!!! Love this table! Can't wait to see Vid #2! As always, thanks for sharing your "WWW" (wood working wisdom)! You're one of my "trusted sources".
Hey brother, great explaining i feel like i could make anything, you explain it super well. TY for that :) excellent video!
Great design Laney, i need a picnic table for work that could be the one. Great to see you back as well.
Looking very nice
Great video as always, Laney! Good to have you back!
You are the man Laney!
Like this design too, looking forward to part two. Today was a perfect taste of fall day to use that table! Thanks Laney.
Dave Ellingsen Today was a really nice day... The opening of the video when I was sitting at the table was shot this morning..wow the weather was awesome...
Great video can't wait for part 2
Great work Laney!
Nicely done on the table Laney. Great video as well.
Looking good so far!
wow that looks awesome. and at 152 bucks for a table is so cheap compared to commercial ones. 152 bucks wouldn't even get a plastic "hunk a junk" that would fall apart. nice job Laney cant wait for the next one
For me this has been a very challenging build. There are many ways to screw up in even small ways that add up because of so many joints. I have been gathering new learning experiences in trying to get this completed, and I am still at it.
Howd it come out?
Don't give up! I find woodworking is a lot of trial and error being self taught. Keep attending UA-cam university...lol. I frequently pause, rewind and take notes. My knowledge has grown in leaps and bounds because of UA-cam university!
I just discovered this guy today because he doesn't have the word woodworking in his title. Three of my favorites are easy to understand like this guy: Stumpy Nubs, 3x3 Custom Tamar and Matthew Peech
Just in time for summer!
Great job as always my friend. Good to see you reclaiming some of you time :)
My best show number one fan in san antonio tx
I've decided to buy a table because the wood is so expensive right now in Canada! But thank you for the great video!
Greets from the UK Laney - Great to see you back - great looking table!
Your so nice😃😃

Laney...Nice to see you back...
It's good project furniture..congratulation.

HE IS BACK,AND WE ARE HAPPY
Chuck Branch Happy to hear it Chuck
Glad we got all that footage of you loading and unloading wood from your truck. Helpful.
Love your stuff and that you are doing it again :-) (And I told you to your face in NC :-)
Drawing up the Sketchup Plans and Cut List.. I will have them available for you all soon...
when??
I wasn't able to find the plans and list. Could you tell me where to find them? Thanks
Laney Shaughnessy
Did you post this by chance?
When will your plans be up please? Looking forward to building this
Nice Video clip! Forgive me for butting in, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you researched - Rassiff Amazing Woodwork Blaster (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is a good one of a kind guide for getting the best woodworking plans without the normal expense. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my friend Sam got astronomical success with it.
Very Nice...!
very good~
I saw you on Izzy's show, good workmanship sir.
I just love it how u Americans say u can do ur projects for less $150 dollars in the UK it probley cost anything up 2 £200 pounds wood so expensive here in the UK but I love watching the wood work u do
Good job
this is really cool man,wow
+StreetKingz4Life Thank you
I allways smash the like botton on this videos
Great job Laney,
Nice to see you back, I'm looking forward to part two.
When carrying a small amount of short boards like you are in the video, just leave the tailgate up and rest the ends of the boards on it. Then throw a tie down over them to hold them in place. This secures the lumber way better and safer with no chance of it falling out the end of the bed.
answered my own question. Googled magazine issue and up it popped and the pattern was available for download
Hello from Palm Coast!!!! 14:30
Laney, May I sudgest you buy the DeWalt chop saw stand they are only about $230 and they kick ass
I really want this round picnic tables
Hello, can this be achieved with only a miter saw for all the angles? I know you used the table saw for the perfect angle. I was just wondering if the 23.5 degree angles will be fine with the miter saw.
Thanks again! Great tutorial.
Great table and vid. I do have a question though. You said to make a 60 degree cut on the mitre saw but I saw no jig. Can you explain this please.
Holy crap. I used the same blender effect with a similar saw sound on my video which I posted pretty much at the same time as this one. That's pretty freaky!
Mario Cappellano Nice effect..I like the wood floor in yours..lol
:-) that was an extra few hours work, so NOT worth it! I think it's pc upgrade time for me, it was around a 4 hour render time for that tiny clip.
So nice to see you back and getting sawdust in your hair. Poor spiders will have to leave. Maybe bugzilla will visit. I'll bet you measured 5 times before cutting once since you have an audience (haha). Thanks for sharing the build.
MRrwmac Yes got all of the spider webs cleared out..lol
Laney Shaughnessy That's my "Supply Store" too.....
Here is a suggestion for all build videos. When cutting parts at the start flash up a sketch / model in the corner with the current piece being worked on highlighted. It would make it much easier to follow along.
nice table , i plan on makeing a deck on my house an this be a great table to put on it, did i miss where you have the mesurement plans Laney
Great design, I just finished up building it. After sitting on it for a few weeks, I was wondering if you have any thoughts about what it would take to add back rests to the seats. It would make sitting at the table for longer than an hour much more comfortable. I'm not that experienced so I don't know if this design could support backrests. Any thoughts?
Laney, This plan is so cool thanks mate. Do you by any chance have this plan in a metric conversion?
thanks broo i made it happen 100%
Nice to see you back. Now go make a mess :)
Just came across your videos, can you post the measurements. Thanks beautiful job. I am a new subscriber.

como compra essa ferramenta de corta madeira ai como faço pra achar
Hi, is measuring unit given by cm or inches ????? Octagon Picnic Table
How many pieces of wood did you use ?
Looking good...
Question: green clamps, what brand are those? I liked the bright color:)
Vicks VapoRub The color in my video must be off a bit.. The Clamps are actually Yellow and Black. They are JackClamps Made by Lowell Thomas Tools..Great Clamps.. I use them throughout this build.
I cant find the plans for this project, not even in the link provided. Can someone help?
Come back every body mis you kaboooooom
What kind of glue are you using and why?
Just found this and it is exactly what I want to build. Is there a pattern and material list available anywhere?
+Karen Andersen Yes there is..www.asimpledesignofocala.com/Store
I've never seen pressure treated pine with square edges.
Great table. Cannot find the plans
