  • Pruning Black Raspberry bush is important. The most important time to prune is end of winter - early spring.
    By the way - the best time to plant black raspberry plants is late fall.

    That out of the way. Black Raspberry bushes require pruning in early spring. Why spring pruning of black raspberry is so important? The reason is that unlike other berry plants black raspberry produces more berry canes than it can sustain. If we don't prune our raspberry bush, we'll end up with small berries that will be difficult to pick in the messy tangle of fruit branches. If we do prune black raspberry, we'll get an abundant crop of large, juicy berries.
    Black Raspberry absolutely require spring pruning.

      I notice that they are lumped together with red raspberries, although they are quite different in the way they grow.

    Do you fertilize your raspberries?

    • @YouCanToday
      @YouCanToday  Рік тому +2

      Yes we do. We add chicken manure, pot ash, wood chips and compost tea. About once a season in the spring. We are planning to make a video about it.

    Hi, thanks for sharing your experience with black raspberry! I’m looking into running drip tube irrigation for my patch. I see you are as well, what size tubing and emitter spacing do you recommend?

    Great video. Can you pinch off the fruiting offshoots when they are green, during summer?

    • @YouCanToday
      @YouCanToday  Рік тому +2

      Thanks for watching our video. If you tip offshoots, it will trigger them to branch out. I never do that as that will lead to small berries and weak canes. If you leave the long canes till spring, pruning them back after the last frosts you will have a good crop of berries. If you want to propagate the long lateral offshoots are the ones you need to tip layer into the ground.

      @@YouCanToday dam.... too late. I removed the tips as.they were getting too long and in the way.

    • @YouCanToday
      @YouCanToday  Рік тому +1

      @@rockerobertson4002 You can cut them off once they go dormant wherever they start branching out again. Basically tip the lateral tips once they are dormant, that will ensure a good crop next year. Then again, depending on what zone you are in they may not branch out if it's close to when they become dormant.

      @@YouCanTodayOh wow thank you this is the exact information that I needed in my zone 3 here in North Dakota. It is only March but I was wondering how late I can prune them and last year I did not give them a final pruning after the last frost in the spring and they were totally out of control but gave me pounds and pounds of berries 🥰

    Thank you thank you so much. I have beautiful black raspberries but never knew how to care for them everyone else goes into such complicated explanations that I give up trying to decipher even what they mean you showed us as you did it and this was the best black raspberry pruning video I have ever seen and I am 62 years old.
    Thank you from my raspberries they finally will have a season will they will not be on the ground because I was afraid to prune them for lack of a harvest. My black raspberries give me raspberries 3 times a year but I only get to pick two of them in the last one I leave on over the winter for the birds so I was looking for a pruning explanation for the springtime in my zone 3 here in North Dakota. ✌️🕊️🫶🌠🌏🌍🌎🌌💫🫵🌱

    I have wild blackberries all around the perimeter of my yard. Can I prune them the same way with good results?

    • @YouCanToday
      @YouCanToday  Рік тому +1

      Good question! From my experience and the wild black raspberries that I tried pruning, no. The wild varieties don't do well when pruned. Their canes tend to dry out or get infected with funguses when they get pruned.

    Can you prune your offshoots in fall/summer instead of early spring?

    • @YouCanToday
      @YouCanToday  5 місяців тому

      You can. The purpose of the spring prune is to create a shorter fruiting cane that results in larger more juicy berries.

    Shit I told my wife to prune all the blackberry early spring because they were too long and I thought but prunting all of them they would get bushes like raspberries but then now I realized it won’t…. Is there any solution or just wait til new sprout grow out???
