I'm actually really glad that Splinters bad traits were called out. It's always sat wrong with me in most of the renditions of TMNT how Splinter treats his sons. He says he loves his sons equally, which I believe him, but it's kinda hard to fully believe when he puts so much time and energy into Leo and values Leo's opinion and ideas more than the other three. Yes, he's strict on Leo but Leo can can also get away with a lot more as Splinter seems to always be like an ice pick in Raph's ear, lecturing Don and seemingly leaving Micky to his own devices because Micky can't sit still.
Plus, I feel like Splinter has a bit of a bad habit of letting the guys parent themselves or making/letting Leo parent his brothers which is lazy on Splinters part and unfair for the guys

Mikey’s relationship got better with EVERYONE in the later seasons.They don’t hit him much anymore (Donnie even stopping mid slap to see Mikey flinch and proceeded to pat his head instead),they dote on him more,they’re more lenient and understanding.Even Raph.Actually,Raph is the most noticeable.He changed so much he became more like a mom and Leo became more like a dad.
I feel like the relationship between Donnie and Leo is understandable though. Both of them have the most pressure to face on the team. Leo, being the leader, carries the lives of his brothers on his shoulders. He has to strategize, plan, and give orders, and he thinks that if the team fails, it's automatically his fault. As for Donnie, being the smart one, he is responsible for creating the technology that the team uses, as well as disabling the enemy's tech. Not only that, but he is the one who had the pressure put on him to create antidotes and retro-mutagen. So, it makes sense the the "Brainiac duo's" plans might sometimes clash. It's difficult to not break under pressure, and since Leo and Donnie face the most of that, they may often take their frustration out on each other.
I believe the 1987 Leo, 2012 Mikey, 2003 Donnie, and 2018 Rise Raph would get along the best.
That's not an impossible team-up either since it's sort of low-key canon that all of the TMNT shows/movies take place in alternate universes from each-other!

I'm glad that you called out Splinter's favoritism towards Leo! Honestly that is one of the things about the 2012 show that never sat right with me. One of the things that I really like about Rise is that they mastered the family dynamic! The TMNT address splinter as "Dad" instead of "master" or "sensei" and the turtles themselves have a pretty healthy, if extremely chaotic, relationship with each-other, and as the leader, Raph really puts in the effort to help the team work well together (there's this one episode where they're literally glued together, and it was Raph's idea of a team building exercise, still one of the funniest eps imo) Honestly I really gotta hand it to the voice actors for Rise because the dialogue between the TMNT flows so naturally too, it's like the va's got on a zoom call and recorded their lines in real-time.
It is kinda obvious that the reason (we think) Leo is Splinter’s favorite is because he reminds him so much of how he was and Raph kind of would remind him of Shredder with his anger issues which isn’t an excuse to neglect your other kids..
It’s really refreshing to see people actually hold the boys accountable and not just April. They do really creepy things towards April. But on tik tok at least, everyone just bashes April for it

She does however, lead Donnie on a lot, which in another comment section some 2012 April simp refuses to believe proof, which is 90% of the problem we face talking about it. Casey touches the body when flipped, Donnie drools over her, but I don't remember the other 3 doing much towards April at all.

Raph and Slash's relationship is wholesome but hectic
What about Mikey and Renet? They grew to care for one another fondly enough to have a strong bond, they accepted each other's quirks and flaws, and there didn't seem to be any dysfunction between them whatsoever. Their romantic relationship was so cute and wholesome, ultimately it's the healthiest relationship of them all.💖
There is all that, but Renet specifically says out loud “aren’t you a little too old for me? I haven’t even been born yet” because she’s from the future. Mikey would be like 30 and Renet maybe 15? Young adult? in the same timeline or something. Either way to me it’s creepy which is weird cause i used to love them as a ship when i was younger
@@TinyVA It’s a weird situation where, because of time travel, she and Mikey are closer in age and we never see a 30+ year old Mikey grooming a younger Renet.
Couples with a big age difference are really only palatable when they met each other as adults. And because we never see an older Mikey until the apocalypse side story and Renet seems older, it kind of feels like she’s gone back in time to flirt with him so, when they’d first meet, he’s already thinking about getting with her.
It’s really weird and can make you feel icky if you think about it too much.
Wait until you guys find out that apparently the two have gone off and made out. I believe Donnie or Raph bring it up once or twice.

They never officially got together though? They flirted here and there but never been official considering she's not born till way later in the future when mikey more than 20+ years of age so its more of a unofficial first love considering they never dated at all.
Mikey and Leatherhead's relationship is by far my most favorite. How can I not just love those two? They are indeed the best.

Ironically, I’d argue that the two most ‘toxic’ brother-relationships are the closest with the more complimentary personalities (the highest-ranked duo show/imply their closeness with how they’d silently hang out together, bully each other less, and often reference each other first; the second most ‘toxic’ are openly more caring/protective of each other while also teasing/annoying each other most). Basically, one duo doesn’t have big affectionate moments but are often on each other’s side (close in the lowkey way) while the other has the loudest moments of bullying but also looking out for each other first (more expressively close).
I think I understand why Raph is so short with his brothers. With Donnie and Mikey crossing his personal boundaries, getting upset when he does it to them, and Leo taking his role as leader more important than being a good big brother, can't blame the guy.
Raph's relationship with Mikey is like my relationship with my own younger brother.

There's so many examples when they clearly crossed the line and weren't teasing but bullying

Guys multiple times "teased" Raph for his bug phobia and it feels so terrible bc I myself afraid of spiders, so I really know how it is. There was one time when my yonger sister throwed at my keyboard a realistic plastic spider and I paniced to the point of crying. My dad didn't took it seriously bc I was a teen, why I got so scared? But he did made my sister apologize
Next is Donnie and guys laughed at him bc of his crush on April(which I don't like bc she's manipulative yeah) and it clearly hurted him. Also there was a thing that guys tend to make Donnie shut up when he talks about science which is not good too(
And Leo. Guys bullyed him bc... They didn't wanted to train??? What? Honestly, when I watched episode Follow the Leader I couldn't believe the boys will do that to Leo. Sure he isn't perfect leader and the don't like him commanding around but... All of examples just feels like they got too far and it's very uncomfortable. We supposed to laugh at this moments but I felt sad.

But it does make me think. The turtles didn’t see the surface until they were 15. Their only social interactions were each other and Splinter (unless you count the Tengu) and the latter was the golden child of an isolated traditional Japanese family that still went by the title of clan.
Sure, they had some cartoons and comics but that’s not really a good amount of social interaction.
Plus, if we’re talking familial violence, Splinter really doles out the punishments. From holding them by their “noses” to nerve pinches, it gets uncomfortable fast. And it also makes the behaviour make more sense.
It’s like a big echo chamber; it’s okay because it seems normal to everyone and the only people who are outside it either can’t afford to cause rifts with the turtles early on because they’re her only way of getting her dad back (April) or everyone else is just caught up in the fighting.
Say what you will about Rise but it’s clear that the Mad Dogz have been able to at least talk to another person outside of the family, or at least see the outside world, before they were 13. That’s why Mikey can get through to Donnie about his mistreatment of Shelldon; because he compared it to how Splinter acted to Donnie at his worst.
In the teenage mutant ninja turtles tv series, it's very heartbreaking that Karai never had a relationship with her mother. Because of the Shredder killing Karai's mother in the first place. And it's also very sad that Karai never had the chance to grow up with her real father Master Splinter ether. But then again that is also the Shredder's fault to.
On the bright side, she still managed to have a relationship with her brother.

I still can't believe they went with Karai being Splinter's long-lost daughter. Not only was it INCREDIBLY cliche, but as it must've been planned from the start, why even introduce a romance with Leo? Was the guy who came up with this also a fan of Lucas' insane Luke-and-Leia-like-eachother-PSYCHE-they're-actually-twins twist?
The Luke and Leia paring was made before Lucas decided to make them siblings.

Yeah, I'm not sure they would've been good as a couple. Yes, Donnie was possessive of April, but he did try and back off when he thought she wasn't interested. I'm not saying April is completely blameless either; as she never really talked to Donnie about this nor gave him a clear answer, confusing him even more. She had no problem letting Casey know what she thought of him, but wasn't really this honest with Donnie
Yeah.
I mean, being fair, she can pass as fully human and he’s a turtle raised in the sewers. Plus, unlike reality, this NYC is more like a small town environment so things stick out more like a sore thumb.
Meanwhile, Casey is human. She could go out with him on dates, be publicly affectionate and, if they wanted to, get married.
I honestly love Raphael's relationships with his brothers. He shows he cares, not always in the best way, but this is never called into question.
Splinter cares for his sons, however his stubborness can be his greatest weakness too. He was right to be angry with his son's arrogance especially when they barely escaped with there lives from Shredder. As well as there carelessness during Mukman, in spite of pushing them to hard to be ready for Shredder and forbidding them to leave the Lair.
To be fair Splinter was about to leave so he may have already given them a hug before Karai but yeah we could have had Splinter show more love to his other sons
Leatherhead is just a big baby on the the inside..I love him 🤗

I admit, I actually don't like Raph and Mona, JUST BECAUSE, she is a Lieutenant in her people's military..and she always came off as very adult. Raph is still a teenager soo.....to me it always felt off.

I feel like the relationship of Leo and Mikey should be a little lower because like you said Leo is the oldest and Mikey is the youngest and Leo makes his little brother as bait
In part though that’s just good leadership / understanding his team. Mikey being the most naturally talented, and generally fastest turtle, and the one most likely to run than fight if that’s the right play means he’s best used as the bait. Like Splinter said - he doesn’t have to think to act. Know your team’s strengths!

The writers make 2012 Donnie look like a lovestruck simping crusher, and if that wasn't bad enough, April is constantly leading him on when we all know that she's gonna dump the nice guy nerd and go for a juvenile delinquent with anger issues instead, cuz it would just look weird for the writers to have her pick a turtle over a human.
And the show would have Donnie friendzoned and he will probably not even acknowledge it.

You should do something about the 2018 Rise TMNT. They're so very different and much more of a family. Things like how Splinter is a lousy dad, but at least he doesn't pour all his time into turning his sons into soldiers dedicated to battle and in constant competition over their killing skills.
there sure is a lot of clash and love between the brothers. I think this was done to prevent making a cleaque between the brothers, like Donnie and Mikey and Leo and Raph.
I'd say the morals to the show are:
1)Nobody's perfect but always strive to better.
2) Revenge solves nothing.
Also even if Saki successfully killed Yoshi the first time around, what were his plans next? Do you think Shen would want to be with the murderer of her husband?
I was a big Donapril & Leorai fan back in the day. They are cute ships but looking back it’s weird. However when the last season came around I really shipped Karai x Shinigami because they felt so cute, protected & cared for each other.
The only ship I can't entirely agree with is Donnie and April. Yes, they have their moments; but their relationship is usually one-sided and sometimes toxic. April does nothing but play with Donnie's feelings, leads him on, and is very stubborn with him, on and off like one moment she loves him, and the next she hates him. Overall confuses him with her kisses and spending more time with Casey. This caused the rivalry between Casey and Donnie. Also, at some point, Donnie is trying a little too hard to get her attention and has an unhealthy obsession with her. For example, the music boxes were a little creepy. Should they be in the gray? Yes. But they could be the lowest.
that's a lie, she never did that with donnie in cheating on her at all, they never say where they are based other than with the Big foot chapter and already, apart from the fact that it was already resolved in inner power of april
The relationship is incredibly transactional at best and, whilst there is an argument of leading him on, keep in mind that for the first two seasons, her only family was either kidnapped or horrifically mutated; if she messed up with them, that was going to leave her alone.
Plus, Donnie pretty much fell for her because she was the first real life girl.
So, to summarise, if you want healthy Donnie and April interactions, watch Rise.
I’d argue that the way Donnie is is understandable. He’s been isolated all his life without any interactions other than his family, he’s a logical thinker and he’s a 15 year old guy.

Part of me wonders how he'd rate April's relationships to the other 3 turtles.
Leo and April would be healthy. The episode where April was blinded and Leo had his leg injury show that work well together, he surely sees her as a little sister.
Raph and April is grey. They don't interact much so I don't really have a key moment between them except for the episode where she becomes an official Kunoichi and he explains to her that she has a long journey to come.
And with Mikey, it's a healthy going on grey relationship. Same as Raph, I don't have a key bonding moment but he's the one she fight the less with.

April is the only one who worries about Mikey when he gets yelled/scolded(depending on who you ask) by raph. Not to mention Mikey has saved April in season 4 (dunno which episode)

none of that is indicative of a toxic relationship. Every one of the boys messed with the other, and if someone does something bad, it doesn’t mean the person is bad or that their relationship with others arent healthy. They’ve got some of the best brotherly relationships on tv.
No parent will do everything right for their kids. Splinter was going through bodily dysphoria and depression and was a single dad raising 4 children. He did really well all things considered. They all loved their dad, saying even if they weren’t biologically related, he was still their dad. And Splinter was able to keep going cuz of his sons, and accepted the worst and sacrificed everything for them. They also apologized for calling Splinter just “a rat”.
Ralph not being the best leader doesn’t mean his relationships with his friends and family are bad.
The 2018 crew has some of the best relationships in any of the adaptations. It’s partly why I could never get into TMNT until Rise.

@The Movie Basher for clarity purposes I'll explain, there were 3 actors, during the end of S2 the original actor got kicked off for bad messages and tweets online, a temporary actor was there for Leo in the last couple episodes for Leo of S2, so when leo did that whole invasion fight against the footclan, that was a different voice actor, in season 3 his voice became even deeper because it was A 3rd voice actor, known as Seth green
