The Bohemian Artist Myth

  • The Bohemian artist is one of the most romanticized ideals for creativity and inspiration. Bohemian artists are seen as living carefree, unconventional lives, devoted to the idea of pure creativity, void of materialism.
Bohemian life has inspired all kinds of art. From Puccini’s opera, La Boheme, and its Broadway adaptation, Rent, to the movie Moulin Rouge, bohemian life is a celebrated theme.
But the joy and freedom portrayed are a myth.
But there is a problem. No matter how you put it, such a lifestyle is deadly to your creativity and your spiritual life. Join us as we examine this myth, and offer a more robust freedom to take its place.

I know passivity has plagued my art career. This was a good video to watch.

I have to say I have never personally encountered this philosophy.

I do not know what kind of work you do nor why God is holding you back. All I know is, I'm being held back too. I have sent manuscripts to probably a dozen publishers at least. I want my books out there to the point of impatience. I have found it very easy to blame the publishers for refusing me, but the fact is I am a terrible editor. I'm getting better, and I'm getting better at writing too. The way I figure it, I'm being held back because I'm not ready.
Scott Cawthon is a great example of this. He had all sorts of problems trying to make his love of making video games sustainable as a job. He went through times when he didn't do it at all but came back on faith that it's what God wanted him to do. Finally, he decided to make one last game. It blew up massively. He was prosperous, inspired an entire genre, and was able to bless his fans more than once. His story isn't perfect, and people have cast doubts on him. All I know is if we submit to God, He will bless us. Perhaps not always with fame and fortune, but He gives all of us enough.

Don, this can be tricky but there are strategies to help.
our Catalyst Course will address all of this in the fall...so don't miss our summit this fall.
Here are a few questions to help you focus:
What are you doing? what kind of art?
Do you have a website? are you on social media?
      Do you have any mentors?
Do you know who your audience is and where to find them? (age, sex, hobbies, location, and content they consume).

Hey, no1, many great writers were rejected by publishers over and over and over.
And yes, editors are important...if you can afford one, or find a friends who is good at editing, it helps to get fresh eyes on your work.
Naturally, always keep working to get better at your craft.
And yes, submit to God. But that is not passivity as some see it. It is bringing our passions and drives under His direction so he can direct our paths.
Sometimes it is better to think of it as allegiance to God. We are committed to honor him, and work hard at it. This metaphor is more dynamic to me.
...and yes, fame is not guaranteed. We must be shrewd with our talents and our careers. Do it as a steward of your gifts, not in order to get fame or fortune.
      Thanks for commenting!

@@no1ofconsequence936 That was a great story to read, no1! Will have to look up Scott Cawthon. And will pray for you about your writing. It can be frustrating the waiting game and all that. GBY

The idea of doing the work and getting paid and both parties win doesn't always pan out like that. Many Christians see the creative gifts, and talents, as gifts to be given away and often expect to be given them for free. As in they expect artists who do artWORK to give it away to them for free. It's IMO insulting. They don't expect that at the doctor's office or the dentist's office or from the mechanic at the garage. Per the waiting verses just making output it's not so simple for everyone. I have seasons where I'm churning stuff out and then these dry spells where it's just scribbles and bit and pieces and for me to try and force the work under the banner of "must make art!" would ruin the piece or the writing. So sometimes I have to set it aside and come back to it later. I try and combat the drought by keeping the project in view where I can see it, think about it and then prayerfully pick it back up again when I know what steps I want to take next. I wish I could be like some people who are pumping out work constantly but I'm not one of them. Prayed many times to be like it though but I've not gotten that blessing yet.
Thank you very much for this channel. It's a blessing and much needed for the creative members of God's church. I feel seen and heard in a way when watching it. Thank you!

Yes. Not just..., IMO. It is an absolute! That is insulting and denigrating of the arts and the artist. We help people overcome that quickly in our Catalyst program.

Sounds like you have some good ways to pivot and adapt to keep creating and resting as needed. It is a dance...and not all of us have the same talents or abilities.
