    Nice video! The magic stuff is Menzerna buffing compound. Looks like it still has the original paper wrapping

      Are u sure??! Seems like an Odd thing to put on a violin bow??

    • @plassbakkallen
      @plassbakkallen 3 роки тому +1

      @@celllofredde yeah, seems strange, but I'm dead certain. It is based on a wax like substance, so that's what makes it work I guess

      I thought the exact same thing. Menzerna.

    This video is very helpful. I was able to straighten an old bow using your method with a candle flame. I used beeswax in place of your mystery substance, and that worked perfectly. Many thanks for sharing your skills.

    • @AVDanielViolin
      @AVDanielViolin  7 років тому

      do not use candle, it could burn your bow easily

      The wax looks very much like Menzerna yellow wax #16 for polishing car in its old red wrapping.

    Sometimes the cause of this problem is when you leave the bow in the violin case for a long period of time on the side ways position . Gravity will tend to pull the middle side of the bow down . So for me I always hung my bows if not using it for a period of time to avoid this problem.

    You are such a delight! 💖 I received a bow and violin through mail and my bow is too bent 😥 so I will try to do this or perhaps put weight on the bow (books possibly). They shipped the bow too tight and not loose

    As a bow maker; the kind of bows that throw arrows, I do A LOT of heat shaping of wood and use my electric range to get wood as hot as necessary. Heat is heat so I'll go with flameless heat and a padded jig that can over bend the stick to account for some spring back. I'll experiment with the wax because as a wood bender, as with the "heat is heat", I don't believe you need some "magic wax" to keep the wood from scorching. A mixture of tallow and paraffin should probably work.

    I use a heat gun for this, as I find it seems to have less chance of damaging the varnish than a flame.

    Thank you so much! is there any makeshift we could use aside from the "wax" you apply when heating up the bow?

    Hello ! I am from Romania, and here in Romania the prices for the maintenance of the violin bow do not exceed 25USD and include everything: * Mongolian hair, * replaced hair, * pointed bow, * bow cleaning. Personally I find it overly expensive 100USD to straighten a bow. Even if we are talking about expensive cities of the world. If we are talking about a bow that is worth about 10,000 USD, maybe it is worth the 100 USD because there are certain risks.

    • @AVDanielViolin
      @AVDanielViolin  4 роки тому +2

      10,000 USD bow in Japan is only for middle school students, high school students to university students can be as high as 30,000, for professionals a bow can be as high as over 50,000 usd. Please get used to.

      Hey, don't give away our secret prices from România 😀 we cannot be get used to such overpriced things for intermediates :)) I'm sure Enescu and Caliu and all other masters are the living examples of "skill makes the art".
      But yes, who wants to pay 30k, should pay 30k.

    Wondering if the secret stuff that is rubbed on the bow stick is Bee's Wax? it might help keep the bow from burning.

    If you have a twisted bow without a brand. How do you know if it should be twisted or sound better when you make it straight?

  • @Satchmoeddie
    @Satchmoeddie 8 років тому +1

    I was wondering if you had a pin or side bending jig for bending the bow against. A jeweler's bench pin is also nice for bending against or wedging the tip into to take torsional deformation (twisting) out of a bow. Machine made anything wood, will always be far more subject to future problems, than quality hand carved or hand shaved products. Machines neither see nor feel the wood grain. Machines just cut blindly, and later on the wood will find where it wants to be later on, as it ages & dries out, and expands & dries with changes in temperature and humidity.

    I'm learning by myself, reading a lot of books and internet, already made 3 violins, do you think the new hampshire workshops are a good second step for someone who wants to get into this profession in the future?

    What if the bow is bent high on tip&toe and low on center, so the hair touches the bow center? The screw is already tightened, and no more thread left in. Should I straighten the stick and reassemble the hair?

    • @AVDanielViolin
      @AVDanielViolin  8 років тому

      that is why the bow need to be adjusted from time to time/

    • @sooth15
      @sooth15 8 років тому

      It sounds like your bow might have lost some of its curve. It's normally recommended to always completely loosen it when not in use, but over time, the bow can lose some of its curve. As Daniel says, it can be adjusted by heating it, and adding more curve back into it.
